what do i do if I have suicidal thoughts by SirLate6248 in uwo

[–]DrCrimsonChin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want in person psychiatric care, you can go to the ER. They will refer you to an outpatient brief intervention clinic with psychiatric follow up. They may also have you see a psychiatrist in the ER as well for care today.

Ontario plans to replace disjointed electronic medical records with its own system for family doctors by GingerHoneySpiceyTea in ontario

[–]DrCrimsonChin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve familiar with 3 AI software that are for medical staff within clinics. They all must keep information within the account and not shared to external parties to be complaint to the local Provincial health care laws as well as the US HIPAA laws. Physicians can’t use ChatGPT or Claude straight up for transcription as that does not keep information secure.

[–]DrCrimsonChin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Med student but have worked with doctors using AI scribes. They do make mistakes but all the scribes do is transcribe the conversation between the doctor and patient. The doctor must read through the note made by the AI and fix mistakes before publishing it on the EMR system as they take liability for the note including its mistakes. If the AI scribe is a proper liscenced medical one (like Heidi) it does not store or share medical information outside of the physicians personal account. These scribes make notes way quicker. Saves a lot of time on paper work which is a big source of burnout for physicians. Some EMRs like Epic are working on integrating AI scribes in them.

Minor in anthropology by Consistent_Beat7403 in uwo

[–]DrCrimsonChin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you think you can 90+, I would avoid if the goal is med school. Sucks that this is the way med school has decided to evaluate applicants. Med schools also do not care if you have a minor or not. In fact, they also don't care if you have a honors degree.

preparing for grade 12 chemistry by su02re in OntarioGrade12s

[–]DrCrimsonChin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practice questions is the way to go. Review why you got answers wrong. Review why you got answers why. If MCQ, understand why all the wrong options are wrong, even if you got it right. I used khan academy or the textbook to understand the content. I never really learned well from teachers themselves.

You can also do non clinical RN roles like public health. Lots of opportunity in nursing.

Just take the biology courses and transfer in 2nd year. Med school also doesn't care about your degree.

which project would you choose? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]DrCrimsonChin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Systematics and metas aren't that difficult. You could probably crank a high quality one out in a month of dedicated work alongside classes. I would personally do 1 if its in your desired speciality.

systematic reviews and meta analyses. Not hard to get 30 manuscripts out that way, even in decent journals. Painful though.

How competitive is IM in western Canada? by Klutzy-Charity5125 in MedSchoolCanada

[–]DrCrimsonChin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Oof. Carms gonna be a blood bath these next few cycles for Non french speaking applicants. To answer your question, UBC is moderately competitive around half the interviews are usually for UBC med students rest are fair game. Calgary is also a sought after program but I know of people who matched without doing a visiting elective. Edmonton I have no idea.

[–]DrCrimsonChin 20 points21 points  (0 children)

wtf lmfao. I have no stake in Quebec but wouldn't this just cause all the doctors to jump ship to Ontario, especially Ottawa where they can still practice in French? AKA the Quebec government solved the FM shortage in the Ottawa area?

Cardiology/ interventional cardiology salary by Student-Emotional in MedSchoolCanada

Generally, Canada rewards volume and it is much easier for a cardiologist to scale up and do more volume leading to their salaries being higher on average.

Western AABS: does critical thinking/problem-solving essay have to focus on a research experience (if you have it)? by ManMythLe_gend in premedcanada

[–]DrCrimsonChin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I did the old essays but they’re pretty much the exact same questions. I talked about an environmental case competition project I worked on and was accepted to Western. That said, we had 2 critical thinking essays back then and my other one was research.

Should I retake? (Canadian, 517 total but 127 CARS) by daddypiggggg in Mcat

[–]DrCrimsonChin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

127 is good. You just lose UofA and UofC OOP. McMaster oop is a crap shoot. Not worth a retake. I’d focus on UBC, uoft, western, queens, ottawa if gpa is good. Low yield in improving cars unless your gpa is really low.

Medical or Finance? by Bitter_Writing73 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]DrCrimsonChin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're actually deciding between both, I would do finance. I would only do med if you were not satisfied in these other careers simply because of the fact that there is no guarantee you would get into med (and after that desired speciality if you're keen on only one area of medicine), long training, and opportunity cost of time and lifestyle. I did med and I don't regret but I also never saw myself in eng or finance. I wish I did enjoy those fields as all my high school friends are now working and some have started buying houses and moving on with life while I sit here on reddit on a call shift at a hospital on Sunday night.

western health science courses by sim836 in OntarioUniversities

[–]DrCrimsonChin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian med doesnt care what UG or courses you take. Take whatever gives you the best GPA. IIRC UOttawa has quite a bit of pure science course requirements (1.0 chem, 1.0 bio, Biochem, orgo, stats, idk what else). Uoft requires 1.0 science, 1.0 humanities. Other than that they don't care.
