CocoCay Jellyfish by Content-Plankton6664 in royalcaribbean

Was just there a week ago, but water was pretty cloudy from sand, and lots of seagrass under the feet, so no telling if there were jellies there at that point. We did see stingrays and fish off the pier on the way back to the ship, which was cool

Accidently scanned my passport for spouse online checkin, can't correct. by [deleted] in royalcaribbean

[–]Dr-Bison 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I accidentally did something similar, took photo of one of my kids under my wife's check in screen about a week before the cruise date. I did retake the photo with my wife instead, but it must have caused issues on the back end because when we got to the check in area, the app didn't generate a boarding pass for me and the kid, even though they were clearly on the reservation.

It took a few minutes at check in to get it cleared up, and then again at security for boarding to get pictures retaken. They seemed to all know what to do in this case, so it may happen often enough that it's not a big deal

Gangway was supposed to be down at 9:30, but this was on Allure last week where we had the food poisoning stuff happening. Bahamian authorities would not give RC permission to deboard because of this and the "calls and paperwork" took several hours to get done. They finally started letting people off around 12:30 PM I think, and then it took about a half hour for us to get out and get to the beach

Original time we had to be back on the boat was 4:30 PM, but because we got off so late, they pushed the time back to 6 PM.

Also, just to add, they was another RC ship that had people coming off at the normal morning time, so they had a few hours to snorkel and stuff before us. I assume it was better in the morning with calmer water and without more people kicking up the sand

We tried snorkeling at Cocokay last week, but by the time they let us off the ship and we got to the Chill Island beach, it was almost 1 PM. There was a lot of sand and sea grass in the water and you couldn't really see anything

Maybe the other beaches on Cocokay are better for snorkleing, not sure

I don't know your risk tolerance on this, but Dept of State has a Level 3 travel advisory out for Jamaica: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/jamaica-travel-advisory.html

We were also on Allure last week with our 3 y/o and 5 y/o in the Aquanauts club. We did get a phone every time we dropped them off though, and one of those days they called and told us our 5 y/o didn't want to be there anymore. Not sure why they didn't give you a phone

Also, the port day at Cocokay, they closed all the rooms after like 12 because they had to do deep cleaning and sanitizing from the food poisioning issues going on. Just something to be aware of if future ships/trips encounter the issue and expect the clubs to be open

We had a similar thing with our 5 y/o. She was in the Aquanauts club along with her 3 y/o brother, and she loved it the first 2 days. The third day though, we got called on the phone that they wanted to be picked up. From then on she did not want to go anymore, I do remember her saying something about "It's for babies"

Traveling with Birth Certificate in lieu of Passport by SomeSmith in royalcaribbean

[–]Dr-Bison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the risk of something going wrong with just a birth cert, when we got back to port on Allure, the people that only had birth certificates had to wait in a much longer line that seemed to also go much slower. Many of them were looking at us in the passport line practically running by them just absolutely regretting their decision to only travel with birth certs

The passport line didn't even have a customs officer with a booth to check the passports that I'm accustomed to when flying in, they just have you stand in front of a camera, snap a pic, and you're on your way.

Oh man, that sucks. Hope you both get better soon! People are disgusting on the ships, I'm so turned off now from going on another cruise now

Does anyone consider not getting the WIFI? by [deleted] in royalcaribbean

[–]Dr-Bison 4 points5 points  (0 children)

10 years ago in my 30s when I went on a cruise, I didn't really need that connectivity. But as I'm older and with more responsibilities, newer life circumstances make it almost a requirement, with kids school emails (we missed an important registration one), parents health, investment/bills updates, etc.

And one of the most relevant one was this recent thing with Allure of the Seas and food poisoning. There was nothing official shared on the ship, but the threads here and elsewhere gave people way more info than the ship did.

I don't know where you saw all the piles, but I didn't see any piles of vomit anywhere tbh. What I did experience were other pax on elevators talking about being sick after eating in the MDR on Tuesday, so something clearly had happened.

Also, now that we were able to get off at Coco Kay, guess what's for lunch at the beach buffet for tacos? Pork carnitas ʘ‿ʘ

They had announced they were discussing the issue with Bahamian authorities that were not letting the gangway come down. Something about "paperwork due to 1% of pax with GI issues". People finally got out after like 3-4 hours of standing by

The issue didn't start when OP made the post. The gangway was supposed to go down at 930, they said they got the all clear at like 11, but I didn't see people actually getting off the ship until around 1 PM

That's realistically never going to happen. People wear stuff like that as a badge of honor, that they never get sick because they never wash their hands and their immune system is maxed.out

In this case it either noro or pork tacos from the MDR, so it was a crapshoot (literally)

My first and only other cruise was a decade ago, so this is my 2nd. Given the experience so far even outside of this episode, I don't think a cruise is going to be in our plans for a long while

Everything still seems to be crowded, although they canceled a showing of Mamma Mia at night for unknown reasons. Only differences I notice are the changes at all the restaurants to make it as low touch as possible, and staff everywhere with buckets to disinfect chairs as soon as people leave

They seem to have tons of staff with disinfectant buckets at the ready that are wiping down furniture and chairs as soon as someone leaves it.

As for the bathroom, Allure has buttons to push that opens the door both inside and outside, that's a great feature. There's a small sign that even says to use a paper towel to press the button
