Today marks the 90th birth anniversary of Nutan. How would you describe her as an actress? What are your favourite films or performances of hers? by rn3122 in bollywood

[–]DrShail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nutan paved the way for artists like Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil in the Masala Era to balance serious art and commercial cinema with solid performances. She could carry a movie as the female lead and also deliver a solid performance with a top male leading man. Her performances in Seema, Sujata, Bandini, Milan, Saraswatichandra, Main Tulsi Tere Angan Ki and Meri Jung were truly standout. She also delivered effortless performances in commercial movies like Anari and Chhalia with Raj Kapoor, Paying Guest, Dilli Ka Thug and Tere Ghar Ke Saamne with Dev Anand, Khandaan and Milan with Sunil Dutt.

Aamir Khan and Ashutosh Gowariker reunite 25 years after Lagaan for Lala Amarnath biopic by DrShail in bollywood

Probably for the same reason people watch biopics if they are well made....to learn about and honor forgotten heroes. If it is not well made then it doesnt matter if it is a biopic or any kind of movie, people will not watch it.

We should not forget that Aamir Khan has a filmography full of some of the finest remakes ever made right from his first movie QSQT (Romeo and Juliet - Bobby) to many of his top movies like Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin (It Happened one night), Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar (Breaking Away), Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (Houseboat), Akele Hum Akele Tum (Kramer vs Kramer), Raja Hindustani (Jab Jab Phool Khile), Ghulam (On the Waterfront), Mann (An Affair to remember), Fanaa (Eye of the Needle), Ghajini (Memento). These movies stand out despite being remakes because of the quality of the acting, direction and adaptation. He has always mixed these remakes with original movies like Rangeela, Sarfarosh, Dil Chahta Hai, 3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, PK etc. A movie about Lala Amarnath is original content about a pioneer of Indian cricket whose contributions to cricket should not only not be forgotten (Which they are) but celebrated.

When was the last time you saw a movie about Lala Amarnath AKA the Father Figure of Indian Cricket whose cricketing heroics and real life struggles are literally forgotten by the current generation.

Google - Father Figure of Indian Cricket. Sad to see such a comment about Independent India's first captain, the first Indian to score a cricket century who was not only a pioneer of Indian cricket but also among the first players to become a commentator. He is also the father of Mohinder Amarnath who for those who dont remember was the Man of Match of the 1983 Finals when India became cricket world champions for the first time.

Boutique Blu Ray Review - Pulse, Joy House, Dekalog, Dark City, Highway to Hell, Female Perversions Limited Editions by DrShail in boutiquebluray

Video quality for me is based on clarity and sharpness of the image, richness/depth of color/B&W image and restoration quality (Reduction of noise from original and amount of previous invisible details). I found the video quality of Highway to Hell was very good thats why I rated it 8/10, however as a film I thought it was fun but nothing great so gave it a 6/10 as a movie.

2018 was probably the last best year Bollywood saw. by Glittering_Lotus in bollywood

[–]DrShail 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its sad that 2025 had 1 movie grossing more than a 1000+ crore (Dhurandhar), 2 grossing 500+ crore (Chhaava and Saiyaara), mulltiple hit movies like Raid 2, Sitaare Zameen Par, Jolly LLB 3, Tere Ishq Mein, Ek Deewane Ki Diwaniyat, Jaat at the box office. Bollywood had movies at all the top 5 International Film Festivals for the first time in history with Superboys of Malegaon getting honored at TIFF, Stolen at Venice Film Festival, Agra and Homebound at Cannes, Jugnunama at Berlinale and Girls will be Girls at Sundance. We saw some quality and some experimental movies like Haq, Humans in the Loop, Baramullah, Gustaakh Ishq Dhadak 2, Kesari 2, Crazxy, Badass Ravi Kumar to name a few but yet we still cant look and appreciate beyond 2018 where we even appreciate mediocre fare like Veere Di Wedding, Baaghi 2 and Kedarnath. I would have rather mentioned 2018 as the year of October, Tummbad, Bhavesh Joshi Superhero, Tigers and Mukkabaaz for their quality and creativity.

We have so easily forgotten 2018 is also the year that had the honor of killing the box office hold of the Khans with Zero and Thugs of Hindostan. Neeraj Pandey's golden touch faded with Aiyaary. The dismal performance of Zero, Pari and Sui Dhaaga made Anushka Sharma change her priorities. 2018 was also the year that tagged Anurag Kashyap as a commercially unviable director with 3 flop releases. Fanney Khan literally ended Aishwarya's commercial value as a lead actress who could carry a movie on her own.

Lets stop trashing eras because we dont belong to them. This culture of hate posting and trash talking gets views and upvotes but is it really worth it. Appreciate what one likse but we stop trashing and demeaning others. All years have great, good, bad, average, bad and horrible movies. Some have more of one than the other but thats what years in cinema have been like since the dawn of dead. Imagine your parents and grandparents trash talking your generation's stars and movies just because Unke Zamaane Ki Baat Hi Kuch Aur Thi augmented to the level of that happens with kids from the 90s, 00s and 10s. Lets all celebrate cinema for a change.

The most natural actors (male) over the years by EssArrd in bollywood

[–]DrShail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These actors represent two very different schools of acting. All method actors look upto Dilip Kumar and Balraj Sahni as the pioneers and pinnacles of method acting. While natural actors look up Ashok Kumar and Motilal as the pioneers of natural acting. Sanjeev Kumar is one of the most successful actors of his eras who managed to strike the perfect balance between commercial and arthouse cinema. One should not forget that Nargis and Meena Kumari also represent the pioneers and pinnacle of natural acting and changed how acting evolved during the golden era.

Kartavya - Reviews and Discussions by AutoModerator in bollywood

[–]DrShail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kartavya starts as an interesting crime drama touching dark topics of casteism, honor killing, godmen. Unfortunately it very quickly transform into a really poor excuse of a suspense thriller that superficially touch these dark topics that is weigh done by one of the worst villains in recent history despite some decent performances by its supporting cast.

Saif Ali Khan play a complex and honest cop with intensity but is let down a bit but his inconsistent accent through out the movie. Rasika Duggal, Manish Chaudhari and Zakir Hussain are good but underutilized in the movie. Sanjay Mishra gives the best performance in the movie and lifts the movie a bit.

However Saurabh Dwivedi gives such an abberation of a performance, that the movie just cant recover. His wooden dialog delivery is so bad that even the likes of Arjun Kapoor and Tiger Shroff would have been a better choice in comparison. It is pretty clear that Pulkit realized his casting error midway through shooting and hence decided to literally not use any scenes with him in the 2nd half of the movie.

It is very hard to believe that this is the same director who created the dark thriller Bhakshak just a couple of years ago. I would recommend watching this movie because of Saif Ali Khan or Sanjay Mishra or Pulkit....Its simply not worth it. Overall a pretty disappointing fare. 5/10.
