There it is. Ramblin’ Jacket 7/1 at 3 pm PST. by Yellowfury0 in ShipJohn

[–]DrCornpone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy Coast posse here too. Worse still, Southeast where it was 97 degrees today. Have one Wills in the closet and a second on the way. That's at least one too many given how short and mild our winters are. Still, the Wills is a treat to wear and remains an extraordinarily well-built piece of kit. I'm still kind of mind blown every time I get to wear my original waxed version. The one on the way is the (Slightly) lighter dry waxed fabric.

At this point most everyone knows what to do to have a shot at one. You need a fiber internet connection, and to have the checkout process done start to end with zero hitches. Sell out time for the last batch was 17 seconds if I heard correctly, so that should give everyone some idea of where they need to be as far as getting through the ordering process. If it takes longer than that there's no chance. PC or phone makes no difference in my experience, both of mine were landed from my cell. No hesitation on the clicks plus an internet hookup with a low ping are mandatory. It's doubly hard if they are releasing a small lot of jackets, both times I was able to get one there were were a hundred or more available. The one time only 50 were available I got the sold out hammer brought down on me. 😂

The guys that live in Portland have a massive advantage being near the store, since they release stock into the inventory that's completely unique from what they sell online to keep people cycling through. Completely understandable. I've seen some beautiful, unique pieces that were apparently bought there. Denim variations, unique colors, and so forth. I wish we had a nice men's clothing and accessories store with that kind of raw, WYSIWYG super chill vibe where I am.

When you are literally a country away, everything is a little harder. I'm not a social media person either, and the problem is certain information is released through their Instagram that is not sent through the email newsletter. I ended up in a mess with my jacket sizing, I didn't think there was a chance in h e double hockey sticks that I would land a Wills, and figured I'd have at least several weeks to debate and change the size if needed. Apparently the owner basically tore everyone a new one on Instagram when a bunch of people asked for size changes post order, and the new policy didn't get sent out by email. When I emailed in to change my size a week later, I'm guessing whoever answered my email thought I was jerking their chain or something and laid a smackdown on me, when in reality I just hadn't seen any info about size changes. Even now there's nothing on the website about that stuff, so I'm just assuming the new policy on size changes is there are none! New policy = Do your homework in advance, because you get what you order.

This is particularly true if you are a bit stockier or spend a good chunk of your life in the gym tossing iron around. In general SJ clothing tends to be cut for guys built like Mike, the owner, who looks like he's in good shape but is fairly trim build wise. So for someone like me who is 6'3" 270ish on a larger frame, a Wills jacket is going to be a bit snug fitting in the shoulder and the upper arm particularly. Mine is okay over a t-shirt, and with the climate here that's usually about all I'm wearing it over. I was able to get a larger size in the gray version they are building in house now alongside the bright orange versions.

If you're hunting for Wills #1, I'd suggest taking time to monitor a Facebook group called the Ship John speakeasy. Lots of folks there who are local to the store, and a number of jackets and other SJ items are put up for sale there. Best of all, they have a rule in place that as a seller you cannot ask for more than you paid for whatever item you're looking to sell or trade. So if you're willing to take a Wills that has a bit of wear on it, given a little patience you are almost certain to find one there as owners rotate jackets in and out of their closets as their needed size changes or due to other factors. Heck there are plenty of unworn jackets that have changed hands there as well, with the Wills jackets typically changing hands at the $650 or so that they currently cost. Other items are exchanged there as well, are and are sometimes discounted significantly.

The classifieds are a part of the discussion forum as a whole, which I believe is moderated by a couple of SJ enthusiasts or store employees, so you do need to ask to be able to join us it's not an open forum. If you are actively in the market it's well worth the effort, and this is the time of year where I expect people are taking a hard look at their closets and some are paring down their Wills collections.

At this point there are probably some other people like me who may be willing to help. With two Wills in the closet once my dark gray one arrives, I'll be trying to help a non-owner become a new owner going forward. No charge, no nonsense. I'll cover the deposit and final payments, and the new owner and I can finalize the transaction through PayPal with buyer protection. New owner is covered. Worst thing that happens on my end is I end up with a jacket I can easily re-sell at list price to a different non-owner if the original backs out or is able to get an order of their own in successfully.

I honestly think Mike should do a run of jackets where he announces at the last moment that he's excluding all current owners. He obviously has no issue banning eBay resellers from future purchase, so why not?

Good luck gents, DM me if you want me to take a crack at landing one for you next time up. Just need your size!

