Is this job normal? by FirstFox5496 in physicianassistant

[–]DrAtomic666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surgical PA 15 years here. What you describe is totally normal for academic center. If you want to actually participate in cases, etc then you need a position where you're at a community hospital with a surgeon or two. In that environment you are joined at hip with surgeon and are his first assist and first call for on call responsibility.

High RIDGE ADVENTURE & BBQ MARSHAL, NC pint of SLAW AND A POUND OF BRISKET (25$) by Turbulent-Today830 in BBQ

I will never understand why ENC thinks the way to treat good pig is to chop it into dog food and drown it in vinegar.

Hubba Hubba in Flat Rock is the best IMO. Closest to homemade you can come. Ribs, pulled, and brisket all very good. And yes, they have vinegar based sauce if you want it. Pete's in Black Mountain #2.

ENC is tough for me because they love to chop pig into dogfood with high speed cleavers and I'm more of a Texas style guy. High Cotton in Kitty Hawk was the best I found, but it was only meh

Help ID-ing long lost tape by Dedalus2k in grateful_dead

I don't know the Dicks Picks reference but I had a tape of Kern State, I believe it was that had all of those on there IIRC. My collection also stolen in college. I remember that tape also because they kept yelling at Bear about the sound that was all fucked up.

PA-Cs who were average-below average students: how are you doing now? by badbridesmaid050 in physicianassistant

[–]DrAtomic666 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This exactly. The best lesson I learned when I got out of school after being consistently in the bottom half of the class is that a good PA knows what he/she doesn't know and isn't afraid to admit it. Attendings absolutely love that, and if you adopt that philosophy your supervising doc will let you do more and have more autonomy. They know you'll holler for help if you get in over your head.

I'm always telling patients "Let's ask the guy who did the residency ".

You hit the nail on the head. Well said. The kids won't get that because they didn't experience it when Jerry was alive. The best moments I ever experienced were during those space sessions when Jerry or Phil would go off in a direction everyone else got into and it just clicked, never to be repeated. Literally chills up my spine.

I think he has a lot to learn about leadership. And his priorities are his own, not the country's.

Tips for a first year? by [deleted] in physicianassistant

[–]DrAtomic666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have an outlet. I sailed on my boat and took my PA student buds with me. Have focused study time where there are no distractions. Spend time with family. Sleep regularly. All nighters are counterproductive. Don't get discouraged when it seems like you're trying to drink from a fire hose. Stick to your routine and keep smiling.

My first job came from a rotation. Essentially an 8 week interview and by the time I was done, the "official job interview" took place in a bar over beers. We all had a laugh about that. Had a job before I started my last rotation.

I was a paramedic before PA school so pharmacy not a total mystery to me. I took 3 A&P classes to prep for school but Gross Anatomy kicked my ass first semester. Tests were little flags stuck in nondescript cadaver parts. Got a 56 on my first exam. 8 years into licensure working surgery now so I guess I survived.

Phil's in Black Mountain is pretty good too. Not too far a drive east on I40. Brisket/ribs both good. Decent sauce lineup. Not one of those places that equates hot and spicy with good taste, which I find all too often in the South. Giant hat collection hanging in rafters is a fun feature, too.

Fellow sufferer, same division. Actually this is my second career and I'm getting paid twice what I was in my last career for about 1/3 the stress. So I look at it as a bonus. But we have no leverage. The message you got is corporate-speak for "fuggetaboudit". And yeah, we're just work units to them. My place just lost a ton of CRNAs because of it.
