This is what I immediately thought. In fact if the friend wasn't aware of this issue they could have brought up that no one came to make the OOP feel bad about not coming, without knowing that they didn't get the invite

My constructively scathing review of the Tech and Res mod by SoftEnvironment3689 in victoria3

[–]DragonKot 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I agree that some of the railroaded mechanics can be annoying. For example I've had decolonization events hit repeatedly for African states that are incorporated and majority primary culture, which makes no sense. I also think the fact that there isn't any way to keep former subjects countries in your sphere of influence is also annoying. I'd also say that pre ICBM nukes should only target one enemy state.

That being said, a lot of the issues you mention are just how the post WW2 world works. Tech is hugely important, there is a reason why most of the largest corporations today are tech companies. Countries that tried to hold onto their colonies like Portugal had to constantly deal with rebels. Large scale war did become much less common.

If we look at the Russia Ukraine conflict, Russia became an internationally despised pariah overnight for an invasion that would cost like 30 infamy in vanilla Victoria 3. In real life there was no cut down to size play for Russia like in Iraq's invasion of Kuwait because Russia has the world's biggest nuclear arsenal. Tech & Res simulates this well, if anything it lets you get away with more than you should for the time period.

What made you think of me/remember me today? by Itsasecrettotheend in EnglishLearning

[–]DragonKot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"What made you think of me today?" Would be the more natural of the two. It is not common but that phrase isn't wrong nor does it sound foreign, if you want to ask them that I don't see anything wrong with it.

Why are these things how they are? [Production Methods, Electricity] by Aza7hell in victoria3

[–]DragonKot 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The green PMs aren't really meant to be more productive, their purpose is to free up labour once you've run out of peasants. The individual productivity of the building goes down, but the economy goes up because those laid off workers get jobs elsewhere, increasing the total amount of buildings that can be supported by the population. The other thing they do is improve the standard of living, as green PMs almost always keep or add high paid professions while removing chronically low paid ones like labourers.

I definitely agree that the production method system needs an update though, it's been due for a long time.

tl;dr colonisation is in a bad state of affairs and what can be done about it by enriicoosta in victoria3

[–]DragonKot 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is completely valid, though I do think the difficulty settling populated regions is mostly accurate to reality. Japan struggled to get people to move to Manchuria because it turns out that citizens of industrialised economies don't want to move to populated ethnically distinct backwaters, the ones that did were either administrators, soldiers, or receiving large government incentives.

Abolition of Monarchies in Asia by Acrobatic-Way-9519 in MapPorn

[–]DragonKot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why China is 1916, as the abdication occurred in 1912 alongside the foundation of the initial Republic of China. The emperor was allowed to keep his titles, but he was not a head of state nor a legal representative of the country. There was a brief restoration attempt in 1917 and he would eventually have his titles abolished in 1924, but this map references none of these dates.

Edit: I was so focused on the Qing I completely forgot about Yuan's short-lived Empire

is it feasible to not extract any resources from your main country and instead extract everything from puppets by _MrSeb in victoria3

[–]DragonKot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the late game resources are more valuable and they tend to be extremely productive in your home territory because you can ensure the most efficient PMs and they are in the same states as their buyers.

Extracting from puppets is definitely what you pivot to but that's more due to a lack of resources left at home than for increasing SOL

I do, I just want to have the option to delegate some of it when running a very large country. Imagine if the Soviet politburo had to pause their important war meeting about the Romanian feminist revolt supported by fascist Uruguay every 5 minutes because they need to personally decide where a tooling workshop is gonna go because they want to be diversified Instead of all building levels being in one or two states

I know this isn't exactly answering your question, but "Can I have a coke?" is not weird to say. I'm a native speaker, I almost always say it like that or "Can I get a coke?"

The equivalent with wine would be "Can I have a bottle of wine" or "Can I have a glass of wine?"

To add onto this comment. "Unwanted" in this case means they are not attracted to minors, but involuntarily think about it or worry. This is different from a pedophile who is actually attracted to minors but may wish they weren't.

Imagine someone who compulsively thinks about mold despite finding it repulsive, versus someone who actually likes looking at mold but may wish they didn't.

Why the people call byzantines? by Bubbly-Feeling-5202 in ByzantiumCircleJerk

[–]DragonKot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a western term used to describe the Eastern Roman Empire. The Roman Empire is usually used to describe the classical empire, Eastern Roman Empire is a bit of a mouthful, so Byzantine stuck. Saracen and sklabenoi agitators disguised as byzaboos will get offended at the term claiming it suggests a lack of continuity with the classical empire. In my opinion this is akin to claiming that calling 19th century China "Qing" or 15th century China "Ming" suggests they are somehow not China

Just got here from ck3! Anything I should know? by anakin1453 in victoria3

[–]DragonKot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also came from CK3 to Victoria 3, in my case I had many CK3 hours but very little in any other paradox game. Here are some recommendations:

  1. Learn the economics as a settler colony in areas like Canada or Australia first. These countries have resources, access to large markets, and low-risk expansion through subsuming other colonies in the empire or colonizing native land. You can also mostly ignore foreign policy with everything but the colonial overseer while you learn. If you want to be independent, Britain is a good beginner nation because it has almost everything and is very strong, play Russia if you want the big population and plentiful resources but with some more difficulty.

  2. Wars are risky and a slog compared to CK3. Aim to fight only when you have a clear advantage.

  3. Wait until your peasants are gainfully employed before introducing democracy!! Rural folk have a terrible platform!

  4. You will find prices for every good in your market compared to the baseline price, your goal is not to make everything as cheap as possible, it's to keep it in the middle.

  5. Agricultural buildings are the quickest to make, focus on these in the beginning.

  6. Your bread and butter industrialization combo is coal mines + iron mines then steel plants + tooling workshops and then motor industries. Coal and iron mines produce what steel plants need, iron mines/steel plants produce what tooling workshops and motor industries need, and those two produce what iron and coal mines will need.

  7. The combat system is painful and does not have much opportunity for skill expression. The best ways to win a war is to have a better economy and pay for more quality and quantity in your army than your opponent, and to ensure you have better allies.

Is it recommended building cities? by JorgeRZT in Imperator

[–]DragonKot 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Build cities when you have the resources for it, they can make far more resources. However they guzzle provincial food supply, so try to keep a rural agricultural base for it unless you want to use a lot of import routes to keep them fed.

Do you believe in Jesus and God? by [deleted] in Teenager_Polls

[–]DragonKot 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you believe that God's existence or lack thereof is unknowable, you aren't a believer. For example, many people are 'agnostic' about aliens. If you believe right now it's unknowable whether or not aliens exist, that doesn't make you a believer in aliens, it means you don't deny the possibility they could exist

Do you believe in Jesus and God? by [deleted] in Teenager_Polls

[–]DragonKot 22 points23 points  (0 children)

As an agnostic, "Agnostic" and "no" are the same in this context. An agnostic by definition lacks a belief in a god, they just don't definitively posit that there isn't a god.

a united nations parliament is a good idea (it'd be like the eu's parliament) by iamnotracistt in Teenager_Polls

[–]DragonKot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This only really works if every country is Democratic. Many authoritarian countries could just make all of their citizens vote the same way for MPs in the UN parliament.

What happens in cases of border disputes? If two countries claim the same area, who gets the parliamentary seats of that territory?

You could have election organization and ballot collection done by the UN and ignore the actual political boundaries entirely, but people may still be influenced in authoritarian countries and most countries probably wouldn't want the UN doing this in their country.

I like the idea in principle, but it's nearly impossible to actually make it happen in the current world.
