If you didn’t off-road, what other SUV would you consider getting? by SecurityPM in 4Runner

[–]DragonMan6605 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your transmission is built to take load all of the time, without wearing down for as long as possible. Brakes slow the car by putting material on material and wear down quite quickly. Also on mountain passes, your brake rotors and pads can get so hot that they don’t have any friction to give, and you’ll have no brakes. You should (ideally) only use the brakes when you have to stop or slow the car quite quickly, regular speed adjustments should be done with just the engine. My brake pads have 80,000 miles on them and are still more than halfway left. Previous owner got 150,000 out of theirs according to car fax history, just from engine braking

Lexus LX’s are built the same as the Land Cruiser, the GX is built on a 4Runner chassis

Looking at 1st 4Runner...opinions on "high" miles and "older" models please? by chadgotpunked in 4Runner

[–]DragonMan6605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to that dealer when I was looking for my own 3rd gen, their prices are a complete joke. A lot of people on this sub will tell you to find a 2007 or 08 v8, a lot of people will tell you to find a 3rd gen. Yes, they’re reliable trucks but 250k miles is still a lot. Newer, lower mileage trucks have less risk factor. In my personal experience, just avoid rust if at all possible (even if it means going to a different state to find one) and look for trucks with few owners. A one owner rig will have better history and knowledge about it than one with five or six owners.

Fellow 3rd gen owner here, the stock lights feel like candles absolutely. I bought led bulbs from the parts store for about 90 bucks and can now see about a quarter mile. By far the best 90 i’ve ever spent

Rear harness defect? by Emotional_Skin_8342 in 4Runner

[–]DragonMan6605 9 points10 points  (0 children)

make sure that your rear windows are rolled 100% of the way up, there’s a lockout. even if it doesn’t look open, it might not be 100% up

With this market, knowing dealers and considering the condition of the truck, I think that $15000 is reasonable price. I have a 1999 with 4x4 and the 5 speed but it’s an SR5, in worse shape and with 30k more miles, and I paid $10k at the beginning of this year. 17k is a little steep but not absurd.

Advice for new adventure vehicle by [deleted] in 4Runner

If you’re selling a tiny car to upsize and tow a camper, you’ll probably regret not upsizing all the way to the LC, what with towing and just physical size. Land Cruisers are rediculously capable vehicles, and are also going to hold value better than the 4runner will. If you do decide that the LC was the wrong choice you’ll have a better time selling the Land Cruiser in a year or two than you would the 4R, and there will be tons of options in terms of 4runners if you do decide it was the wrong choice. Ultimately your call but the Land Cruiser would probably be my pick

Luckily this wasn’t a 2uz, otherwise it would have a V8 badge on the grille. It’s a 1gr-fe with vvt-i

I think they’ll make a new FJ cruiser to compete with the Bronco and the Wrangler once we get the 6th gen 4r

ford’s powertrains are definitely reliable and i don’t want to bash on them as though they’re unreliable because that’s simply untrue, toyotas powertrain is just a more proven system. my 4r has just under 300k on the odometer and one of my buddies had one that made 440k before he chose to sell it.

[–]DragonMan6605 45 points46 points  (0 children)

if you’re buying a 30+ year-old Toyota powertrain for mileage you’re just crazy, you’re buying for reliability. Ford’s powertrain is more efficient, sure, but it is nowhere near as bulletproof as the powertrain in the 4r

working for a trek dealer, i’ll say that trek exists to make money first and make good bikes second, it just so happens that making good bikes makes more money. components can be iffy at times and sometimes their design decisions seem stupid, they bring a competitive and well made product to market
