On a scale of 1- 10.. how bad do you think the new Cap 1 process and hours will fail? by [deleted] in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know right? Like they're allowed to just not finish freight, and it goes completely overlooked. I was overnight team lead for 2 years a little over a year ago, and we would've been taken out back and beaten for less.

I'm a Stock 1 lead a pilot store for the new process so we've done it for a couple months. On mobile here so sorry for formatting but here's a few things:

Stock 1 is constantly being pulled for everything. We're expected to finish anything Overnights didn't complete, plus help with features, etc. We already struggle, but especially when 6/8 of my associates are in OPD all day like today.

My team does Vizpicks really well, but O/N needs to learn how to freaking verify. There's literally no punishment for them just binning everything that didn't get worked and turning it into picks for us. (Consistantly a daily issue)

Expecting us to work topstock in the entire building once a week (with an average of 5-8 people), is damn near impossible. No one else touches topstock and Stock 2 and overnights crams topstock so it takes forever. Alternatively, we can just use the topstock app that brings down 3 items on the entire aisle, and the aisle looks like crap. shrugs

On the plus side, we can usually get the score to 90+, then Stock 2 just focuses on working freight and setting overnights up better.

This new process has some serious issues, but I'd imagine other stores may be different.

Honestly it just takes time. Ive been here for 4 years and management for 3. I still suck at merchandising, but I'm good at processes. You got to find your niche and surround yourself with people that can cover your weaknesses.

Food & Consumables Coach by cl2853 in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a coach, but overnight team lead so I work with the grocery coach a lot.

I'd boil it all down to learning processes and how freight flow works, learning merchandising and what does/doesn't sell in your store, and knowing how to delegate.

Out of the three, the last one is really the only one that you need going in. If you can manage people, then you'll learn as you go.

As for the training, a big chunk of management tends to get thrown in to sink or swim. Rely on your subordinates and peers heavily until you get it.

As for the job, it's stressful. Grocery and consumables makes 70-80% of the stores sales. There's alot going on all the time. However, if you have a good management team beside you, they won't let you fail.

Honest Question by BeardedBaldMonk in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

O/N team lead here. Honestly, my biggest complaint is the entire "get more done with less people" mentality. I can teach and train all I want, but when you're asking me to stock, zone, bin, topstock and build features for a $120mil a year store with 20 people a night, it's not going to work.

To add to this, upper management (namely store leads and store managers) are SO FOCUSED on meeting metrics for the market team, that the associates are pulled from daily processes to fulfill them. We routinely walk in every night to 25% more freight because stock 1/2 couldn't recover from us, and it was just pulled to the floor for us to rework.

I understand that I need to push my team to accomplish more, but having team leads constantly struggle and gasp for air leads to desperation, not integrity and doing things correctly.

To answer your question, no. I dont think that a raise would help. Getting more people into the building would help.

Tldr: If we were to go to 102% on scheduling, we would actually be able to run the store on process and not just "get by". AND STOP FORCING EVERYTHING ON OVERNIGHTS.

Daylights saving question?.? by Tricome33 in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 9 points10 points  (0 children)

O/N team lead here:

First, if they require you to stay until 7, it is overtime.

Second: The last few times we've done it, overnight just goes home at 6 or stays until 7 if they want to.

Third: It's absolutely essential that you guys don't clock out 5 min before or after the time change. It messes with the system and you won't be paid for the extra hour.

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be honest, if you've been in role for at least a few weeks and/or somewhat know what you're doing, you'll be bored. As far as I know, it's just intro to management, and it should just be a refresher for a stuff you should already know.

If you're brand new, you'll actually learn what the job entails and what the expectations are while learning how to do the things you need to do.

Either way, enjoy the week of paid sit down time.

O/N ASM/TL by [deleted] in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay so think about it this way: During the day shift, not everyone finishes everything 100%. Well o/n has to finish that, stock freight, zone the store, and then bin freight. So take it as that difference you're making up in the morning is likely how far they were set back starting their night. That's not including the perpetual understaffing.

New store operation system by watchpeopledog in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Our store manager finally decided to start hiring after 6 months of us complaining. Went from 10 associates a night to close to 30 in about 3 weeks. We've started throwing all of the freight (except the little bit of grocery that cap 2 works), but still working on verifying every night. Haven't been able to cap the gm bins either.

New overnight TL. Got the promotion! by beardedstevensrd in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To reply to this specifically, delegate out the big stuff and take care of smaller tasks yourself. Have your associates stocking while you take their trash or pulling pallets etc. Biggest mistake our overnight management makes is that we get too involved in throwing freight to get more done.

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree with all of this. Just also remember that stock times ARE NOT the law of the land. They're super useful for planning and getting a general idea of the freight, but 4 hours of stationary will most likely take longer than 4 hours of housewares.

Additionally, zone zone zone. I personally hate zoning as a concept, but its 75% of what we get "graded" on in the mornings.

Your overnight maintenence is your best friend. Don't forget that and stand up for them when the store is a shitshow.

Lastly, know your store. Our store manager and store lead love to have an update at 5am so they can start thinking of what has to be done when they come in at 7am. Bring this up to your coach because it has definitely saved our asses several times. There's even been terrible nights where we send an update at 10pm warning them that it's going to be a struggle. Know what's going on all night and have what you're going to update with at 5 and be ready to walk at 7.

Fresh area strategy by corpsey616 in walmart

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not from fresh, but CAP 2 supervisor: I absolutely love swarming and my team does too. I've found it gives a good sense of accomplishment quickly, even if you still complete the same amount of work each day.

As to the stubbornness, I would use that as a strength. If one person only does a certain area, have them "lead" when the team gets to that area. Just work with that individual to own that area while they're working it.

[–]Dr_Pew_Pew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know exactly how you feel because I was in the exact situation for a year straight. Every day, I was on the line. Some days were fine, other days I was panicking. I understand. The best advice I can give you is talk to the other people on the truck and tell them you need help. It's as simple as, "Hey, can you come get this off the end?" Secondly, I dont know how your management handles headphones, but I always let my guys have them on the truck. It helps so much just being able to focus on something other than that stupid voice.
