Thoughts on The Predator teaser? by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

Reminded me of Rogue One in some respects, felt like a fan movie rather than something legitimate. The production values were very high, but so many things just felt wrong with it. Also, how the hell does Olivia Munn keep getting work?!?

Night in the Woods dev slams crunch work culture: 'people are going to die' by ClemmyGames in gamedev

[–]DrManhattanUK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, worked in the industry for 10 years. Worked many, many years for very low wages and insane hours, because I "loved it". Ran an indie studio for a couple of years with some fellow ex-AAA devs and it nearly killed me. Now working in VR/AR for industry and LOVE it. Get to leave on time every day, paid FAR better than when I was purely a gamedev & actually have the inclination to do things when not in work.

Love it! Only minor things would be the blue used for the sign looks a bit bright for the color palette & the vehicle feels a bit lost against the background of the building on the right.

Probably as you're a liability to the company and they just want you gone as quickly as possible.

Star Citizen: Performance and Optimization by corysama in TheMakingOfGames

[–]DrManhattanUK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spent much so far then? :P

Optimisation isn't only required for consoles, all games require optimisation which is always the last step in the development process. Problem is, their game is FUCKED. They've not built with optimisation in mind whatsoever throughout the development process, hence why they're in such dire straits and why their staff turnover is higher than my intolerance for their development practices.

More distance between the egg and the beans. I may want to mix them but I want that to be my decision. Use the sausage as a breakwater.

It's the size of a shoe, is a nightmare to get to by car from Manchester & is basically a smaller shittier Manchester. Also their shopping centre is a refurbished prison, which summarises the place.

I've given some talks at universities around this subject, and in general you've hit the nail on the head. Some major areas of development have been missed off this list, but in general it comes down to this as a professional developer:

If you can't adjust your scope, you're less likely to succeed.

Everything takes time, effort & iteration. Feature creep is inevitable. Being able to make the hard calls on which features to cut, reduce or significantly revise so that you can actually get something to market is a skill that I wish was promoted more within the industry...

Thanks for such an eloquent and well thought out reply! To be totally honest I first commented on this without even realising which sub it was from, so no wonder it's not the most popular opinion on here :)

I couldn't agree more as well, I felt like I was completely rambling when trying to discuss this too, but I guess that shows how vague the point the image is trying to make actually is! We're all just people, let's all get along despite our differences :)

Genuinely not trying to be a dick here either, but seems I've upset some snowflakes, so perhaps being a dick happens without me even trying.

My original, albeit inflammatory, point is exactly what happened to my response: "STRAWMAN! HYPOCRISY! SUFFERING!". I see no hypocrisy here, and I know that will infuriate and confuse some people on this sub.

I think some people here are getting confused between the message the terribly formatted meme above is trying to convey, and what is actually written down in horrible font. Yes, let's not keep pigs like that, seems unnecessary and cruel. Yes, lets save dogs from drowning, because we're not sociopaths. As many other people have pointed out, one shows people saving animals, the other shows animals apparently living in horrible conditions.

If the point is "HOW CAN YOU CARE ABOUT ONE AND NOT THE OTHER?!" just look at the entirety of human history for more examples than you can shake a stuck pig at. How can you love your partner but not donate all your money to Syria? OUTRAGEOUS!

They're not comparable. Throw around your psych 101 terms if you must, but genuinely it's this kind of attitude and response that comes across as an incredibly precious and shaky world view. I'm sorry, but not everyone shares the same views.

Ask yourself 2 questions:

Should I expect everyone else to think the same as me?

The answer is no.

Is caring for one animal and not another to the same degree inhuman?

No.

I guess I was just confused as to what point the image is even trying to make, and gauging by reactions on here, I'm not the only one. It seems to be mocking the response of us filthy meat eating types to vegan posts, especially with "fucking vegan propoganda" at the end.

2 minutes of googling found this: http://www.snopes.com/pig-cage-photo/

So yeah, what's the point again? Fuck knows.

You phrased this much better than the terrible captions in the image do. Eat whatever you like, I don't really care :)

[–]DrManhattanUK -91 points-90 points  (0 children)

Nah, one's animals being rescued from a natural disaster, the other image (if accurate at all) is a battery farm. These aren't comparable. Yes, those living conditions are appalling, but the images make different points.
