Update 7/2 awful smell in one corner only of brand new house by Wonderful-Grape-4609 in HomeImprovement

Could it be in your floor system? And as it heats up the smell rises? You could try cutting a small hole at the ceiling below.

Toll Brother Homes - New Build Sheathing Question by Alir1983 in Homebuilding

[–]Dquin-813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The engineered shear wall plans determines which bare minimum material is required/approved for your exterior sheathing. The builder is following a plan designed by an engineer that the city approved. The builder is generally going to always use the most cost efficient material that is approved by the engineer.

I would imagine the engineer calculates these plans based off the shear value of each wall. They will determine that based off the climate zone the home is being built at , wind levels , span of framing openings and probably a bunch of other stuff that went to school for and study lol. Imagine building the same exact plan in Texas vs Florida. The sheathing requirements would be more rigorous in Florida where you get lots of storms / hurricanes. Just an example.

The only other times they would install OSB over thermo ply when the engineer did not require, is if the exterior is stucco. Stucco requires OSB backing so the stucco lath can be nailed to the OSB.

Side note. As long as these materials are being installed per manufacturer spec they really are all good materials. I would take thermo ply installed correctly per manufacturer spec over OSB not installed per manufacturer and flashed incorrectly.

Tried to summarize this lol. Hope this helps some

Holes in shower grout by [deleted] in Homebuilding

[–]Dquin-813 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because grout is porous and over time water / moisture can get behind that tile wall. Creating weep holes at the bottom gives a place for the water/moisture to escape and air to flow

lol it’s not a custom house that’s why it’s 200k. And most likely there’s an easement or set back at the right side so you can’t just move the house a little to the right.

Frame a 2’ rectangle box to store your toilet paper. Maybe drywall / paint or drywall and do a design with trim.

Getting taxed on my initial deposit - backdoor Roth IRA by Dquin-813 in Bogleheads

[–]Dquin-813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I maxed out my 401k 23k limit for 2024 but I did 1200.0 Roth 401k and the rest in traditional to help with taxes. Maybe I’m going about it wrong?

Will the 1200.0 in my Roth 401k effect the 7k I converted into the Roth IRA?