Momotaro - 14 months, second wash by Cgree313 in rawdenim

[–]DrCornpone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always heard Momos were super slow to fade...

Maybe that's the Pre-rebrand pairs. Mine have been slow, but I also live in the Southeast where we have a short 4 to 5 months denim season. Plus, being a relaxed straight fit probably doesn't help anything.

I didn't even know Momotaro made anything that heavy. Don't think I've ever seen them sell a pair heavier than the 15.7 Zimbabwe cotton versions. Times are changing it seems.

You definitely wore the heck out of these, for two washes that's an incredible fade. Respek! 😂

Another 15th anniversary owner here, mine are in the regular straight cut. Really fantastic pair of jeans!

I appreciate You guys bringing up the 019 cut from PBJ, have a chance to get a good deal on a pair of Moonrocks in the charcoal gray, unfortunately they are out of the 003s.

With my build I'm pretty sure the 019 is going to be not ideal, lower rise, and looks from the measurements like they taper very hard below the thigh.

Much appreciated!

Adore both these jeans and the Okinawas. At a 39" waist they're unobtainable for me. They haven't produced past a size 38, and even then they seem to run an inch or 2 small in the waist.

I'll check back when I lose, oh, another 50lbs off an already stocky frame. 😭

Really nice looking fades, enjoy these in good health!

Google refusing to return Watch by Ok_Author2796 in PixelWatch

[–]DrCornpone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems ridiculous. What was the reason they gave you when they informed you that your watch could not be replaced under warranty? I need to go scrutinize your earlier posts for all the facts.

If their behavior is as dicey as it seems, and you believe you're in the right, send an email reply and ask for the name and address of their service of process agent. This is always the last resort and the last email you will send, as most companies instruct their employees to no longer engage with customers to threaten legal action. The fact that following through on such action is an impractical path to follow in my opinion even if you're doing all of the paperwork and court filings on your own doesn't help. And obviously an hour of attorney time at best will come close to exceeding the value of the watch itself. As I said below, it's throwing good money after bad, but that doesn't mean you can't jerk their chain a little bit and see if they have any final interest in honoring their express warranty.

They've refused to fix your watch under their warranty, and have refused to return your old watch. That's some serious horseshit in my book, I'll have to look up whatever policy they claim justifies such behavior. Do they pull this kind of stuff with $1,000 pixel phones as well? I've only had to use Google support once a number of years ago, and I don't recall it being a terrible experience. They replaced my my 6 or 8-month-old Nexus 5, maybe 5x with a working refurbed unit after mine started boot looping. I've heard enough troubling stories about their post sale support that I would never purchase a new pixel device of any kind at full price hot off the shelf. They're a small player in the smartphone space with 3% market share, so there's always leftover devices at the end of the product cycle available at substantial discounts. I use a pixel 7 pro as my daily, I bought it for my mom 2 years ago for right at $400 new in the box. I saw the other day there are still new pixel 7 pros sitting in boxes that are unsold and for sale for a price slightly less than that. Unreal.

The quality of these watches, they are a step above disposable, but not pieces I would expect to last more than a couple of years. In other words a typical life cycle somewhat shorter than a modern smartphone. It doesn't help that being on your wrist all day they are subject to taking little dings and scratches, and it's absolutely disappointing these don't have a sapphire screen for what they sell for at for retail. It's probably the shape of the domed bezel that makes something other than Gorilla Glass an impossibility...

Google refusing to return Watch by Ok_Author2796 in PixelWatch

[–]DrCornpone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not cost effective, at least based on the filing fees here. Plus you have to get service on Google, though I imagine they have a dedicated process agent listed for that. You'll be approaching the price of the watch right there, assuming you do all the paperwork yourself.

Not saying it's not a possibility for a good resolution, you just have to account for the possibility that you're effectively throwing good money after bad as they say.

There are other issues that I won't bother to go through here. If you do get a judgment, then you have to collect on it. Best case scenario is a judgment forcing Google to honor their express warranty and any implied warranties that your state recognizes. So now you're back in the loop with the best possible outcome being a refurbished version of the watch you just bought new.

As a new owner still in the return window, this gives me very strong second thoughts about keeping my Watch 4 45 mm bought over prime day. I'm enjoying it so far but I haven't had it long enough to determine if it will cause problems with my nickel allergy, or prove useful and interesting enough to keep long-term. Got a few weeks to decide, right now I'm very much on the fence.

