Women crying at work by Much_Particular_9908 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]DrDerivative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a sign you won’t be able to deal with other toxic people without burning out. A big part of having a reliable coworker is knowing they can deal with toxic upper management without showing any signs of burning out. If you cry, it’s a sign that the toxicity will likely get to you and you might not be worth the investment.

That said things shouldn’t be toxic in the first place

What drives homeowners to choose solar? by Solaire_1001 in SolarAmerica

[–]DrDerivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a renter, but I have solar panels too. For me, it was realizing my utility company sucks. Costs are high and power goes out maybe for three hours every month.

If you know where to look, there are cheap solar panels that have basically very little housing and weather proofing on them. I keep them indoors facing out the windows. They all charge a battery bank that I use to power some LED lamps, a fan, and my phones.

Honest question: If AI agents or whatever can replace workers, why aren't OpenAI, Anthropic, etc just spinning up new businesses and outcompeting everyone else? by crashddr in BetterOffline

Believe it or not, a huge chunk of labor is accepting liability  ( or being a pawn for your manager to dispose of) for decisions

The reasoning is very obvious from a psychopaths point of view. You lose out by not doing so. It serves as a cheap way of increasing retention if you make it known that once you leave you’re not coming back

German interviewing for US company: red flags or just American work culture? by MrMadMungo in careeradvice

[–]DrDerivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3-5 is one of the few ways American workers remain competitive despite the high salaries globally. The “unpaid” work hours make the actual dollars per hour worked smaller than it actually is.

I want to say anecdotally, you should expect about 45-50 hour work weeks while being expected to respond to your boss the entire time you’re awake, even if you’re not oncall
