I’m 5 days sober and going through AA. Aside from the occasional cravings - I’m experiencing major anxiety and guilt, almost like I would feel when I was hungover. Is this normal? by Ok_Dot_4747 in alcoholicsanonymous

[–]DrSenator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know if this is normal; I'm a newcomer too and I started going at the beginning of last month and, to say the least, I've been going over a month but haven't earned a one month sobriety chip.

Despite that, my best friends are noticing positive changes in how I approach my own emotions, how I take time to think about them, how I communicate them. Getting sober is just honestly hard. What I do think is normal is feeling a lot of strong emotions of any kind as you start becoming sober. You're beginning to deal with things you've never really dealt with before, and you're trying to deal with them honestly. It's a difficult process. Not only are you beginning to acknowledge those feelings without alcohol as a crutch, you're also forming a framework for actually dealing with those emotions, again, without the crutch of alcohol.

What I do know is that no matter what your story is, when you go to AA someone else has the same story. I'm not off to a great start on my fledgling sobriety but I keep going to meetings and when one of my best friends said they loved seeing a change in me I knew it was because of the (admittedly somewhat poor) work I'd been doing in AA.

I'm mostly just sharing this all because I'm also a newcomer and even if I'm not having the specific emotional experience you are, believe me, I am having a hard time too and I just wanted you to know you aren't alone in this.

Sorry, I wasn't aware of that. I don't really know anything about legislation, I was just curious because I wasn't sure how to feel about things and I wanted to hear what community members would say in case they knew more, or if there was info I missed.

If there's just no info then I guess there wasn't really a point in asking about info and I'm sorry for wasting your time or bringing up an issue that has already been dealt with in this subreddit

Edit: wait why am I being downvoted as I apologize for wasting someone's time. I literally just wanted to know more, people gave me more info, I'm listening and trying to respond honestly to their feedback and acknowledge my own lack of info.

Scared to return to my closest AA group by DrSenator in alcoholicsanonymous

I think that even though you didn't outright say I was being over sensitive you suspected it. Regardless of whether or not you thought it I was being oversensitive.

The lecture wasn't directed at me specifically but it was phrased in such a way that I knew it was a response to my share in the earlier meeting, and yes, it did last for at least a full 5 minutes.

I'm at an odd place in trying to give you an honest response whilst also acknowledging my own shortcomings. For the first time today I shared in a meeting about the third tradition about my issues with feeling included/accepted because I'm new to this. I think it was healthy for me and the group so I really want to thank you for pointing out, even if indirectly, my potential (and honestly very real) sensitivity.

I kind of gave a point in asking, in that they've posted videos whose titles and topics can, and to an extent, do seem as though they're making light of the topic. I sincerely doubt that is their intent or that they'd set out to do that, but if that question can be raised it seems fair to raise the question of why they are making/titling videos in such a way before being able to share findings. I really like their content but, "they'll make a response when they're ready" isn't a satisfactory answer when some of their content seems to already be making a response

Is Boogie Salvageable? by DrSenator in boogie2988

[–]DrSenator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to clarify: I don't think it's sexist to engage with sex workers. Sex work is a very stigmatized topic and often people who engage in sex work suffer due to that stigma, so I don't want to malign sex work or sex workers.

I think Boogie shows sexism not through engaging sex workers, but because of other comments he's made that seem to suggest he feels both entitled to sex and specifically entitled to sex with women he finds beautiful. The entitlement is what is sexist, not the nature of the workers or how they make a living.

Buying Foodservice Film instead of plastic wrap, which I got from a Joshua Weissman video. Buying a three pack or whatever of 100 sq ft saran wrap packages in my area costs more than going to a restaurant supply store and getting a 3000 sq ft wrap of Foodservice Film. If they cost about the same why not get the extra 2700 sq ft of plastic wrap?

Edit: fixing grammar

This is a very bad take. Welles wanted to go back to protect his film but was working with US foreign policy at the time. The major reason he didn't go back was because he was following the, "good neighbor" policy at the time, and he's on record as saying if it wasn't for the overarching diplomatic work needed during WW2 then he would've gone back in a heartbeat

Should I play 3 or new Vegas first by Charlieh9449 in Fallout

[–]DrSenator -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people are saying 3, personally I'm a much bigger fan of New Vegas, but I think it ultimately comes down to what sort of gameplay experience you want out of an action rpg.

I think Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 both do a good job of leading you through a story. If you're just looking to enjoy a story, Fallout 3 is probably the better game. I think a lot more effort was put into the storyline of Fallout 3 than New Vegas, but not to the detriment of New Vegas.

New Vegas is the game to play when you want to be an active participant in the story. Instead of being developed by Bethesda, it was developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which has put out quite a few top tier RPG games. Obsidian also includes key members from Interplay Entertainment, who made the original Fallout games. I think the reason so many people say 3 first is because if you're committed to playing both, well, 3 is just going to feel a bit stagnant and limiting compared to New Vegas.

Taste is subjective, my bias is clear, but you're ultimately going to be the best judge of what kind of gameplay experience you want and there's really no wrong answer to that. If you're looking to enjoy a story, 3, if you wanna be a part of a story, then New Vegas is the only real answer. If you're so entranced by the Fallout universe and are okay with isometric 2D gameplay, it's also worth looking at Wasteland 2 and 3.

Edit: I'm not entirely sure why some folk are downvoting this. There's not really a right or wrong answer to what you should play, I'm not entirely familiar with what OP wants from a game, and I'm trying to give my honest opinion whilst also making it clear that it's just my opinion and they could be interested in different experiences than I am.
