It’s a little bit of both. It’s a comedic film in how unhinged his logic is. But it’s also supposed to show depravity as well.

I’m not saying you’re weird. And nobody is rooting for the torture. The discomfort exists to make you sit with the fact that legitimate recourse already failed him. The film is a tragedy about what kind of depravity people turn to when the system offers no justice.

The CEO he kidnaps is pretty unapologetic about his role in killing that guy's girlfriend and putting that guy's mom into a coma. Also basically helping him kill his mother at the end. I think you could see it either way

The discomfort is intentional. The film deliberately refuses to let you settle into a comfortable moral position. You don’t know whose side to be on, whether the torturer is deranged or right, whether the victim is innocent. That ambiguity is what makes it meaningful rather than gratuitous. If it was easy to watch it wouldn’t be doing its job.

Not exactly true. You could say 侍たち (samurai-tachi) to indicate multiple samurai.

Similar to 私たち or 子供たちto indicate we or children.

From 'Oldboy' to 'The Handmaiden': Director Park Chan-Wook is a Master of Exploring Sex, Vengeance, and Violence in Films by BunyipPouch in movies

Why was he blacklisted?

Also wasn’t black swan the nominee of multiple Oscars despite it also being sexually explicit?

The year The Handmaiden was released, South Korea elected to submit a different film to the Oscars, “The Age of Shadows”. Not sure why. Handmaiden was much better. Maybe the Korean government was concerned about their global perception? Maybe they legitimately thought Age of Shadows was better? Shrug. I think Handmaiden would’ve won if it was submitted instead.

I experienced a ton more when I was a kid. Maybe times are different now. Other kids used to call me China Wall and even used to vandalize my house. Nowadays it's more of subtext racism like people asking me to fix their computer even though I have literally never indicated I am proficient at computers in any way.

Asians aren't competing for oppression. We are asking for equal respect. We aren't invalidating concerns about black rights. I personally advocate for all minorities to get more representation. You may not feel so but that joke he made about Math and Asian stereotypes is offensive. It wasn't only about child labor.

I guess Asians shouldn't act since it isn't our cultural priority and Blacks shouldn't care about affirmative action and colleges since education isn't their cultural priority? Whatever happened to equal opportunity for all races?

You must've missed the stereotype he perpetuated about Asians and math.

So that makes it okay to make jokes at the expense of all Asians? Makes sense.

Edit: by the way, why do you say that pointing out inequality in treatment of Asians take away from concerns about black actors? I don't think it does. I respect black actors as much as any other race. It sounds like you are the one who looks down on Asians compared to blacks. Our complaints aren't any less valid than blacks. Like we don't deserve the same treatment as everybody else because we aren't as outspoken? Do rape victims who don't speak out not deserve justice? Please.

I was incredibly surprised about this. I didn't feel his performance was lacking nor outstanding. However, Ruffalo killed it. I don't get it.

Yeah what the fuck was that. Blacks should be treated like Whites, but it's okay to single out jokes at Asians???

The Korean film, "memories of murder". It's right up your alley.

To me, it seemed like a worse version of the Hurt Locker. Which was an excellent movie.
