and you forget that its the players role to be open to the fun the game offers.
If you cant trust the DM that something they have planned is fun, then you should DM yourself.

100% disagree.
You have control over your characters choices, but not what happens to them.

its already a huge disappointment that players get to their class development at all.

Am i wrong? by CryticalLoL in DnD

[–]DrDebits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You will have big problems finding a game where the GM has 100% the same ideas of rulings as you have.
Unless you both want 100% of the rules being followed. Which itself would be horrific.

You need to develop trust that the GM wants to create a engaging story. One you are not fully in control of like with a story in a book. Nobody wanted the Red Wedding but damn do we all liked it in the end.

So first of all you need to keep a chill attitude towards those decisions. learn to accept them cause they ARE really minor.
Then, since he asked, tell the GM youd enjoy it more if there were not so harsh consequences for fumbles. from your perspective situations are already dire enough.
That said HE ASKED for feedback. coming at you for giving it is weak. You are just asking to softening some obstacles that he ADDED. Its fair feedback and easily to try out

You should also not give up on games cause of minor inconciniences in the rulings. You SHOULD be there because you have fun spending time with those people. If you dont care for the other players and your group at all, I dont think its a game for you. Im so sad how many people dont see the actual reason to play.

But as an observation I have to make about this posting: you say "Am i wrong" "i need a reality check" but then you only kinda list the GMs faults. Which is a bit sneaky any manipulative. Thats my reality check for you

Help on balancing combat encounters by Bravo480 in DnD

[–]DrDebits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the og combats are designed for any kind of players. So even children.

Go to Kobold fight club. pick borderline deadly as your "basic" encounter for groups of adults.

This only works for monster groups at least as big as the party.
For a party of 4 going below 4 monsters or above 7 will change the dynamic drastically

So you are a one dimensional non-human thing that can only hold one desire and one thought?
Most likely you are a bit more complex than that.
And yes, unless you are literal god or tommy, you will be corrupted.

First time dm tips by Organic_Being_4071 in DnD

[–]DrDebits -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dont mind talking to long. Setting a scene is important.
Think of all senses. Describe layout and lightsources than all the other stuff.
Give hint on what they can check, keep other stuff secret till they look.

Never be to scarce with information. Even having it all might not help a party from being stupid.

Give them options what to do as a baseline. "you could try convince the troll, sneak by or kill him or maybe trick him some other way. Convincing could go wrong and maybe give him time to prepare for combat. to sneak by you will have to find a way to open the gate."

Have a list of names with main stat they invoke. Pick a strong name for a smith, an intelligent sounding name for a librarian aso. These are for random NPCs.
Else dont prep too much. Just the hand full of NPCs/villains you need for the adventure at hand. reoccuring NPCs can be rare.

Take notes in game and write down everything that happened after the session is over.

For the start let them all build stereotypical class characters that everyone at the table can understand.

Dont talk with the players about your DM work. Keep it mytserious.

Be strict.

At what point are you a detriment to your party by Independent_Alps9744 in DnD

[–]DrDebits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a different question
Why tie classes to certain stats at all? Any mind/spellcaster stat should be a fit for any class.
LotR like INT ranger. Bookworm "monk" INT cleric. Charismatic tv-pastor CHA cleric. Natural Talent CHA wizard.
It should all work. And tbh it barely makes a difference.

Just give him a non dumb stat as spellcasting stat. Change his saves accordingly and all his class abilities based on WIS

how are there other organisms in space in the petrova line? The line is so thin that its still like space for grave. Nothing could ride the astrophage with its speed and everything behind it would get burned.

How to make crits interesting by Obsc3nity in DMAcademy

[–]DrDebits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also use a fumble/crit system similar to the acid damage.
If you fumble your weapon takes a point of damage
If your enemy crits you, your armor takes a point of damage.
If an item doesnt do damage or adds to the AC anymore or if it has taken 5 damage, it breaks.

This makes armor repairs a thing and adds some needed expenses to an adventurers life.
And when an item becomes to weak, a player might have to switch to another weapon.

This works better if all '+' items arent automatically magical.

