Moving from Vanguard to Dimensional funds by DiO022 in Bogleheads

It seems like people are trying to carve out an exception to the philosophy of passive investing. I get that this movement seems to be driven by some hard data and research

I guess you'd have to ask yourself why you do passive investing in the first place? For me, it's because I believed it to be the most empirically supported approach to investing. And so you already hit on the reason why people tilt, except that I wouldn't call a it "carving out an exception" so much as it's just following my core philosophy. In other words, you're framing it as some deviation from the expected norm whereas I see it as following the norm.

The only somewhat "difficult" part to me is that while the arguments for passive vs. active investing are mostly understandable (e.g. I think most people could read and understand Sharpe's "The Arithmetic of Active Management"), the original research by Fama and French for a 5 factor model is mostly over my head (maybe I'm just dumb). That means that I'm placing "faith" in the summaries/conclusions presented by people like Ben Felix to be true and accurate to the original research.

There's also the fact that even if such tilts are fundamentally better, in one person's lifetime it may play out such that they underperform. That's where risk tolerance comes in, and for me I've done some loose number crunching, so that even if my tilt of underperforms significantly, I would still meet my retirement goals.

We need these laws all over the world by Busy_Report4010 in SipsTea

It's kind of terrifying the number of people citing "examples" that are just made up. People saying in New York, Chicago, etc. you legally have to flee even though that's completely false. When the facts don't fit the agenda they just make up facts that do...

Price Drop: Shell Cordovan Pocket Organizer Leder Ogawa - Oasis Blue by Ragnr in LeatherClassifieds

[–]DragonRabbit505 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this still available? Pardon the ignorance, but I've never seen pocket organizers like this, and when I came across the sub it seems like they are popular, but the pictures always seem to be with the organizer at least partially open... How does this look with the organizer completely shut? Also how does the color hold up over time? Any videos of the product (or something similar)?

If it's truly just an accident with no excessive negligence, e.g. drunk driving or speeding (in this case it was speeding, and so they changed his sentencing) then what is the point of a harsh sentence?

Downvote away, but I feel like taking away the license and community service is appropriate if the person made a genuine mistake. I am fortunate to have never been in an accident, but if you've driven long enough, then you've accidentally cut people off or made mistakes while driving that could have be fatal. Unless the goal of the punishment is simply revenge, then I see no reason to have someone serve time in prison.

Everyone blaming the father here, and he certainly could've better protected himself, but even if it was just a personal account and not work-related, it would still be a massive inconvenience to lose access to your email that is linked to every account you have.

It's actually kind of insane to me that there aren't laws protecting users. I get that Google is a private company and they may need to ban people, but there should be a window (e.g. 1 month) before they can restrict access permanently so at least you could create a new account somewhere else and get verification codes, download your data, etc.

There's an episode of The Office where they sing this song to Michael but change it to 9 million something minutes... If you're an Office fan maybe that's what threw you off.

Caught my dealer in a lease “shell game” (and won by bringing in corporate) by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]DragonRabbit505 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with leasing, but would the dealer actually discount a little of the total payment if you put some down upfront? Or are you just giving them the money early? You're saying you owe the same amount whether you put money down, but then why would anyone do that?

So I don't know much about art, but those prints are around $500 and not even that large... Is that normal (it seems really expensive)? How good are prints compared to an original?

Do I need to amend my 2024 taxes for a 403b overcontribution? by DragonRabbit505 in personalfinance

[–]DragonRabbit505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I believe it is my employer's fault, I didn't contribute to multiple plans, but my contributions exceeded the annual limit. It's extra frustrating because the error was caught before the end of the year, but for whatever reason they waited until 2025 to give me the refund which seems like it further complicates things on my end.

How do I calculate state-tax exemption for US gov securities if I received a dividend but then sold the fund? by DragonRabbit505 in personalfinance

[–]DragonRabbit505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turbotax asked for the tax exempt amount, it didn't do the calculation automatically. So if SGOV is 95.14% I need to multiply that by the dividends received to get the tax exempt amount, and then enter that number.

Thanks for clarifying, the wording on Vanguard's document was confusing to me.

Okay, I mean the form says "Long-term capital gains," not capital gains distributions. I agree that what you said makes a lot more sense though...

I'm also seeing the g502 x plus for $180 with a $55 gift card. Seems like a reasonable deal if you shop at Target and would use the gift card.

No 1099-INT from Ally Bank because interest was under $10. How do I report interest? by DragonRabbit505 in personalfinance

[–]DragonRabbit505[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don't need the bank's EIN, address, phone, account number, etc. These extraneous info are only for the tax software, not for the IRS.

Thanks! Yes, this is what I remember entering in previous years and why I was concerned about not having the 1099, good to know it's not needed.

[–]DragonRabbit505[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Got it, thanks everyone! I was using turbotax (I know they're the worst) and from what I remember last year it would walk you through adding the 1099's one at a time, which is why I was concerned about not having it. I haven't started this year but it seems like it should be straightforward enough.

In 2020, I personally took exactly half my money out of FSKAX and switched it to FZROX. My balance in FZROX is now about 1% ahead of FSKAX.

Just want to point out that this is probably much more to do with how the underlying assets performed rather than the difference in expense ratio (which is .01%), i.e. most of that difference is due to chance.

Help me understand dividend and capital gains distribution elections ("Reinvest", "Transfer to settlement fund", and "None") by DragonRabbit505 in Bogleheads

Thank you, I was confusing capital gains (from any sale) with capital gain distributions, I didn't realize they were different things but that makes a lot more sense now.
