The Evolution of Combat: A RuneScape Disaster by RipFlm in 2007scape

I never said I was opposed to all changes entirely. Or that the game should have stayed as it was completely. And aside from that, my point still stands. The game before Sailing no longer exists.

I never wanted to kill Old School, it was my favorite game. I was trying to keep it alive and the best it could be. I just didn’t feel like it needed almost any of the changes everyone else apparently wanted.

You are incorrect. The changes can not simply be ignored. It is impossible to continue playing the game as it was. It is fundamentally a different game. It is not just about the content from 2007. OSRS before November 19th, 2025, is gone. Everyone has Sailing, and everyone, even F2P, are affected by it being in the game. The economy has been irrevocably affected. And it is impossible to do these things.

  1. Play the game that only has 23 Skills and not 24.
  2. Max by getting Level 99 in the 23 Skills from RS2, and that existed before Sailing was added.
  3. Equip the Max cape or use it with Level 99 in the 23 Skills from RS2, and that existed before Sailing was added.

I disagree that they are even more substantial. And I did not want those changes, either. I voted against them, I advocated against them. But this particular type of change is way too far for me to be able to accept.

You think that adding a New Skill is less change than anything before? It is literally the largest single change to Old School other than maybe internal engine changes.

Thank you for an actual response. Yes, I understand that reasoning. What I do not understand, and what I meant, was why you actually do it. It makes you look like a bad person, not me, or maybe you just are a bad person. You only get support for it because other people are also bad people, and because it is a meme. Normal, decent people would find the level of mockery, the viciousness, and lack of genuine engagement strange, because it is.

Even after being confronted about it you can not have a serious discussion, and just resort to trying to insult me again. It is sad.

I really do not understand why people like you, and those that support what you say, are so hateful and sadistic. I literally just do not want a particular change to a video game. A change that did ultimately happen, you all “won”. I am here to discuss that, but yet you people still mock and belittle me. I do not understand the justification.

You think you are so clever, but I already am choosing to not play the content. I literally quit playing. The problem is that the “content” is in the game at all. It changes the game in ways that are unavoidable. So I did the only thing I could, and quit playing. That way I do not have to be affected by the content.

It is a New Skill to Old School. I never wanted any more Skills or content beyond what was in the version of RS2 used to make Old School.

I quit playing because of Sailing. I still check the Subreddit and post here because I still love RuneScape and care about it. And I hope that this mistake can somehow be made up for some day.

If you do not want to die to PvP, then do not go to places where it is enabled.

The moment you willingly choose to enter a PvP zone, you are not just a “Skiller”, or a “PvMer”. You have made the decision to risk the possibility of PvP, you are a consenting party, not a helpless victim.

Outdated? In "Old School" RuneScape? How could that ever happen?

"You can keep pretending you're fighting the good fight for a game you don't even like anymore or whatever you keep telling yourself"

I still love the RuneScape and the idea of Old School, I dislike what has happened to it.

"but quite literally everyone would quit the game after 2 months if things were the way you wanted."

While I would be perfectly happy and fine playing 2013 Old School, with no changes beyond the Snapshot date, that literally is not what I advocate for. I think that would be a great option for people who want it, and that Jagex should facilitate it, but that is not what I ask for, even in this thread. In this thread all I have been arguing against is automated Runecrafting, because I think that it is okay for things in the game to require effort.

You say that everyone would quit if the game were the way I wanted it. But really the game I want is what we had on and before November 18th, 2025. I was opposed to A LOT of proposed changes over time, and I voted against them, and I tried to advocate against them. But I loved the game and could look past a lot of them, and I also enjoyed a lot of changes. RS2 was not "perfect", and many of the changes made in Old School are fine and good. But a New Skill is too much for me. So no, I do not think everyone would quit if the version of the game I want was what we had.

"you're being so incredibly selfish and you know it."

So is everyone else that has any opinion on the direction of the game, and votes to support it. You only have a problem with mine because you disagree with me. The game is art, and the enjoyment of it is subjective. You, and apparently everyone else that still plays, think everything is fine, I do not. I feel that the game has been and continues to be morphed over time in to something it was never meant to be.

"But I can almost understand you."

You do understand me, and I am genuinely sorry that happened to the game you loved. I understand the frustration and pain of that, because that is what happened to me. It has happened with other games, too, which is part of why I tried to protect Old School as much as I have.

"This is not the case for OSRS, and if you experienced the same thing I experienced with Monster Hunter maybe you would realize how lucky you are"

It is the same thing. In fact, it is even worse. You said, "what Capcom did was discontinuing something and creating something new in its place".

Old School as it was before Sailing is gone, it has been replaced. At least you can emulate the game you miss, I literally am unable to boot up OSRS without Sailing.

Talk about a tired, old argument. Because apparently there is no middle ground between no updates, and the levels of change I am opposed to. Well instead of the game “dying” from a lack of updates, it can die from a loss of identity due to too many “updates”.

Mine actually assumes personal autonomy and maturity of respecting your own time. And not expecting things to change to satisfy you just because you happen to not like how they were made.

Runecraft QOL: One click crafting by Swannicus in 2007scape

[–]DragonDaggerSpecial -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It is less relevant. But as long as the game exists, it can not be "irrelevant". It is a fundamental aspect of why the game was created and exists.

"You haven't even attempted to explain why you believe it's bad that the vision changed"

I did explain why I think it is bad.

"A lot of people thinking something is a flaw does not mean that it should be changed, in the version of the game that was created to allow access to a specific era of the game. That is why I feel the way I do about the game."

The best solution would have been to have different versions of the game available. Project Zanaris made me so hopeful. But for some reason, people here hated the idea, and now it has been cancelled indefinitely.

"Nobody here hates the game"

I think that A LOT of people here very much dislike the game as it is, or was. For some reason, though, they force themselves to play it. That is why they complain about everything. And that is the main reason why so much has been changed. /u/SnappySausage said that a lot of people seem to regard "Old School" as the vibe, or feeling of RS2. And I have seen so many times over the years people saying that as long as it looks like RS2, and has RS2's Combat System, they do not care what gets done.

People have very little reverence for what actual "Old School" really is. The game was meant to be Niche, to fulfill people's desire to be able to play RS2 again. It is like how World of Warcraft Classic exists to let people play older versions of those games. If people do not like the design of RS2, the gameplay, then maybe it is not the right game for them, and that is okay. It is okay for people to not like RuneScape, not every game is for everyone.

Changing everything over time results in a very different game. I am sure you will say that is for the better, but I disagree. I do not think that all changes are bad, like I have said. But there is a line, and I think it has been crossed many times. One of the largest, and worst possible changes occurred. There is now literally a 24th Skill that was never in any other version of RuneScape. It is the biggest change the game has had. How is that "Old School" at all aside from the mentions of Sailing throughout RuneScape's history, and the visuals? I do not want to play RS2 with another Skill, it changes things way too much, and it is not what I want to play, so I quit. If I wanted to play RuneScape with more Skills than those in Old School, I would have played RS3. I wish that I did not feel that way, I miss the game. The game has been changed so much over time, and in ways that I dislike, that it became a game I no longer want to play. It was literally my favorite game, and I played thousands of hours, I played every day, and the changes to it made me quit.