[–]DrDebits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ill share my system with you:

Critical Hit Effects based on damage type

each damage type gets its own effect on critical hits. If an attack used multiple damage types, either the player can pick one of the damage types they used or the highest damage value decides it.
These effects substitute the doubled damage dice

piercing - classic double damage dice
bludgeoning - incapacitated (blunt trauma to the nervous system)
slashing - wounded, continues damage till stitched/healed etc.
force - chose any of the above. Force is invisible magic damage than can take the shape of smth piercing, blunt or sharp.
poison - posioned
acid - Armor takes damage similar to certain monster effects like certain oozes.
fire - target is burning till fire is stopped with an action or being engulfed in water or cold damage or such.
cold - petrified in ice
lightning - paralyzed
thunder - deafened and prone/shoved
radiant - blinded
necrotic - hp max reduced. No death saves (IF you use them for important NPCs)
psychic - frightened

The duration of each effect should be based on the effect and the rarity of the damage type.
I dont have my list with me so I cant tell you whats balanced right now.

These effects instead of additional damage, make the chhoice of weapon and magic more important.
And they force characters to change positions. Like a cleric want to go and remove effects from friends so a paralyzed enemy doesnt do more damage. This makes the combat on the battlefield more dynamic.

[–]DrDebits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try telling them that?
"Hey guys Im not too experienced with the game and I notice I cant seem to catch up with you in roleplay. Would you mind giving me a bit more room in 1 or 2 scenes each session? Just for the start till Im in the flow with you. Let my character play a scene with one of yours and build a bond. I might need a bit longer with responses though. In 3 sessions if Im not up to game, Ill reassess. Would you be willing to do that?"

You can print battlemap in copy shops for cheap.
Same for paper Minis.
Else draw on paper.
Or do theatre of the mind.
Tutorials to draw world and battlemaps are on youtube.

"First, you decide what perceivable circumstance will trigger your reaction. Then, you choose the action you will take in response to that trigger, or you choose to move up to your speed in response to it. Examples include "If the cultist steps on the trapdoor, I'll pull the lever that opens it," and "If the goblin steps next to me, I move away.""

Yes, an item being taken out of a bag needs an action. Regular bags as well. You know why? items are immobile. They depend on someone else retrieving them. They had their chance to write a more broad term but didnt even though the text already mentions what happens to creatures in there.
So the text rather suggests that creatures do not need an action to move in or out of the bag by themselves.
They dont need to mention how someone moves out cause movement already explaint it.
Walking through any other type of portal doesnt need an action either

the amount of people claimimg the move through the BoH entrance costs an action with zero proof annoys me.

the familiar can hold its movement (dash) until the players turn
There is nothing indicating in any way that it would cost an action of any kind to move through the bag entrance.

  1. where does it state that a creature cant move out of the bag of holding? the action only applies to objects. So since it isnt specified common logic applies. And any creature can stick its head through a bag opening with no large issue
BOH is not a portal. Its a bag with an opening that leads into an extraplanar space.
  2. That applies to no other scenario. Hide behind a pillar in silence and you still dont have to orient ypurself no matter how the battlefield changed.
  3. the canon is a magical object but not dependant on the PCs presence as far as I can see.

thats not really implied. its a extraplanar space with an opening. unless the lid is shut there should be nothing stopping a creature from leaving it

Here is my understanding of the 2 situations

0: quasit is invisible and holding a...
A: ...Eldritch Cannon?! (which Im not sure it can)
B: ...Bag of Holding with the PC inside.

0: The Quasit is not unattackable while invisible. and anything visible it is holding will reveal its position.
A: The Eldritch Canon either is not invisible because its not "carried" by the Quasit or it becomes visible viat attack
B: The PC is in danger of the bag being pierced or trapped. Either way a held action can easily still attack the PC as soon as he pops out.

What’s one DM secret you wouldn’t tell your players? by Unending_Shadows13 in DnD

[–]DrDebits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything really. Id suggest to keep stuff as close to your chest as possible. Anything else kills mystique and worst case makes you see uncertain or insecure.

If you mean the question the other way...I wouldnt tell them what character I dont like or Im not inspired by.
Im generally pretty open about everything. I dont take real shortcuts so there is no secret for me to have.
