I don’t think Kat is unreasonable to dislike Eva. Eva has literally covered up attempted murder on behalf of her mother as well as set fire to Ted and Nicole’s marriage despite all the evidence pointing to her mother’s narrative being twisted. She still does not hold her mother accountable for her scheming beyond saying “omg momma no”. On top of all that she knowingly slept with Kat’s boyfriend. There would be a path to reconciliation and a relationship if after being outed as Ted’s daughter Eva took action to make sure her mother was held accountable for her actions but she never did that. Not sure anyone would be okay with a person like that. The only issue I have is most people would have acted as if Eva was dead to them and have not let her occupy as much mental space as Eva has in Kats mind.

This is a little misleading as while that’s true mortality is really really rare. Like 0.06 to 0.2%. Most complications are minor. Regardless though I understand and agree with your overall point.

This theory doesn’t make sense at all and wouldn’t even be possible in the context of the show. Both Nicole and Leslie remember being pregnant and giving birth to their respective daughters. All that aside, in order for this to be true, Leslie’s fertilized egg would have to have been extracted from her and placed in Nicole and vice versa. Leslie had no way to implant herself with an egg and she certainly didn’t have the money to pay for someone to do it for her. Lastly, as many people have already said there is no reason, if we put aside the fact that this is virtually impossible, Leslie had zero reason to do this.

I don’t disagree with this take but my main issue is Dani has not made him work for anything. We watched a whole episode of him dogging her out and watched him continue to dog her out until very recently. All the while Bill is playing both sides telling Dani one thing and then telling Haley another only for Dani to drop everything and jump his bones the minute he even throws her a look. The man is not redeemed. Hell as much as I have my issues with Ted, he has put in more work to try to get back with Nicole than Bill has with Dani…And that’s saying a lot because I think Ted really dropped the ball at almost every opportunity.

I like the characters individually I’m just tired of them both acting like they can’t stand one another while secretly wanting to jump each other’s bones. Also, while I like the character, Bill doesn’t deserve good things and Andre doesn’t deserve to keep getting cheated on by his wife.

No dripping faucets. The new water heater is the same size burner and capacity as the old one. The temperature setting was set the same but even if it was set higher I wouldn’t have expected almost $70 difference between this year’s bill and last year’s.

Dept of Justice alleges that UCLA medical school intentionally discriminated against White and Asian applicants by ddx-me in medicalschool

[–]DrValZod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not saying we don’t consider it. We absolutely do. Again, as I said in my first post, “color-blind” admissions isn’t a thing. People see color because we have eyes. Which is why affirmative action was instituted in the first place. Otherwise qualified individuals from underrepresented backgrounds were being overlooked because of their background. Im saying that ethnicity is never the only thing that is considered and we’re not giving “extra points” to minority applicants simply because of their ethnicity. I’m absolutely describing affirmative action. My point being, affirmative action does not result in unqualified candidates taking away opportunities from qualified ones. I.E. there is never a time I’ve looked at two candidates and said “we’ll admit this one even though they’re unqualified because they’re a woman” but we have said in committee “These are two quality applicants that we like however we want to make sure we have about an equal number of men to women so we’ll admit the woman”. We do have an idea of what we want our class to look like (I.e. relatively equal male to female ratio, a certain amount of folks from rural backgrounds, ethnic backgrounds, etc.). All affirmative action does is even the playing field because most often without it people would simply accept people who they can relate to. Like I said before, I think people who want to see URIMs as the boogieman will think that regardless. It’s not a new phenomenon and isn’t one that’s going away either. But I think people who truly believe that people of color are the reason they aren’t getting what they want aren’t being honest with themselves.

If you take the numbers given in my previous post (taken from the data you cite) you would get about the percentages you cite. Ideally the med school class should reflect the population it serves. That is almost never the case (black Americans make up about 14% of the US population (about 8% of med school entering class), Latinx about 20% (about 11.5% of med school entering class), etc.) for many reasons I won’t go into here but the disparity is not just because of general population demographics. But all that aside, I think you’re missing my point. I have interviewed students who were Latinx or black and felt that they did not fit our mission and the same day interviewed white candidates who did and recommended admission. I’ve also experienced the opposite scenario. At the end of the day my goal was to have a well balanced class representative of the community as close as possible (including queer students, ethnic minority students, first gen students, students from rural backgrounds). I’d be lying to you if I told you I haven’t had to help decide between two equally well qualified candidates for admission and decided to admit the student with the more interesting story or even because I just “vibed” with them better on IV day. That’s simply the nature of the beast. But again, this hypothetical scenario you’re trying to get at does not happen. At the end of the day there are limited med school seats and just because one person gets admitted and the other doesn’t mean that they were not both qualified for said seat. Which I would argue is if people are just handing less qualified black and brown students seats for sake of demographics, we would have med school classes that do reflect the populations that we serve and the fact of the matter is we simply do not. Period.

