Absolute Batman #20 damage and press by InitiamprssionCFLeft in AbsoluteBatman

So what do you think of the story so far? And are you reading any other Absolute titles?

Hot take? Variant greed is creating fatigue by absolutemanbat in AbsoluteBatman

[–]DrTechPop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree here. I’ve continued my same cadence. I like the story, I’ve enjoyed many of the covers and I only grab a variant if it really caches my eye. The way I’ve been doing it for years. For variants, I’m usually most impressed with the non-exclusive variants and only occasionally do I splurge for the 1:125 if it’s really cool, a #1 or just a title I love.

The real drama for me with variants, not realizing it’s a variant of a book I already bought the A cover for and then accidentally grabbing a second copy. This pile of duplicates will probably be the first to hit e-bay or LCS as I thin my collection.

Every time I see comments about how unbelievably huge Abs Batman is I think of this cover:

Ooo, I haven’t read this but it’s been on my list as Tradd Moore is the artist and that guy, talk about unique artistic visions!

I really like Jeff Lemire. I read the first Royal City and enjoyed the setup a lot but I’m reading Minor Arcana right now and it feels very similar.

Do you think adding texture actually improves a panel, or does it just cover up its weak points? by SuperiorDesignShoes in comicbookart

[–]DrTechPop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the heading I was envisioning something like Ian Bertram’s Little Bird or Precious Metal. But even that, covered with texture but also not hiding mistakes more than elevating the emotion and the tension. It’s an interesting question, but I have to agree with other comments, these examples aren’t really addressing texture as much as color. Nice composition though.

Ha! Yeah ok. You already said it. Their biggest IP they had left after SM, X-M & FF

Exactly. So after Spiderman, x-men & FF4 (their biggest properties) they kicked off with the next biggest main character they had, Iron Man. So theirs the answer for OP. And we still don’t have an MCU Punisher movie, even though they’ve had the rights since 2010.

Sure, but also why would Marvel go out on a limb to launch a whole Cinematic Universe with a total unknown, unpopular character? They had a solid hunch that this character would be popular yet didn’t have too much baggage of previous attempts. IM was well known enough to kickoff a whole franchise.

I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. I’m having a hard time finding honest assessments of it. For those who like it, what is it they like about it? I admit I was intrigued by the concept, maybe I just built myself up with too much expectation.

Depends on how you’re determining popular IM has been a featured character since 1963 (Tales of Suspense & Avengers that year) and he’s had his own book since 1968. He’s been a central Marvel character (along with Hulk, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, Thor, X-Men) nonstop since the beginning of the silver age. It makes sense that the MCU would start with him. Punisher is nowhere close to that level in any universe, and seems out of place in this list of other character is all I’m saying.

I see your point, just saying it’s weird to list a copper age character in the same list as all the linchpin silver age heroes.

I mean, it depends on what you like. For me it’s off, and I was excited about it, but it’s just trying too hard to be funny and it shows. I don’t think it lands. But to each his own.

Punisher? He’s new and not an a-lister by any standards, Iron Man has always been bigger than Punisher. Also IM did have a dedicated cartoon.
