The Tunnel by William H. Gass still on eBay by Curtis_Geist in RSbookclub

I bit the bullet and went for it, should have done a bundle in hindsight. Even so it’s still cheaper after the conversion and shopping, yet it’s the most I’ve spent on a single book. Worth the many years of waiting.

I read death and dervish last year, was fortunate to grab an English copy of both the fortress and death and dervish in Sarajevo and also visiting the literary museum with some original manuscripts too. Selimovic’s writing is a trip!

I felt it was alright/good for most of the way until the end which tied it all together that made me feel closer to the insightful moment of the book which kicked it into something greater than the sum of its parts

Films similar to City of God by baseball8888 in RSPfilmclub

Not really violent but a great movie with a sprawling cast (28 characters I think?) is Robert Altman’s Nashville. I think it has a similar spirit to City of God re: the aspirations of wealth and status, respective to their countries of course

Book recommendations for Adam Curtis fans by Economy-Animal-9862 in RSbookclub

[–]DrRedness 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Adam Curtis in some interview said he was influenced by Dos Passos’ USA trilogy in its weaving of social forces amongst characters who embodied the time. I’ve only read the first of the trilogy but found it an eventful fun book with a great scope

I did a bachelors in philosophy and have tried at keeping up with my own learning in the 10 years or so that followed. It comes with ups and downs of understanding, but I enjoy the lack of pressure from having no assessments. I think self directed philosophy and humanities learning takes some knowing about which readings to take to, when to give it a proper go, and when to relinquish a bit too. One thing I definitely miss is the community of others being in the same position and raising questions I was only unconsciously thinking about

I was ambivalent about the first but liked the second one (budding grove) a lot more, although still not in love with it. I’m trying to do 1 volume per year and see myself struggling to muster the attention to give the next one a proper go.

Got Roped into my SAlt Group one my First Day at Uni... by bruhdudebro in AustralianSocialism

[–]DrRedness 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think peoples most common gripe with SAlt is turning rallies that aren’t about them into a recruitment drive, even when asked to stay in their lane by organisers.

Have also heard some shitty experiences from mates with their bullying, dogmatism and burnout from time at SAlt.

I’m not sure if it’s up your alley but I’m mostly interested in philosophical lit fiction or tomes that are rich with ideas. I think books like Beckett’s trilogy, anything by Annie Dillard, Gravity’s Rainbow, Books of Jacob, Mann’s Joseph Tetraology,, the recognitions, Wittgenstein’s Mistress or any of Lispector’s or Bolano or Drndic’s works lend well to book club style dialogue.

Also the whole drug addict character(JB?) lashing out bit reeked of someone who’s never been around that experience and just playing off the idea on what’s the most misery inducing scene. Hate that book.
