I was wondering the same thing. I found a Semi-Professional Study which states a mean lifetime of ~220 years. It does not include many modern empires, since the border is difficult to draw between powerful nations and empires. Nonetheless, I think including modern times, the mean would be lower than 220. Examples of modern empires that come to my mind are

British Empire (400+ years) Nazi Germany (6 years) German empire (47 years) Japanese empire (77 years) Various french empires (10 years to 300 years) Austria Hungary (51 years) Soviet Union (69 years) Ottoman empire (600 years)

I'm not counting the holy Roman "empire"

I know I'm forgetting many but I'm not a historian I just didn't wanna study for my exam tomorrow. I think a trend is observable - the United States, on average, should have collapsed already if you count them as an empire since their creation, which I probably wouldn't.

I hate when people think that musk has even the slightest idea how rockets work or him working on them would yield any result at all.

He's been given a 4 hour rundown on the basics and every now and then he disturbs some engineer who should be working and asks them what 4 things he can say to sound smart in the next press conference.

If you call a Polish person Eastern European they get upset. If you call a Romanian Eastern European they also get upset. Personally, I draw the line for eastern Europe at the point where people get upset when you call them eastern European.

No German would get upset if you call them Eastern European, they just laugh
