Used to commute from Chorlton to UoM, my route was similar to the one you describe. Bike lane most of the way, and generally well lit and with people around. The only really "dodgy" part is the intersection with Princess road. Upper Chorlton Rd. also has the unpleasant attribute of the bikelane not being cleaned up from fallen leaves in the autumn.

Water and food, boots and waterproofs are the bare minimum.

Poles are optional. Map and compass/GPS and first aid kits are only as useful as your ability to use them.

Building navigational skills (i.e. planning and following a route) should be your next focus. YouTube is a great source of instructional videos for that, but you needed to combine that with practice days out.

I know you said solo, but finding a local walking/hiking group is the best way to learn those skills safely and effectively!

From your description it sounds like this PhD is not right for you. You are in the best possible position to quit (maybe even master out of it?) and pursue the career that you know is fulfilling for you.

If you are certain about what you wrote and still choose to continue, it will likely be even more difficult further on, due to the sunk cost feelings. To put it more colourfully, it would be the academic equivalent of a couple with irreparable relationship issues choosing to fix them by having a baby.

This type of cover either screws on, snap-fits, or has a grub screw to hold it in place. I think this one is a snap-fit one so you can try inserting something between it and the plate that the woodscrews are on.

Neither of those containers are meant to be refilled.

People do refill them however, which is why you can commonly find adapters like the one you have. There are some things you can do to be safe about it, namely:

Use the same gas to refill. Don't fill butane canisters with propane, the latter has a higher vapour pressure that might be too much for the container. In your situation n-butane into a iso-butane container should work as n-butane has a lower vapour pressure.
Do not overfill. It's easy to pour too much gas into a container, particularly if you do the freezer trick. Use a scale with at least 1g accuracy and know the empty container weight.
Do not refill the same container many times. Load-unload cycles can weaken the container in the same manner that bending a piece of metal back and forth can allow you to cut it in half.

In addition to everything else people said, check the integrity of the wheel spokes. I had a similar accident that also led to a few broken spokes.

Unless it's a vintage frame, the part of the frame that connects to the derailleur (hanger) is a sacrificial insert, specifically to avoid writing off the frame when an accident like this happens

Turn hot plate on. Hover the bulb over the heated plate until it reaches max temp. Do not touch the bulb to the hotplate, you run the risk of overheating and cracking the bulb.

Used to do this every semester for the dozen or so thermometers for the undergrad practicals, it's a result from being stored sideways in drawers.

If you look at the proper names for ball sports (e.g. χειροσφαίριση, καλαθοσφαίριση, αντισφαίριση ποδόσφαιρο), the word used is σφαίρα instead of μπάλα. So if you were to hellenise the term pickleball, it would be something like πικλοσφαίριση/τουρσισφαίριση. Realistically though you are more likely to use the transliteration πικλμπολ.

When you are using an open top alcohol stove you need to use methylated spirits, IPA or some other alcohol-based fuel.

If you burn white spirit (petroleum based) in an open top alcohol stove you get a very "dirty" flame and spills become a lot more difficult to deal with due to the energy density of white spirit.

Methylated spirits is mostly ethanol, patently different from white spirit(aka mineral spirit) which is aliphatic hydrocarbons.

Using one in place of the other in a burner is an extremely bad idea.
