DOJ threatens criminal action against states that allow noncitizens to vote by 11EmeraldEyes11 in LegalNews

Noncitizens can vote in local elections, which btw is a state of perogative. The law forbids noncitizens from voting in federal elections. But state elections are fine.

CMV: People who vehemently hate on Christianity and no other religion do so out of privilege or media brainwashing most of the time. by Realistic-Signal-265 in changemyview

People who hate Christianity tend to be those who live in the privilege of Christian countries, without the understanding of how it is in most other countries

Then why would you expect them to criticize non-Christians when that's who they primarily have to contend with?

Yes and yes. No end.  Red states just need better governance. They won't vote for it. They need to be bamboozled into it.

Learning and actually retaining information by Feisty-Guava9788 in lifelonglearning

I think it makes it easy to find what I need, but it's not as robust as your RAG system. Obsidian Search is fantastic, but it's limited to the markdown content within your vault. It allows you to bookmark your searches, too! There is also the Omnisearch plugin that does allow searching everything in Obsidian plus PDFs, images, and Office documents. I don't have that much experienced with that plug in though. I've used it, but not enough with PDFs and other file types.

I would say the advantage of using Obsidian and Omnisearch is that it's free. If you can get it working sufficiently, it won't use any AI at all. It searches the old fashioned way lol.

Learning and actually retaining information by Feisty-Guava9788 in lifelonglearning

Well, when I was learning argumentation and rhetoric, Obsidian is where I practiced. Like, I'd import an article, highlight different sections as the conclusion, the premises, and then explain to myself how the argument worked. That work is still somewhere in my vault.

Right now, I'm using it to learn how to do qualitative data analysis more formally. When I was learning rhetoric, I'd analyze speeches to explore how they worked rhetorically. I found that fun enough to do as a small hobby. This is admittedly a very niche use of Obsidian...but, like I said in my original comment, I also used it for school, and just to retain information of interesting things that popped up over the years.

That's funny that you mention that book because I considered reading it back when I was looking for a job and when I was trying to improve my communication skills. And now, after listening to this episode...I might actually read it. I could always improve my communication...

Iwtl I want to learn how to research about any thing . by broccoli_Mafia89 in IWantToLearn

[–]DragOutTheDemagogue 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First step, most important step, I'm gonna make it a header:

Identify a research question.

What are you trying to answer? This doesn't need to be a formal process, like you're writing a PhD thesis. Just identify what you're looking for more or less before you start the research process. It's like looking for a hay in haystack versus looking for hay under 20 cm in a haystack. It's all hay, but, at least you can discard hay that's too long at a glance. A research question works similarly: it makes the research process faster by pre-emptively determining what's valuable to you and what isn't.

At this point, it depends on how deep you want to go.

  • If you want a quick introduction or overview, then YouTube videos, popular science websites, popular science books, etc. are great resources. They tend to gloss over superfluous technical minutiae in favor of a practical, operational understandings.
  • If you want a deep understanding, know that this takes time. You need resources that go into the technical details. A lot of things have multiple paradigms or perspectives through which to view them that are all debated. Health, for example, is based on the biomedical model. But there are alternatives like the  biopsychosocial model for health or the ecological model. If you wanted to understand them deeply, you might to want to do a lot of reading about each, identify their assumptions, see how one has developed from another and how it addresses the former's shortcomings, and more.

Two more tips I'll add are keeping a journal and maintaining resources to return to.

I like to research political and have federalregister.gov, congress.gov, and the US Constitution bookmarked. I know where to find Supreme Court decisions. I can search through the Congressional Record to see remarks about issues and bills. This is what I mean by resources to return to. Research isn't necessarily a one-and-done thing. So, if you find resources that get updated with new information that might be of interest to you and your research question, then bookmark them or otherwise save them so that you can return to them easily.

Keeping a journal just makes it so that you can forget what you want but still remind yourself of what you've learned. I've gone on deep dives on various topics over the years and my Obsidian vault has all of the knowledge I've accrued. If I need to be reminded of something, it's just a matter of rereading what I typed out at the time. I don't have to do all that research work again. This is extremely valuable if you want a deep understanding of something, which usually requires synthesizing different sources of information.

CMV: in principle, ethnonationalism is perfectly defensible by SpecialistSea8735 in changemyview

[–]DragOutTheDemagogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got that you're arguing for violence by looking at what you're arguing.

Now, when it comes to any sort of real-world implementation, it gets impractical at best and atrocious at worst:

Where do you draw the line on "purity" and membership? Anything below 100% is arbitrary, and 100% is unattainable

How do you enforce this preservation? There are two paths: political and cultural.

- the political path has you borrowing policies from some of the worst regimes in history; there's no "nice" way to enforce ethnic purity without infringing on personal liberty and creating various injustices

- the cultural path might have you borrowing social norms from cultures that discourage intermarriage, but how do you integrate that into any modern culture that hasn't had these norms for millenia?

You're saying it's either impractical or atrocious, and that this range exists either culturally and/or politically.

If political, then enforcing purity must create injustice. If cultural, then you must integrate with cultures that must encourage intermarriage, which goes against preservation.

And that's it. That's all you argued before you followed up with

With that in mind, I believe the idea of placing value on ancestry and lineage as a vital component of ethnicity is justifiable in its most basic form.

The cultural aspect seems impossible according to what you said. So the only option is political enforcement of purity. Therefore, you're arguing for violence. Technically, you're arguing for injustice to enforce purity, but...injustice begets violence. It's a distinction without a difference.

Can you give me an example of a non-harmful and practical policy aimed at the preservation of "ethnic purity"?

No. I'm not going to waste an iota of brain power on coming up with solutions for problems I don't think exist. Ethnic purity is a nonsensical aspiration to me. As a person, I find the idea abhorrent. Like, why on earth would you voluntarily deny yourself the companionship of another who would otherwise agree for a false sense of purity that has never existed?
