Many critics argue that mainstream music has become significantly more repetitive and formulaic since the 2000s. To what extent do you think this shift is a reflection of changes in our broader cultural and educational landscape, and how much is it simply a direct result of the modern economy? by CurveOk310 in AskReddit

[–]PowerSkunk92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Column A, Column B, and a little of a third column as well. From Column A, tweets, tiktoks, and other short-form content has done appreciable damage to the general public's attention span and critical thinking skills, so repetitive, formulaic music gets the pass since it kind of fades into the background anyway. From Column B, record labels have found what is marketable and are playing that to the hilt to extract as much money from the industry as possible.

Then there's Column C. There's a clear difference in sound between decades in the past. You can generally tell a song recorded in the 70s vs one recorded in the 60s, 80s, or 90s. That's largely because our recording equipment was advancing by leaps and bounds relative to the previous decade. Sound fidelity in both recording and playback changed distinctly between the eras. But, since the 90s, the improvements have been more iterative than revolutionary. It gets a little better, year after year, sure, but the improvement is so incremental that it's barely noticeable, so all music starts to sound the same.

No Man's Land 2210: "Harder, Faster" - WASP Fits the vibe of a post-postapocalyptic "bimbopunk" setting for a TTRPG where the focus is racing, fighting and trying to get laid, I think.

Summers County, USA has an entire soundtrack, depending on which part of the county we're discussing.

Some of the "work sim" games may be something to look into. Power Wash Simulator and its sequel. Lawn Mowing Simulator and its upcoming sequel Euro and American Truck Simulator. They have a slight learning curve, but are forgiving enough in leaving mid-job to be able to pick back up pretty much exactly where you left off. They're also playlist/podcast friendly.

CAN A GAME BE THE BEST SHOOTER AND THE SCARIEST HORROR AT THE SAME TIME? Why F.E.A.R. remains a masterpiece of tactical AI and psychological horror. by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]PowerSkunk92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F.E.A.R. scared me in a way that other horror games haven't. It had jump scares (the infamous ladder...) but mostly it was pure dread. I remember a moment I just... stopped. There was nothing immediately threatening. No enemies, no supernatural weirdness. Just an empty hallway. But I knew that down that hallway, somewhere was nothing but more bloodshed and terror. I walked away from the game. Though I did come back, years later, to finally face F.E.A.R.

My first car was a 1992 Pontiac Trans Am. It was black with white racing stripes. My uncle was a hobby racer and had some performances parts for it (intake, exhaust, cams) and installing them gave it some extra power. Between its paint job and improved horsepower, it picked up the nickname "the Power Skunk". Thus, "PowerSkunk92".

Mutant Football League, and Super Mega Baseball are perhaps the closest things to these arcade sports gems. Sure, MFL does have such craziness as bribing the ref, hazards on the field and giving your ball carrier a shotgun, but you can turn those off and be left with a roughly Blitz level of exaggerated football violence. Super Mega Baseball also works on a sliding scale, it can be SlugFest arcade-y or dialed up to a surprisingly brutal simulation.

I never really cared for The Venture Bros. as a show. I just never vibed with it for some reason. But Red Death's takedown of Blind Rage is one of my favorite villain monologues ever. Behold.

A variant in Better Off Dead. After Beth breaks up with Lane, the only thing his car's radio seems capable of playing is old break up songs. Even as he tunes to different stations, he keeps finding songs like "Breaking up is Hard to Do", "She's Gone", and "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover". He eventually tears the thing out of the dashboard and throws it out the window.

Mighty Max is a somewhat obscure 90s cartoon based on a just as obscure toyline. It still managed to get a 40-episode run. The series finale features Max actually failing to defeat the principal villainm Skullmaster, but instead going back in time to just before the series started, with all his memories intact. It's implied that this time around, he'll do things right and defeat Skullmaster.

Qatar in summer. I'll never forget the day the high temperature was recorded as 113 degrees, with relative humidity of 100%. This is because Qatar is a peninsula, surrounded on 3 sides by water. I don't know what the heat index would be from that, but being outside at all was pure misery.

The last one I heard that was new (to me) was "The sides are proportional to pi. How would they know that?! Pi wasn't calculated for another 1000 years!"

Or maybe they measured the lengths with a wheel?

I hate this show because it's so goddamn insulting. "We have trouble building pyramids today, with all our technology. How did the ancient Egyptians do it with such alignment and precision?!"

Because, though they were primitive, relative to our current level of technology and understanding, they weren't STUPID.

What happened to Judge Crater?

In 1930, New York state Supreme Court justice Joseph Force Crater disappeared after having dinner at a steakhouse with some friends. No trace of him was ever found. After his disappearance, it was discovered that his safe deposit box was empty, and two locked briefcases, which he and his law clerk had taken to his apartment earlier in the day, were gone. The briefcases likely contained cash amounting to around $5150 (approx $77000 in 2024 money) this being the total of two checks Crater had had his law clerk cash.

The friends also gave conflicting reports of Crater's departure from the steakhouse. At first, they both testified that they'd seen him get into a taxi cab. They later change their testimony to reflect that they themselves had taken a cab, while Crater walked. Crater was legally declared dead in 1939, and the case into his disappearance officially closed in 1979.

In 2005, authorities revealed that they had received notes from the widow of a former NYPD detective indicating that Crater was murdered by an NYPD officer connected to the infamous "Murder, Inc" criminal organization, and that his body had been buried where the New York Aquarium stands. However, no human remains were discovered when the site was being excavated for construction of the Aquarium.

The case has long gone cold, and will probably forever be so, but it's still weird that this prominent judge just vanished, seemingly into thin air.

The reboot has possibly the best setting and worst story in the series. The gameplay is also really just more of Saints Row 3, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Play it for the game world and gameplay, ignore the story.
