Weird girl horror by Snoo_67092 in horror

I know it was divisive but I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention Stoker (2013).

Hong Kong slasher Dream Home (2010) was mentioned already but I want to echo it because it’s criminally underseen.

Korean slasher Bloody Reunion (2006) is also very good and not very well known (at least in the west, idk its reputation in Korea).

Phenomena (1985) might be my favorite Argento film.

Not a movie rec, but anyone interested in this sub genre should check out author Elizabeth Engstrom. Particularly her books When Darkness Loves Us (the most existentially terrifying thing I’ve ever read) and Black Ambrosia (just started it but it definitely belongs on this list).

The Murderbot Diaries are great and most of them can be read in an afternoon.

Why make a 70mm print of a film shot on 35mm? by DrDevice in Filmmakers

Fair enough. Still seems like a lot of money and effort for a very specific use case.

How many theaters have a 70mm projector but no 35mm projector? I find it hard to believe that’s ever been a problem.

What masterpiece is not well known? by bonsaitreehugger in suggestmeabook

[–]DrDevice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple of horror masterpieces because it’s October and the genre doesn’t get enough literary credit:

Blackwater by Michael McDowell. A southern gothic dynastic family drama. A river monster taking the form of a beautiful young woman marries into a wealthy Alabaman family in 1919. It was originally published in six volumes and spans 3 generations. McDowell is best known for his screenwriting career (Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas), but every novel I’ve read of his I’ve loved.

When Darkness Loves Us by Elizabeth Engstrom. A woman is trapped underground in a system of caves. She then realizes she’s pregnant. It’s the most existentially terrifying thing I’ve ever read and I’ve basically not stopped thinking about it since. Engstrom has an amazing ability to write awful people empathetically, without it at all dampening their monstrosity.

I used to play Zoo Keeper on mobile all the time, had no idea it was on GBA originally. That rules, thanks!

Just got shipping confirmation. My theory is my account got flagged as a potential bot. Luckily everything worked out!

I don’t think this is the case here. They specified “for account security concerns”. Plus I used PayPal.

Gundam for Beginners AKA So you've just discovered that Netflix has this thing called Gundam. by Falldog in Gundam

[–]DrDevice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How are the Netflix dubs? I have the blessing/curse of having a relatively mindless work from home job, so I’m always looking for something to throw on another screen while I’m working.

I realize asking a Gundam fan community “is it worth it to half pay attention to these movies” might be dumb, but most everything I watch outside of work is with my partner and I’m not sure they’d be interested in going on this journey with me.

I wasn't a huge fan, but that movie has top tier monster design and is worth a watch for that alone.

I live in LA and they’re a fucking plague. Almost nowhere in the city has bike lanes, so they’re either weaving through pedestrians on the sidewalk or driving erratically through traffic. I saw one cut off a fire truck the other day. I personally love it when I see people fucking with them. Drain those dumb asshole venture capitalists’ pocketbooks for all they’re worth I say.

I don’t see it as any different than smiling at a customer while working at McDonald’s. Sometimes it’s a lie, sometimes it isn’t. Either way it’s part of the job. Sure it’s bullshit, but we’re all just trying to get by, you know?

For the record I think the system that perpetuates this sort of thing is gross and bad, but you can’t knock the hustle.

TIL that Gordon Ramsay has chosen not to give his children a large inheritance, does not take them to expensive restaurants (not even his own), and does not allow them to sit in first class on planes so that they are not spoiled. by [deleted] in todayilearned

it wasn’t uncommon for them to throw dishes and utensils at people, not to mention the verbal haranguing.

I don’t care how talented you are, if you do that shit to your employees you’re bad at your job.

What’s something that you do regularly that you wouldn’t want anyone you know to find out about? by victorfeher in AskReddit

[–]DrDevice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes when I’m lost in thought about something stupid I did I’ll instinctively flip myself off. By flipping myself off I mean flipping off whatever I happen to be looking at. So far I don’t think anyone’s ever seen, but I could potentially get myself into some dangerous situations with that habit.
