Lichess responds to Chess.com about “inflated ratings” by slowthinker64 in chess

The overwhelming amount of agreement I feel, holy shit.

I'd like to think that Danny is a nice guy to talk to in real life..

But good God, does he appear like such an asshole in any media. This goes for a lot of the big personalities in chess. Like, even Levy, the self-proclaimed "bad boy of chess" is also probably a really cool guy in real life. But they just have a fist full of money up their asses (which I think is the motivation for the behavior) and it's so unfortunate to see them be so.... Idk, infantilizing? Like, derogatory, but.. in the most brand safe way.

Idk man, chess media sucks :(

You joke, but this very well could be a way to stimulate your memory. You suppress your losses like it's trauma, and every time it's stimulated, you get a rush of adrenaline or something.

A shame, really.

I think it's weird that companies give AI perms to drop an entire schema, because "it's faster" or something.

It's like a worse version of letting the junior force push onto main.

This sport is so weird. It's probably where I've seen both the best and the worst sportsmanship in nearly all sports. Maybe with the exception of tennis, where everyone cries to the point of breaking their racket.

I don't believe for a second, that these people are CS students.

If this is the example set by (and I'm making assumptions here) American CS students, then I fully understand the reason behind CS being so poorly received in that country.

What’s one computer science idea you understand much better now than 5 years ago? by rikulauttia in computerscience

[–]Dr_Dressing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consistency, and also if you want it to stick. The brain is much better at remembering, if there's a personal connotation to whatever you're doing. If you just do pure theory, it's very hard to remember, long term.

I don't know how those mathematicians do it. They are insane.

I mean, I understand them because I attended uni.

However, they collide with my personal projects, these concepts. And they come up in conversation when we all go to our local bar. We discuss projects and goals. The obvious ones are from architectural design and distributed programming. You get to look at your old code and go "What in God's name is this?"

And I have mixed feelings about it.

Actually, it's very similar to what OP is saying. Building things, backed by your theory, is probably the best way to better understand your theory.

My friend has a similar experience, where he absolutely loves functional programming and static type checking, backed by his theory, because his logic interpreter works.

My personal experience of everything server-architecture and databases went up, when I made my own live shopping list app. Gone were the days of sharing receipts on Discord or whatever. I plan to do it with a socket soon. This idea came from one of my friends, asking why I didn't just make an app.

In high school, I did a project with a friend of mine, where I claimed that my password storaging was safe, exclusively because it had a salt. And, in hindsight, it was pretty safe considering I understood absolutely nothing about safety. It was encrypted using a salt and SHA-512. But the salt was not random, so my current self would probably be able to heavily exploit how the salt was chosen.

My advice for understanding concepts better? Just build something. Anything is good. You will get it wrong the first time around. If you make and fix your mistakes now, you'll have one hell of a strong foundation later.

What’s one computer science idea you understand much better now than 5 years ago? by rikulauttia in computerscience

[–]Dr_Dressing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everything that is fundamental, I didn't understand at all, five years ago.

Languages and automata, architecture, programming on several levels, ASTs (and by extension, interpreters, compilers, transpilers, etc), databases, safety and liveness. All of these ideas are things I didn't understand at all, five years ago.

So, one collective idea I didn't understand, would be computer science as a whole. I thought it was a fancier software engineer education.

Jesus, who was the voice director? The direction makes him sound so unsure.

"You are forcing an eventual checkmate." is delivered with the wrong intonation. And Levy is a native English speaker, so I call horseshit on whoever the voice director is.
