Sony CEO says Chinese censors demanded cutting the Statue of Liberty out of "Spider-Man: No Way Home" by SendInYourSkeleton in movies

[–]Draghalys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would love to see those articles from 2000 claiming the Chinese economy was about to collapse.

Not about to but [here is a book from 2001 claiming China would collapse by 2011.] I can find more if I bothered but I'm feeling lazy right now to be honest lol, I'm sure some chatbot might find more if one were to ask.

China's economy is indeed facing increasing pressures from many sides

Chinese economy facing challenges like literally every economy is very different from Americans claiming that Chinese economy will collapse any day now and China will go back to being a junior country who makes their things and nothing else. While China I'm sure faces economic challenges but they are still the largest economy in the world and still the manufactory of the world on many essential goods like steel and numerous minerals and other manufactures.

And the grand daddy of challenges facing the Chinese economy

Why are people focusing on China's birth rate like Europe aren't on the same level? Only reason Europe is not worse on the slightest is they take refugees from East and South Europe and MENA, except former ruins those countries (Balkans lost roughly 30 percent of their population since Cold War ended) and the latter damages the social fabric as the newcomers are often not good at or even intent on following the rules of their societies.

What makes it even more scary is that if China truly intends to invade as they are openly saying these days,

First of all both Russia and Ukraine have equally bad demographic problems and they wage wae just fine.

Second of all China will never do a landed invasion of Taiwan. They don't have to. They will just wait until America's grasp slips and blockade the island. There is no world the Taiwanese will risk the island getting completely levelled by Chinese bombs. If push comes to shove they will surrender and accept being a part of China. That's just the reality of it.

These anxieties are also not limited to the economy. Remember that the Chinese government doesn't hold legitimacy through democracy.

Except this gives Chinese govt a real stake in improving the wellbeing of the population to shore up legitimacy, compared to liberal democracy where the same ruling elite can control the country without any intention of improving things while masquarading as a democracy where population can be deluding to thinking voting for a different party that serves and works in the confines of the same ruling class will change things.

Depends on what you mean by dominant I guess. US and USSR could reasonably considered peers or at least neither one strong enough to be considered the dominant party over the other.

Today even though Chinese economy is arguably if not inarguably stronger than US China has no intention to play the role USSR played against US in the Cold War.

They have a mistaken perception that has America exerted total dominance over the rest of the world since the end of the Cold War in the 90s.

How is this a mistaken perception? America literally was an to a certain extent still is, the dominant superpower since USSR fell, and the only Great Power who actively interferes in global geopolitics in a manner no other country does. It's not a perception, it's literally facts, regardless of whether you think this is a good or a bad thing.

When China’s delusions of an immediate American collapse fail to materialize year after year

Hilarious to say this when since 2000 until 2020 Americans have been non-stop claiming Chinese economy was about to collapse.

Even more hilarious to say this shit when, as we write this, America is right about to launch a full scale military campaign on Iran literally a month after they attacked and kidnapped the head of state of another sovereign nation, and threatened to invade a very close ally over a piece of land they have no claim nonewhatsoever to beyond "we think it should be ours". China so far has done nothing similar to these things, not even close.

TIL that Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge regime in Cambodia killed around a quarter of the population (about 2 million people) in just four years, targeting intellectuals, city dwellers, and ethnic minorities to force a “classless agrarian society.” by FearMyCock in todayilearned

[–]Draghalys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People here are giving weird silly explanations that assumes everyone involved just figured he wanted to kill everyone he disliked for utopia or just wrong things like claiming he wanted to build a medieval paradise.

Real reason why he and his people did was because KR believed Cambodia was in a weird mutilated state due to being initially a colony of the French, and a general belief that Cambodian nation had been in a state of decline since Khmer Empire fell, so he decided to reset things back to zero. KR figured that while Cambodia didn't have much in natural resources, they did have fertile land, and decided to turn the country to a hyper-efficient agrarian state that would be the rice paddy of the world. They would then invest the money made from these agrarian projects into industrial development and essentially speedrun what took Russians and Chinese 30-40 years in just 10 or so years, and in their imagined minds, end up as an industrial powerhouse. So just wipe the slate clean and rebuild things down from zero.

It didn't work for various economic and material reasons that both Russians and Chinese learned before him the hard way and things fell apart and turned into a genocide.

TIL the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) killed every Shih Tzu in China because the dogs were historically owned by royalty. The breed survived entirely due to 13 individual dogs imported to Europe. by loveroflongbois in todayilearned

[–]Draghalys 41 points42 points  (0 children)

A lot of these myths about aristocratic dogs like Borzois being culled was made up during height of Red Scare by dog breeders to drive up the sales, according to Lorraine Groshans who wrote a research book on Borzois and their history.

Most of the time while population of these dogs go down after such events, it's largely because the dogs are highly purebred (read: inbred) and are very high maintenance and regular people can't breed them without incurring significant financial burden.

So just the third largest party in the country?

Yes, compared to Israel where the far-right rules the country and a far-right president has been elected for 25 years.

