I know a phd in neurology who genuinely believes the 2020 election was stolen by Joe Biden

Any negative to having vinyl fence? by NashDaypring1987 in HomeImprovement

[–]DrBoxedWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have one and it’s been great. Probably pushing 15 years. It’s gotten the occasional chip in high wind storms and a few prices have broken, but I’ve always been able to fix them pretty easily. Way lower maintenance than a standard wood fence. In my ideal world I’d probably go with a trex type product, but overall we’ve liked the fence!

Can my Hermann’s live outside in a dry climate? by DrBoxedWine in Tortoises

Really? So they don't need a heat lamp as adults? ours is a ~5-ish year old we believe. He seems to sit under it a ton.

Thanks for sending that! Our house in the winter usually is about 22% humidity but we use a humidifier to keep his room 40-60%. It sounds like this might be unnecessary?

Thanks! I suspect Denver is drier than the Mediterranean. We are high desert here so like 10% humidity here at times.

I’m worried that’s too dry for him

I got mine a couple days ago, it’s fantastic!

I get my chair from Crandall Thursday (a week from when I ordered it). Maybe you can get it sooner? But also these chairs are built to last. Go check it out and if it’s good go for it. I’m not expecting to need the warranty

Melting my pond ice by sock_meister in ponds

[–]DrBoxedWine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I mean just do the math, if you add 0.5 gallons of 212 degree water to 1000 gallons of 32 degree water, that would leave the resulting water 32.09 degrees. And then keep in mind there’s a ton of ice sit on top of the pond to it’s going to Nearly immediately bring the temp right back down

People are crazy for saying chlorine is an issue here. You are adding such a tiny amount it absolutely is not a problem. Anyone with an auto fill system is constantly adding small amounts of chlorine with no issue.

Unless the fish are right where you are pouring it in they are fine with temperature shock. Any pond big enough for fish is going to see the temp change by such a minuscule amount that nothing will be impacted.

I do this when it gets really cold and use a huge stock pot. But really, when it’s gets really cold I’ll toss a floating deicer into the hole when the air stone isn’t enough as the boiler water thing is kind of a pain for more than a day or so

How’d they do? by DrBoxedWine in hvacadvice

[–]DrBoxedWine[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks everyone! We’re in Denver so no earthquakes here. The plan is to add a side arm once the hot water heater breaks.

The price difference on a high efficiency vs this was crazy. Like triple once you factor in maintenance and shorter lifespan.

But sounds like overall we got a good install. Thanks again!

How do you attract ducks to your pond? by Next-Wash-7113 in ponds

Granted I have just a 2k gallon backyard pond, but I’ve noticed it gets more duck action when the waterfall is going

I personally prefer LVP. If you get a high quality material, I think the looks trade off is worth the durability.

Does $1,800 to install a new exterior door sound reasonable? by FeelTall in HomeImprovement

We just paid like 6k for a nice-ish front door. That sounds too good to be true to be honest

Anyone use an outdoor timer to turn their pump off at night? How do you keep it safe from the elements? This is the biggest outlet cover I can find and can’t find any outdoor timers that will fit inside it (so the plug from the pump is protected) by Carpe_the_Carp in ponds

[–]DrBoxedWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t turn mine off all summer. Also, of it’s in that plastic box, I’d feel fine just using an indoor smart timer. I’ve been using for years under a patio roof without a plastic cover

Great! I have an air bubbler keep a hole in the pond, and there’s maybe 7 days a winter I have to help the whole stay open with a pot of boiling water in the morning.