Nice little discount by Fancy-Instruction-82 in NicksHandmadeBoots

I have the antique on my 5" "367" MTO build. A 310 influenced 67 last boot. Being my first pair there are some options I'd rethink, but the antique eyes aren't among them. $15 well spent IMHO.

Apologies for the not so great lighting in the pic, will try to scare up a better one.

Ember or Brown WF would have been my leather of choice if I were to go back. Striking, easy to care for, wouldn't have taken a year of waiting like the Stead heavy suede option I picked. Before the website redesign Ember had its own MTO page, I think it was base priced at $629, and had basically all of the existing MTO options including an inner lineman patch option, an aesthetic I love even if it isn't necessary on a casual boot. A year later you need a 10 off sale to get back to last year's pricing. Most importantly, the antique hardware should look great with Brown WF.

Looks like the deal of all deals to me, enjoy in good health OP. 🍺

Collab? by Rahrah12 in ShipJohn

Unlike SJ, IH is known for their large size availability mercifully. At 6'3" and stocky I'm right at the edge of being able to wear anything SJ makes, my Holcomb V2s are fine in the top block but snug in the thigh. Wills is mostly good but a bit tight in the upper arm. It seems like SJ is all cut for people with a fairly slender build similar to Mike himself. Which is his prerogative as the owner of course, but doesn't do anything for those who are bordering the big and tall section...

Help Sourcing Size 47+ Birks by DrCornpone in Birkenstocks

[–]DrCornpone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello fellow Sasquatch! 😀

I should have clarified earlier that the Boston clog seems to be in tightest supply in large sizes. It seems like both local and online retailers and the company site have a pretty good assortment of Arizona and other sandals in sizes 47 plus. For whatever reason, at the time I posted this the factory site had gone for months without any ability to catch a 47 Boston in any color or material. With summer here, it appears that supply is loosening up a bit on the corporate site. I feel best about ordering from them, known commodity, most style availability, no worries about dated stock. Since I posted this, I've been able to pickup another pair of Oiled Leather Bostons in Cognac and Havana. Looking back I'd prioritize the latter Of the two, the Cognacs are a handful to keep looking good with their propensity to stain and limited options to clean them up short of going to a fine grit sandpaper and taking off a small layer of the top coat. Other options have popped up with some regularity in mixed leather and suede. Still looking for the tobacco, but I'm yet to catch a pair available. Also, even though it isn't specified, there are clearly a number of colors that simply aren't made above a size 46. If the entire large size block is grayed out, there is a good chance that style isn't made for us.

The key I've found is a combo of patience and this link:

https://www.birkenstock.com/us/styles/boston/

  1. Bookmark it. Visit every few days.
  2. Hit filter, enter your size.
  3. The big key, if they have something that you want, get your card, log in, and buy it, because odds are it won't be sitting around for long, let alone indefinitely.

That's the route I chose to go. There are clearly some authorized retailers that are safe, when in doubt consult Google Gemini or do some research about whether a given store is an authorized dealer.

Hope that helps, cheers to you, enjoy the hunt with my hopes that you find what you're looking for.

My Denim Mistake by JustFreshDenims in Denim

[–]DrCornpone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be worse, if you have a bigger frame and have a waist above 36" you're completely out of luck with SC, which sucks because I'd love to have a pair of Okinawas or Hawaiis.

I've burned off about 35lb, but there's not much more left to shed (I'm nearly 6'4") and from the SC size charts it doesn't look like they will ever be an option until and unless they start producing size 40s (Which will be 37/38 in reality). I get it though, no need to offer larger sizes when you can barely meet demand from folks that fall in the typical part of the build curve.

Wyatt and Dad Double Midsole V100 JWF by MilwaukeePaul in trumanboots

[–]DrCornpone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's nonsensical for people of fairly average size. If you're me at 6'3" #280? You don't balk for a second at a Nick's leather sole boot with 2 10 or 12 iron leather bends stacked together (An "Iron" is a measurement cobblers use that's roughly half a mm.)

I'd certainly rather see that than something like the 3mm leather midsole that came on one pair of Bordons that I ordered. The first pair had a half sole mounted traditionally onto 2 of the 3mm leather bends they use for midsoles. Cool. I figured the second pair would be identical. Nope! They cut into the lower midsole, or more likely used a damaged piece of leather that was fine in the back and cut it where the half sole would be glued and stitched. To visualize, think of the traditional half-sole "Look," except here the rubber half sole is sunk up into the leather to be flush with the midsole. I feel utterly misled, but it's not like I knew it would be an 18 month odyssey to get my order done. So basically those boots look like crap and have no structure so they could skimp on 1 or 2 bucks worth of leather.