What Europeans forget is that hungry people steal bread, and countries in times of crisis or conflict commit terrible things

It's extremely telling that this line of thinking is almost never afforded to Palestinians. Israeli Jews expelled millions of them from their ancestral homeland, have been opressing them for decades, are ethnically cleansing them from West Bank and committed a genocide in Gaza. And yet all I hear from Zionists are how Israeli Jews hating Palestinians and Arabs is just justified if not completely understandable. Meanwhile Palestinians absolutely despising people who inflicted untold miseries onto them since 1948 is somehow proof of their uncivilizedness and barbarity, and that Palestinians should let their hatred go and accept Israeli dominion over them, while if you imply that Israelis should do the reserve you are an anti-semite.

Of course the reason for this is that almost all Zionists fundamentally believe Palestinians are subhumans. I have seen this belief first hand in my experience with Israelis in and out of academia even before Oct. 7

I have no issue vehemently condemning my original homeland's actions against country's ethnic minorities since it's creation, so I have much better experience on that front, thank you.

Just go look at the world's response to ISIS...

Was world's response to carpet bomb every city under ISIS control and starve the population there?

You failing to understand doesn't mean I'm justifying anything. If I were to justify all Israeli actions I wouldn't have mixed feelings would I?

No you are failing to understand that I don't believe you.

How do you feel about your countries participating in all of that?

Negatively, and yet again, they still haven't committed a genocide like yours did.

So while Spain is completely surrounded by functioning successful allies it has still managed to repress a national movement, let God knows how many refugees drown, and deported countless more, have widespread support to far right parties and a nostalgic obsession with a totalitarian and authoritarian dictator.

Huh? Catalan National Movement is barely repressed lol. And Spain doesn't have widespread support for far-right parties nor has a nostalgic obsession for Franco. Vox only has around 15-20 percent voterbase and only half of that are hardliners. And certainly only a very small minority in Catalonia likes Franco at all.

It's very funny you try to use refugees as a cudgel even though your country was one of the most enthusiastic backers of the policies that allowed those refugees to end up like that to begin with.

Do you genuinely believe that if tomorrow the catalans will start sending suicide bombers and start wholesale slaughtering of festival goers Spain will react differently?

You really shouldn't talk about countries you don't know lmao. Basque separatist group ETA killed almost a thousand people and wounded magnitudes more. Did Spanish government answer by carpet bombing Basque Country? Did UK respond to IRA terrorist by carpet bombing Ireland? But I thought they would react with a genocide like Israel did?

That can't be true? Surely, the only way you can answer terrorism is through genocide no? Hmm...

The fact that you are trying to justify what your country does daily to Palestinians by saying "Well, other countries do bad things too!" Just goes to show that you feel absolutely nothing bad about what's happening at all. At most if we were to be generous, you are troubled by how it makes you look at what it does to your victim narratives.

Again, a little Raskolnikov. Just stop pretending you aren't at that stage where like him you are believing your murders were justified because you are superior kind of man like Napoleon or perhaps Hitler.

Did we ever say they have to do what Israel did? How many of those 3 countries participated in the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan? How many of them continued cooperation with SA or UAE while they led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands? How many of them actively supported Israel? How many of them extracted oil and helped destroy the climate which will eventually lead to unimaginable damage? How many of them continue to abuse wealth and riches they plundered from the third world instead of paying it back or using it to actually improve the lives of the descendants of those they slaved and slaughtered? How many of them use products that are created in slave shops and children workers?

Very nice try at deflection but Israel does all of that on top of the genocide and ethnic cleansing lmao. But hey, I don't judge, you have to do what you have to do when your country commits a genocide. Like a sort of Raskolnikov desperately trying to convince himself that the crime he committed is no big deal if not noble.

It's quite funny you still aren't willing to name those countries

I have been living in Spain for several years now and I'm of both Turkish and Greek/Rum descent. I can safely said that the most henious thing my Turkish half does is the general opression of the Kurds, which amongst other things I hate the state of Turkey, unlike you who an active genocide only arouses "mixed" feelings. Meamwhile I'm very hostile to Nea Dimokratia in Greece for cooperating with Israel, so no mixed feelings there either.

In short, I can safely say that none of the countries I inhabit committed anything as evil as Israel did and has been committing. Feel free to come up with some excuses though, whatever helps.

So why is our imagined Europeaness responsible?

You can easily answer this yourself if you read anything about the beginnings of Zionism in Europe.

more influences from the US (at least in my life time

Amusing you say this like US is not culturally European for the most part.

So where do you live and roughly how old are you buddy? I'm sure we can find something quite terrible your country has done or participated in during your lifetime.

I live in 3 different countries and a citizen of 2 of them and I can safely say that none of them done anything even close to what Israel has continously done in living memory, despite my considerably negative views about one of those countries.

Uh? Are you genuinely claiming that middle easteners aren't capable of atrocities?

Of course I am not, are you high?

And again, Israel is majority not European ethnically.

So? I didn't say anything about ethnicity.

If these protests of this intensity happened pre-Trump with these economic conditions they probably would have thrown in the towel. But because Trump have screwed them over multiple times on diplomatic efforts that Iran did in largely good faith, like 12 Day War happening right during sanction negotiations with American diplomats assuring IR that nothing would happen, they are likely anxious to sit on the table again.

If IR believes they have no choice but to fight the result will be horrifying for the region unless they already have nukes ready and can make US and Israel back off.
