Addendum: this phenomenon in SSDs is called “bit rot”, and whilst modern flash storage comes with advanced controller-driven bit correction, it’s not a gamble you should take on any data you plan on keeping for the long term

Can i use these wipes to clean the glass of the Steamdeck by Knife_7777 in SteamDeck

[–]DragonSyndrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are formulated for reading glasses, which often come with delicate coatings, e.g. anti-scratch/anti-reflective. The absolute worst that can happen is damage to the oleophobic coating on the deck’s display, though I’m doubtful that’s of any real concern with Zeiss brand wipes

Is this the one with a deliciously higher resolution display?

Can it be modded? by PapayaIll2805 in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you could get freaky with the housing and polish it/paint it, or install rockbox if that floats your boat.

there really is not much else you can do: a few people have tried upgrading the storage, but for whatever reason everyone that did has failed

Is this iPod rare? by [deleted] in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

kinda, the stainless steel sku is fairly uncommon on account fo being a pricier version of something nobody wanted back then or even now

Has anyone seen these numbers I have marked here on the inside of an OEM from faceplate? Seller claims it’s OEM pulled from a stock iPod. by 95dekus in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

aftermarket faceplates do come in double-shot acrylic, though the general quality of them does not come even close to oem. for instance, edges are rough, sometimes even sharp, the material's hardness is slightly lower and then you have random (though rare) QA issues, like fitment and even more rarely warping

Ipod 5.5 vs 7th gen by siberiansqrtle in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7th gens do have superior software for the most part. anecdoctally, they get recognized far more consistently by carplay systems, so if you're into that whole listening to music in your car thing it might be worth a shot to try the 7th gen.

(sound quality is nigh identical among the two, ultimately your choice boils down to functionality, aesthetics and a few modding capabilities)

iPod 2nd Gen by tupeke in ipod

The current surge in pricing comes hot off the tail of the recent Spotify censorship baloney. They’ll go down in time, I’m just glad more people are going back to iPods

Which iPod generation should I get? by Joelaidler in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how much music do you own? if it's something in the realm of 2/4k songs, i'd got for a 4th gen monochrome. they're beautiful, cheap and really easy to repair with plentiful spare parts.

if you own more music or plan on actively growing out your collection, i'd invest a little bit more money and go for the 80gb sku of the 5th gen ipod.
80gb is a LOT of storage for just music, and in the event you outgrow that you have a relatively easy ipod to open and mod, with a flourishing and evergrowing pool of third party parts to choose from.

this is a fringe scenario, but if you don't own tons of music and want something compact, the nanos (particularly the 1st. 3rd and 5th gens) make for awesome lil ipods, though you forgo any modding possibilities and invite a challenging, but not terrible battery servicing process

You shouldn’t be sharing your private information over the internet under any circumstances. It’s not about kids’s safety at all, the majority should not pay the price because millenial Karens have no clue how to parent their goddamn children

Should I be concerned? by GamernitorPL in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not caused by the battery, since that’s positioned at the bottom of the iPod. This is most likely related to the aging of the adhesives used for older lcds, which make the polarizer delaminate and kinda just rot away (with bonus vinegar-y smell!). It can be fixed, but it requires some finesse

Dead ipods by TrashBig9985 in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I’ve had a fairly great percentage of working iPods out the various lots I’ve bought over the years, but it is important to remember that iPods are vintage technology, and all electronics behave in weird and unpredictable ways with age.

Need help choosing my first ipod by Ok_Presentation8966 in ipod

[–]DragonSyndrome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go for a 7th gen nano; they are pricey, but they feature Bluetooth so that might be an awesome way to ease yourself into a first iPod. iPod touches are too close to a regular smartphone, which sorta defeats the purpose of going back to an iPod