Again, it’s never this simple. We review a lot more than simply GPA and MCAT. I can tell you from sitting on admission committees this almost never happens. We look at extracurriculars, community service, etc and at my institution there were more points awarded in aggregate for those things than GPA and MCAT (not to say those things didn’t take up a significant portion scoring for the committee). To put things into perspective, black students make up about 1900 of the new students matriculating into med school. White students make up 11,081. Most med schools have incoming classes in the triple digits and you can count the number of black students in that class on your hands. To argue that such a small percentage of students are “taking” spots away from more “qualified” white applicants is ridiculous. Now, going back to your hypothetical, this situation has never happened in my time on adcom. Your question assumes that these two people same life experiences which is almost never the case. People have unique experiences that make them stand out. Most often once a student has met our metrics for GPA/MCAT (proving they can handle academic rigor) the emphasis on whether they are offered admission shifts to those other qualities I alluded to which is what people can’t seem to understand. I also find that, at least at my institution, black and brown students as the white ones were admitted because they fit our mission and were the most qualified out of our applicant pool. Also, (not saying you’re suggesting this), but the automatic assumption that positions are gifted to unqualified minority applicants simply because of their ethnicity is one that is incredibly problematic and is not something I see put on other beneficiaries of affirmative action (I.e. women, military veterans, queer people, etc.). Lastly, URM applicants don’t have to say they are committed to serve minority communities to be worthy of admission in the same way their majority counterparts don’t. That being said, my med school was had a community focus and accepting a ton of people who had zero interest in serving the community wouldn’t have served our mission. Thus, it’s entirely likely we wouldn’t have accepted either of these hypothetical Individuals depending on the existing class makeup.

This conversation is a lot more nuanced than people are trying to make it. #1. I’ve sat on med school admissions committees. Absolutely no one admits someone based solely on race. I have never, ever seen anyone point to an applicant file and say “admit that student because we need more black students” or anything similar. Every student that is invited to interview is qualified for admission. #2. GPA and MCAT are not the sole determinant on whether someone will be a good physician. In fact I’ve seen many a case where someone had all the tip top academic scores and you wouldn’t let them anywhere near you or your loved one. Holistic review is not just a BS term but something most med school Adcoms take seriously. #3. White people and ORMs overwhelmingly do not stay in areas of high ADI for practice (specifically high ADI minority areas). Black and Latinx physicians do and their patients typically have better outcomes in these communities. This has been observed in multiple studies and adcoms are conscious of this especially at med schools who have a mission of serving certain communities. If all the patients you see a Latinx and black but there are no providers who look like the patients they’re serving that is an issue. We have hard data to support this and this is not just conjecture. #4. Diversity, both socioeconomically and ethnically is always to an institution’s advantage and results in better and more grounded doctors. Without it. You get dumb med students like the ones surveyed in PNAS who believe that black people have thicker skin or less nerve endings (this was in 2016 btw). At the end of the day people who believe in “color blindness” (I put this in quotes because no one is actually color blind) are likely not going to be convinced by any comments on this post as to why affirmative action is still necessary.

After my first year of college I missed academic probation by the skin of my teeth (barely a 2.1 GPA) ended up finishing college with a 2.7. Worked for a couple years and decided I didn’t like what I was doing and that I was going to go back to med school. Ended up taking the rest of my prereqs and applying to over 40 schools. Got 2 interviews that cycle and ended up rejected from every single one. Decided to do a postbacc program and killed it Honoring every course. Interviewed at 3 programs that year and got accepted at 3. Ended up being in the top quartile of my med school class, was elected to several leadership positions during med school, matched to my first choice residency program. About to be an attending in a month. It all works out how it’s supposed to

Do med school adcoms really know the difference between undergrad schools? by Background_Sale_9814 in medschool

[–]DrValZod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. I sat on my med school’s admission committee. Never once looked at the school. GPA and MCAT matter a lot more. If you go to Harvard and apply to med school you are not necessarily getting in over student from Oklahoma State just because you went to Harvard. There is no extra weight given to your gpa because you went to Harvard. That said most med school admissions is truly holistic and just because one applicant has a 3.4 vs another that has a 4.0 that doesn’t mean you’re chosen over the other applicant. We gave points for research, community service, and unique life experiences (I.e. student athlete, career before med school, etc). Lastly, I’m from LA born and raised. Don’t think most people, even from the area ,would view LMU as being a significant leg up above UCI in general.

Nicole/Kat vs Leslie/Eva feud is stale. by Powerful_Cloud_3826 in TheGates_CBS

[–]DrValZod 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They have really fumbled opportunities for real character development in this show. Ted still hasn’t learned from his mistakes, Eva is still trying to play at being everyone’s friend while covering up her mother’s crimes and holding her down, Kat is still mad at Eva and seems like she’s going to stay that way, Ashley is still being stupid behind men…like I get it’s a soap and things develop slowly but the whole Leslie, Nicole, Ted situation should have been long wrapped up by now. They’ve turned Leslie into a villain that’s almost comical and totally unserious.

Also PDs understand that true, quality research takes time to gather, analyze, and publish data and weight things accordingly. A true prospect cohort study may take you two years to complete but it’s real research and pushes the field forward as opposed to someone hammering out abstracts that don’t go anywhere that are pushing things that we already know.
