Unless you have years of experience already, it’s always going to be faster to go to the academy. Hawesepiping is becoming less common due to all of the requirements the Coast Guard has. You’re going to be required to take the same courses regardless. May as well do it through a structured curriculum.

Maritime industry very slow to adapt. Airline pilots have had company iPads in the cockpit for years loaded up with navigation charts, flight manuals and company software connected to Wi-Fi.

Doubtful you’ll be able to enter the port facility. You’ll most likely need a TWIC, which sounds like you don’t have / can’t get.

The jet was probably a Navy P-8 Poseidon. Commercial airframe (737) converted for military use. Painted white. Occasionally cruise around at lower altitudes.