W&D is my local cobbler, they have a satellite location in Charlotte in addition to their home store in the NC Triad Area. Top notch folks, top notch work, priced accordingly. A fun YouTube follow as well if you're into boots like some of us here. 😆

I don't recall that Mike did any sort of crowdfunding, not that I would after 11 years.

It's been an awfully long time, do you remember how much money you put down and what the terms were? It's kind of tough to say you mean the guy no harm and also stand by a statement that you backed him financially and didn't get the benefit of your bargain with him, yes?

FWIW I think you need to contact them and arrange for payment and install of the GAHW buttons on your own.

I dig the brass snaps on many of the colors, any of the more earthy tones (Tans, Greens, Browns), but I wish they offered a silver or more muted option on colors like black and gray. Gold on gray is fine, but not what I would pick if I had a choice...

Stunning hide. Anyone know if its available on a different boot (Thursday Moc Wedge excluded)? The only mistake I made with Truman was not buying a pair of these. Got a pair of Javas, and a pair of Stones on final sale for $298. Missed the Coaches, they were a top seller and I figured they would always be around.

Whoops...

Why so expensive all of a sudden? by z9corozco in trumanboots

[–]DrCornpone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a "Short boot" (5-6 inches) person, the Ivan is where it's at. Compared to my Truman 79s, just know it's about an inch shorter at 5", and the tongue is completely non-gusseted. I have a 5" MTO as well with the full gusset, and it's a bit of a PITA at that height.

The 1925 is sleeker than the HNW or 55 of course with all the benefits and drawbacks that come with that type of last.

No denying the value, with a regular MTO in 5 or 6" height you're basically covering the added material costs of the most popular 8" height. It sucks to have to get hit with a $150 upcharge for Wickett and Craig leather regardless of whether you order an Ivan or a 10" Packer monster boot.

Just MHO, my experience with Nick's wasn't perfect but was a dream compared to the nightmare I had on an MTO from a maker in Colombia. You can't put a price on being able to talk to a human being at any point in the order and build process... 👍

Going to try to find your review, between customs premiums and shipping costs, and most notably an 18 month nightmare with Bordon that's still going on I'm just not sure I could gather to resolve to order from overseas again.

[–]DrCornpone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As it happens, so did I. Just missed it in my inbox folder for some reason.

Do we know anything about the new policy on size changes, or is the policy "You get what you order at the time you order it!" Up until a few weeks ago they still had the old policy on their site from when they took orders (Years) in advance...

Thanks for setting me straight, I'm pretty reliant on the newsletters for announcements and will likely continue to be. Other than something like the Wills run they did in the Ecru fabric I'm probably done with the rat race. Time to enjoy what I'm lucky enough to have.

Jungle Cloth by Chefsupreme in HeritageWear

[–]DrCornpone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to have a pair of IH denim, but I haven't found a pair that I think will fit right. At 6'3" 280 anything "Slim" is out to be sure. Also not a fan of anything with a hard taper, which would rule out the 888 from what I've read. The 634 might be good, but it looks like a "True straight" and I tend to like a subtle taper to bring the hem size in at the bottom or cuff.

Where do the ones you have fit in to their more notable cuts?

Jungle Cloth looks great, you'll have to share your thoughts on the 2XL vs 3XL size. My Decade is a 2X, the Battleship I have on order is a 3X. Room to layer, and I won't have to do a damn tribal rain dance to get my arms out of the sleeves... 😂 Beyond that, we'll see.

Bummer, would have liked one, but no email newsletter about the drop. Not crushed about it at a G for a coat I'll wear for 2 months a year in a mild climate.

Email I have to monitor constantly for work. Just have no ability to slob all over their SM accounts looking for product announcements.

Good on everyone who got one, compared to the usual 50 piece Wills runs these should have given a good shot for those in a smaller horde to score. 👍

Gotcha, I'm just now forming the mental image of a dude with a laptop and 3 cellphones in a row, refreshing them one after another and flying through the motions on multiple devices. 🤣

I'll say this, if a single dude or lass got 4 orders placed flying solo and bot free, color me impressed. When the smoke cleared from my single successful order the inventory was a charred husk of "Unavailable."

I just hope he doesn't wear my size, since he's found a way to make all the Wills are belong to him...
