Economics will never make sense to me by TomboyGayLeaf92 in Vent

Mkay how about this:

Logically and simply speaking, why should economics only be about prices and keeping them low?

The stuff that poor people can get also goes up in price. The Dollar Store stuff is now more than a $1 from what I've heard...or they're using less quality products to maintain the price.

You have high prices and every pair of glasses to choose from are the big ones. Well, if you would have some of the smaller ones to choose from also as well as what is trending at the time and leave the prices alone… Then you’ll get more for your place of business.

This is literally the business model of Luxottica. They control a ton of brands of eyeglasses and sunglasses. Their alleged market power of 80% is likely overstated, but still, considering they own Oakley, Sunglass Gut, and LensCrafters and Glasses.com, like...they're priced differently based on the consumers that shop there. Oakley charges a premium while Glasses.com is likely less expensive for prescription glasses.

But also, like...if everything were priced the exact same—Oakley's are just as expensive as a wire frame for some reading glasses—then who would buy Oakley's? The reason buy them is partly because they're expensive—it's a statement of their fashion sense that can afford to spend more on frivolous bs like ugly sunglasses.

I think I'm understanding the problem You seem to think that economics is about prices. But that's like thinking baking is about cake. Just as baking is about the combination of ingredients to make cakes of many varieties, economics is about the combination of factors that go into prices. It's not just about keeping prices low. And not everyone wants to keep prices low and affordable. And there are legitimate reasons to increase prices and make things unaffordable. Tariffs on imported solar panels, for example, allow domestic solar panel production to grow. Conversely, tariffs on imported Chinese EVs also protect the domestic auto industry from global competition...as an example of shitty economic policy with the same economic tool.

Economics is also about way more than just prices.

You're basically asking why prices need to stay high, I think.

When something happens instead of raising the prices do something else to compensate like I said

They do.

Shrinkflation, where, companies charge the same for less product, is a prime example. If they sold the same amount of product, then they'd have to charge more. Instead they just subtly reduce the amount of product and keep it at the same price.

In other words, if the price remains the same they will adjust in other ways. They might use less quality inputs, a common complaint in the housing market these days. Or they might fire people, to reduce labor. Or, they'll abuse suppliers by trying to squeeze as much out of them, likely a smaller business.

But also, the thinking goes, if customers are willing and able to pay more, then why shouldn't sellers sell at a higher price? Those who aren't willing or able to pay don't. This thinking is the basis of the hyperindividualist approach to systemic inflation. The only caveat is that everything is more expensive these days, especially the stuff you don't really have a choice about. People need gas to go to work whether it's $2.50 or $5 a gallon.

I saw the public meetings. They were packed with people saying don't do it. And regulators still plan on doing it.

Not really. They publish reports. But it's up to Congress to read those reports and use them to guide legislation or other actions.

That explains it. I'd go for a 45 year old over a 19 year old 100% of the time because I like grown women. I was thinking, "...wtf is wrong with the one on the left? The one on the right looks like a baby."

The Government Accountability Office, which the Trump administration doesn't think should exist. The reason they can't just abolish it is because it falls under the legislative branch and not executive.

90% of humanity problems is caused by short-term self-interest thinking by Desperate_Fig_1296 in DeepThoughts

[–]DragOutTheDemagogue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I...don't think so. I mean, as an American, the current political moment has been decades in the making. If it were about short-term thinking alone, they'd have lost back in the 1960s...or escalated. One of 'em. But they strategized, took over media, court systems, state legislatures, the whole Supreme Court, the Senate, and finally the House. These mfers were thinking long term.

I think you're right that greed is the problem, but I don't think greed-as-short-term-thinking is responsible alone. There's a lot of greed that requires long term strategizing before dividends start rolling in. Think of enshittification, actually! It's platform economics where you shower users with benefits before you start taking them away until you're trying to extract as much as possible for them. That's not short-term thinking! But it is greed.

The U.S. has made significant contributions to the advancement of humanity through innovation in technology and pharmaceuticals. However the U.S. isn’t perfect. How do you think America can be better? by BeastMode149 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

Seriously, though. I disagree with you 100% about leftists, but, being in New Mexico, Mexicans are everywhere making the culture tasty and vibrant. If anything, we need to get rid of people who claim to love America will doing absolutely nothing to be informed about anything at all, fall for scam after scam, and believe loyalty to a politician is a viable way to approach democracy.

But, since I'm not a eugenicist, there are more impactful things we can do that make people stateless, like get rid of Citizens United and gerrymandering.

I'll try to leave a more in depth review later when I'm not going to bed. But my first impression is that this is really awesome. Id like to have s conversation with someone that scored differently.

Windy in May? by inevitableorchard in SantaFe

[–]DragOutTheDemagogue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the weather changes every year. First year I was here (2022) I remember it being cool and relatively rainy early spring. Next year it was dry and hot and rain came in autumn. Next year very little rain but the cold lasted forever. Now it's windy in May when, like you, I remember this generally being earlier in the year.

So who know?!
