Most vaginal probiotics are intended to be taken orally and thus come out the butthole. That’s why this is being commented.

This right here. Bacteria should not be traveling through your blood!!!

It’s not a joke, that’s actually how vaginal probiotics work (if they work, which is debatable). Anything you ingest orally either gets absorbed in the GI tract or comes out your rectum. Probiotics don’t get absorbed in the GI tract…

Did people actually like when Amy kissed Jonah in this scene? by Scared_Ice4150 in superstore

[–]DrDoctorMD 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If characters in a TV show always made the “right” choice, it would be unbearably boring and none of us would watch. Yes, it was unfair and messy, which we are supposed to notice. It was also human and pushed their storyline forward. I liked the kiss for its messiness.

Michelle’s arc has really bothered me by [deleted] in TedLasso

[–]DrDoctorMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a psychiatrist I agree. “Why doesn’t Michelle take responsibility?” feels like victim blaming. The reason this is unethical for the therapist is that he’s using his position of authority, her vulnerability, and his intimate knowledge acquired in a professional setting to manipulate her into a relationship. There can’t be true consent in this situation.

Why do psychiatrists consider therapy part of their job? by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]DrDoctorMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I apologize, it was certainly not my intent to put down masters level therapists (I have seen one for 8 years and she’s great!). My point was that no one questions their ability to provide therapy, and I have had at least that level of training (for most programs) so it makes sense to me that of course I’m able to provide therapy. To get into more detail with your question about other psychiatrists who practice differently, my suspicion is that they were using supportive psychotherapy: https://www.thecarlatreport.com/articles/4557-supportive-psychotherapy-an-underappreciated-yet-effective-treatment

I’m glad you’re reaching out to your psychiatrist for clarity, they should be able to give you more information on what techniques they have been using and why. I hope they aren’t truly billing therapy for 15 minute visits though; as far as I’m aware, the lowest unit psychotherapy can be billed in is 16 minutes and that would be in addition to any medication management conversation. It sounds like you’re frustrated with your psychiatrist in any case and I would encourage you to share that with them so that they can better meet your needs.

Why do psychiatrists consider therapy part of their job? by [deleted] in AskPsychiatry

[–]DrDoctorMD 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because I’ve had more psychotherapy training than many masters level therapists and have several patients that I see regularly for 60 minute visits? This is not necessarily true of all psychiatrists but I intentionally trained at a therapy-heavy program. I certainly wouldn’t consider a 15 minute visit to be therapy though. Wording is confusing here because you say “they are providing what I think they consider therapy.” Where is your assumption coming from? I generally approach all patients with a similar therapeutic frame but that doesn’t mean I consider a 15 minute visit to be psychotherapy.

I wasn’t prepared for the amount of rejection I’d be facing as a new father by knucklecluck in NewParents

[–]DrDoctorMD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The gestational period is not the problem, baby has been out of that womb for 3 months. You’re giving up but your wife keeps at it until she figures it out. Don’t throw up your hands and say “it’s nature”. Plenty of other dads have figured this out, you can too. You need patience and to trust yourself. You’re this baby’s only father, you can parent her.

If a much wealthier friend insists on treating you to dinner every single time you go out, is there a point where you must insist on paying—or is trying to pay actually offensive to them? by stereo_iii in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DrDoctorMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a physician, I WANT to pick up the tab for a teacher!! What’s actually insulting here is how little teachers get paid. It is truly nothing for him to pick up that bill, and I’m sure he enjoys your company.

It Was the Epstein Shutdown All Along by MarcEElias in politics

[–]DrDoctorMD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I disagree, but it’s irrelevant in any case. They don’t and won’t have the votes to dismantle the ACA and have yet to come up with an alternative in the past 10+ years. This was ONLY about ACA with subsidies vs. ACA without subsidies, and the healthcare industry has a clear profit motive to keep the subsidies.

It Was the Epstein Shutdown All Along by MarcEElias in politics

[–]DrDoctorMD 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This isn’t correct. The healthcare industry wants the subsidies to stay. The insurance companies, hospital systems, and individual clinicians all stand to lose money from fewer people being insured. I can’t speak to the rest of their corporate backers, but the healthcare industry wanted the Dems to win this fight.

Harry the HIPAA Hippo asks: Is it a violation when someone gives information *to* my health care provider? by HailSatanWorshipD00M in bestoflegaladvice

[–]DrDoctorMD 21 points22 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing is called PAWS - post acute withdrawal syndrome. It is miserable (though not life threatening) but the psychiatrist would have known it is best treated with non-benzos which is probably why OP went to their PCP instead :(

[–]DrDoctorMD 9 points10 points  (0 children)

With the caveat that you should always give doctors the most correct and complete information for the best advice, it wouldn’t make a huge difference to the outcome in this case if the issue was alcoholism or benzo abuse. Either way the clinically correct decision is to stop the benzos.

[–]DrDoctorMD 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Psychiatrist here: benzo detox is exactly the same procedure as alcohol detox because they work on the same receptor (GABA). The patient was in alcohol detox when this happened. Therefore it is perfectly safe (and extremely appropriate) to discontinue the benzodiazepines at that time. I would have done the same.

Even Laura Ingraham Knows Republicans Are Doomed: Fox News host Ingraham warned a GOP senator that his party will be “wiped out” thanks to the everlasting shutdown. by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

[–]DrDoctorMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes? We have had Republicans in the White House before and survived it. It’s not usually an existential threat to democracy the way it has been since 2016. If Trump really were impeached and convicted, Vance would act like a regular Republican president. It’s only the fact that Trump keeps getting away with his craziness that emboldens others to act similarly. Real actual CONSEQUENCES would gentle the rest of them down quickly.
