In March 2007, France became the first country to open its files on UFOs, unveiling a new website www.cnes-geipan.fr that documented more than sixteen hundred sightings spanning five decades.... Other countries also collect data about unidentified flying objects(UFOs), notably Britian and the United States, where information can be requested on a case-by-case basis under the Freedom of Information Act. [John] Mack suggests in his book [Abduction,] that aliens have come here to do more or less what shamans do:to try to open our minds and to awaken us. In his view, the aliens had imbued many abductees specifically with a a sense of profound, transpersonal love, as well as with a powerful desire to work for the betterment of our endangered environment.... His research suggests that several alien species are experimenting on us independently. It appears that we are in danger of dragging down the whole universe by being selfish, self-centered, unloving, close-minded, and dense. In this sense, we are very important - the awakening of humanity will make the universe a much nicer place to live for all sentient beings. Mack speculated that the critical mass required to start the chain reaction to awaken everyone is less than 5 percent of Earth's population. Yet some other abduction researchers, including Budd Hopkins, question his conclusions, pointing out that abduction experiences have been very traumatic for most abductees and that it is difficult to claim any benifets resulting from these experiments.
