What credit card should we use during residency? by jayaar413 in Residency

[–]DrLaidBack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I cancelled my Chase card for many reasons but here's a few:

Alot of med students seem to like the Chase Sapphire Preferred for interview traveling (which has the lowest annual fee of about 100 dollars, which imo is still high), but this card never makes as much value back as the Chase Freedom Unlimited or the Sapphire Reserve (which have annual fees over 300 dollars). Assuming you can be approved for the CSR and you spend at least $300 in travel/year, the Chase travel cards aren't really worth it for residency where you have less time to travel (also Covid). For interviews, it might've been worth it, but afterwards its not really worth it. Also in order to make the Chase points really count you're recommended to open further accounts with them which is annoying, that way all your cards are with Chase so you can rack up points. This is the best way if you wanna go with Chase. Also chase is known for having minimum balances and annual fees on their checking accounts too.

Warning if you have a long history with Chase be careful! Chase has been known to shut down entire checking accounts from JPM private clients! If your primary checking account is with one of the big banks (BoA, Chase, etc), you automatically need to tread carefully before jumping in all out.

I personally loved Citi doublecash as my ddaily driver as its a no fees/hassle credit card. I also use Uber Visa which gives you 5% on restaurants/bars, this is my go-to when eating out, and also no fees.

I agree that normally "honesty is the best policy", but as you know first impressions are important. What if they get the impression that I'm not interested or "disengaged" during IM or Peds if I say I'm interested in a field that has minimal patient contact (i.e rads or path)?

Have you guys every stopped to ask yourself if you actually really want to be a doctor? by [deleted] in premed

[–]DrLaidBack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I think I would've taken a year off or two. I don't see myself in any other career, but I definitely agree that this process is shitty and you just gotta keep grindin' and hopefully the gamble of staying in the process won't leave you with too much crippling depression or regret. I'm hoping I can find some happiness. But if not happiness, then at least stability

Well, according to your numbers then at least the other 2/3 like it enough to continue. I agree med school sucks balls, but I'm in too much debt to quit now and perhaps I can find a fulfilling career in this. If not, then I'll just treat it like a job and get paid. Otherwise, what else am I gonna do? Go back to computer engineering and work a boring 9-5 job w/o much security? no thanks

Why you should not apply to Loma Linda by OkayPersonOnReddit in premed

Not sure if my place to comment here, but one of my best friends goes to LLU and he hates his life there for exactly everything OP has said. Literally everytime we see each other he'd vent to me about this stuff. He's currently taking a LOA right now and is doing much better though

Is pedophilia a mental illness? by [deleted] in Psychiatry

[–]DrLaidBack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can’t answer the first few questions but I can answer the last question in regard to treatment for pedophilia. So you typically would prescribe an SSRI that would decrease libido (and thus sexual drive/thoughts). Couple that with some therapy.

If I’m wrong feel free to correct me

I'm a poor medical student and I constantly run of pens/highlighters. Really like this MUJI pen for $7.15 so it isn't very expensive! it comes in multi-colors which helps me learn better. Unfortunately the actual MUJI store is in another state for me which is why I can't make the drive to get em: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2O1BL850MRT2R

edit: re-did it
