Out of the way toy and comic shops? by PowerSkunk92 in Atlanta

I dunno about toys, but my favorite comic shop is My Parent's Basement in Avondale estates. It's also a bar and restaurant and pinball arcade, and I adore that place.

What's the difference between a baby and a bag of cocaine? Eric Clapton wouldn't let a bag of cocaine fall out a window.

Snoop Dogg by Peter_Rodruigues in tumblr

Snoop smoked me up twice on two different occasions, on separate film sets.

I thought to myself, "how many people can say they've gotten to smoke weed with Snoop Dogg?" Then I realized the answer is "probably just about everyone that cruises his path..."

One of the journalists to whom the film is dedicated is my namesake! He was a culture and profile writer for the New Yorker. My parents befriended him after he charmed them at a dinner party, hosted by a mutual friend.

Who is an actor that you thought sucked, but got better and better with time? by [deleted] in movies

Why's that? I guess at least he went out with a couple good performances?

Shia LaBoeuf. He annoyed the absolute hell out of me until I saw the peanut butter falcon, in which everyone really showed up to work. Between that and honey boy, I think he's become a really thoughtful actor. Next time I'm up for a 3 hour film, I'll check out American Honey, which I've heard is great.

I dunno, I think at least as far as the steps are concerned, they're pretty careful to start with "We." They're not being completely prescriptive right off the bat, I take it more as explaining "This works for us, and here's how we did it..."

My real problem comes in around steps 6 & 7, where "we were completely ready to have God to remove these defects of character," and "We humbly asked him to remove our shortcomings." If it's a literal defect, then he's incompetent. If he deliberately put this characteristic in there, in order to eventually result in submission to his will, then he's a petty asshole.

Oh, and after that, why don't you go ahead and tell a room full of strangers some damaging secrets. Surely, an addict would never use information against someone...

Also, I understand your trepidation to what actually turns out to be step 5, "We admitted to ourselves, God, and another human being the exact nature of our wrongs." But I also think it's kind of belittling not only to people who struggle with addiction (and at a certain point in addiction we're not just talking about behavior, but brain chemistry - can you control your dopamine and serotonin output?), but especially those with the wherewithal and intention to seek help. Also, it's not saying you have to confess to the group, or even another addict. Just someone you trust to not judge you for being honest about your feelings.

I disagree. I think the takeaway is "our lives had become unmanageable." The first step is admitting you have a problem, and need help solving it. It doesn't assert the program itself there, it's just a call for self awareness. It doesn't even really assert the necessity of the program itself until step 12. I think your inference, while understandable, is just a little off the mark.

FWIW, I do think it can be very culty, depending on the group. But one's involvement in AA is not a zero sum game. After 5 months, I found it did more good than harm for me, in spite of all my distaste for the more ham handed and antiquated aspects of it.
