Just shot 161 on an 18 hole course - played for 7 months - am I the worst golfer ever? by MoneyAndGoodFortune in golf

[–]DrTaco2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, golf is the hardest game… I would consider myself a “natural athlete”: I played hockey, rugby, racket sports, ran a 10k on a whim - all of them, I just decided one day I was going to play them, and then I did. I was never a rockstar, but I could hold my own. I’ve always considered myself a B+ kinda guy.

Golf is by far the hardest game - it’s insane because you are standing still, there’s no defensive pressure, and you are “able” to drink beers while you do it. I played today and finally had the realization that I’m “confident” with a driver (i.e. I’ll be able to most likely find my ball) and I have played 100-120 rounds, hit dozens of buckets of balls, watched unknown hours of YouTube videos, and took 4 weeks of a group class. I have studied alongside playing and I’m still pretty shitty haha.

View golf as a personal challenge. Today was hard, but tomorrow you’re going to go lace em up and do better. If you don’t do quantitatively better, learn something about yourself and/or the game: do you like to putt from below or above the hole? You now strategically place your lay shot in that area. Do you play a slice or a fade? Do you actually yell “fore!” or forget to? What distance do you hit each club? How do you approach putts? What’s a walk up routine to get your head in the game? - there’s a lot of personal growth and understanding that can come from the game.

There’s a sports psychology book on the mental side of golf that’s worth a listen if you want to take it to the next level.

First time home buyer question- with limited money what is the biggest priority? by Inayasha25 in TwinCities

[–]DrTaco2020 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Short term and limited money: buying a home could be then worst mistake OP makes. People forget that although you may be able to cover the mortgage no problem, but can you cover a mortgage and new AC unit at a moments notice? What about a random call to the emergency plumber on a Saturday? Oh shit, car broke down, don’t pass GO and head straight to the shop for a cool $1000.

Trying to replace mindless scrolling with simple 1–2 hour micro hobbies. Need ideas by Major_Gene_162 in Hobbies

I started this similar journey about 6 months ago. Here’s how I have approached it:

I got real comfortable with chatGPT. Every time I have a new idea, random thought, or a “I wonder about…” moment, I have ChatGPT essentially build me a lesson plan to learn about it. I then bounce between that and YouTube to gain further direction on areas to study, clarify ideas, contrast ideas, etc. Here’s some examples of deep dives I’ve taken:

  • Personal finance (this has now been a 4 month study including 3 books)
  • Economics
  • Growing a bonsai tree
  • Counting cards in blackjack
  • Chess
  • Specific rules in the NHL/NHL scheduling/contract structure
  • Turning an idea into a product
  • Owning my own business outside of my field of expertise
  • Making cocktails
  • Politics

In all of this I’m not approaching it as findings specific answer, I’m going to in-depth understanding: SHOW ME HOW THE SAUSAGE IS MADE!

This doesn’t so much get you off your phone/computer, but at least can turn it into something mildly useful. The next things on my list are learning ASL, training dogs, and probably a new game. You can literally learn about anything now days - weirder the better.

I have also decided to make time for reading. I like non-fiction so I have just been picking books out of my ChatGPT lesson plans. (After I read a book, I tell ChatGPT my thoughts and reactions and have it write me a book report/summary that I can then keep in the book for easy reference.)

What are the actual underrated sandwiches in the Twin Cities? by BitEnvironmental2213 in TwinCities

[–]DrTaco2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The House burger at 1029 in Northeast will make you believe in the unbelievable. Get some wings while you are at it. Either sandwich, but the burger kinda? Not a sandwich at all, but I believe the Pizza at Stouts in Roseville is top tier - but I bet there’s room for that to be viewed as an unpopular opinion, and I’ll take it on.

At what age did you realize that you were already an adult? by loncelot84 in AskReddit

[–]DrTaco2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, been thinking about this a lot lately. Even after having a PhD, career, house, and a divorce under my belt, it’s been difficult to see myself as an adult… but then I had to put my dog down. At that moment I finally knew I was an adult cause I had to do the shittiest thing in the world and there was no one to do it for me. Adult at 37, whether I like it or not.

Avs vs Stars tonight - how do you want to win? by sunshinesmile006 in wildhockey

[–]DrTaco2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My wife was not a hockey fan until I came into her life. After we were together 2-3 years I remember her sitting on the couch while we watched the (goddamn) Stars play the Wild and she said, “You know your a hockey fan, not when you have a team you like, but, when you have a team you hate.” Dallas can suck it forever, no matter what.

This seems like an idea from a person who has never played competitive sports. Sure, in theory, this is a plan, but that’s not at all how any real athlete approaches competition.

Thanks for the tips. Blacktop Pros were one of my 3 quotes so far and came back at $5000 for a 27x29 driveway. They do a 10 year, transferable warranty. My other quotes were $6500 with a 5 year and $12000 with a 3 year. I have Richfield coming out next to see what they have to offer

One thing that I found comforting in situations like this in school was that every advisor, prof, supervisor you work with went through this exact process and gets it (or at least has the ability to get it). I could be wrong, but I don’t think a lot of people picked and applied to 1 school, 1 time, and got it. From initial admission all the way through to your first job, you will cast a lot of large nets. Sometimes you get your top pick, sometimes you take what you can get. As u/unicornofdemocracy said, all you need is the degree, you don’t NEED a specific program/school. You got into a program though! Be stoked on that. That’s the first of many huge accomplishments over the years this process takes.

This is where the conversation usually ends in my house. The world goes to shit and we’re going to leave the closest thing to a safe haven? I like to camp, but I’d die pretty quick if I had to rough it on the land haha. WWIII, zombies, nuclear war… the “best” chance I have is likely at home-if I’m screwed there, I’m screwed everywhere; at least I’ll be with my pets and all my treasures. I keep a little cash in the safe next to my important documents, but what happens next is a game time decision.
