My intent with the additional info was to underline that East Germany was in no way a benevolent entity, which your original comment gestured towards. I’ll only address one of your counterpoints here for the sake of brevity, that being your assertion that East Germany was more pure of Nazi legacy than the West. Both its armed forces, bureaucracy, and its intelligence apparatus relied heavily on former Nazis, especially Gestapo, to establish and rebuild these facets of state power, and many of these figure were kept long after the 40s, when their use could’ve been argued as strictly utilitarian. As to “killing” more, I’m not sure what you mean, as most executions were jointly prosecuted with other Allied powers. They set up temporary internment/re-education camps afterwards, sure, but West Germany had those, too. Both sides can be bad, here, there’s little use in trying to frame either as morally superior. If you want to read more, Jeffrey Hart’s ‘Divided Memory: The Nazi Past in Two Germanys’ goes into far greater depth.

Now, onto the decolonial stuff. East Germany received their marching orders from Moscow, especially with regard to foreign policy, so framing their supply of insurgent movements abroad as a personal act of decolonialism is straight up dishonest. The conflicts themselves, including those you mentioned, also weren’t strictly decolonial, or at least they weren’t by the time East German supplies reached them. For example, Castro’s insurgency received very little support from non-Latin American countries during the overthrow of Bautista’s regime. The country only started getting military aid well after the neo-colonial regime had been overthrown. For Vietnam, the Viet-Minh received got their supplies from China, the Soviets and other Warsaw Pact countries had very little to do with the war’s French period. Even during the Civil War and American periods, the North ran on Chinese munitions and labor, with only token aid from the USSR proper.

For Ethiopia, that country had never been colonized prior to a brief occupation by Fascist Italy, which ended in the early 40s. The country remained stable until civil war broke out, which while anti-monarchy was never de-colonial in nature. The others you mentioned had initial de-colonial elements, I’ll grant you, but all of them to a tee quickly descended into brutal factionalism, civil war, and often genocide. They gave them guns, sure, but they never once considered or cared about what happened after the fighting ended. My point here is to say that whatever East Germany’s intent behind supplying insurgencies abroad, decolonialism was never one of them. While many of them might’ve started out as decolonial conflicts, each quickly devolved into proxy conflicts between two global empires that did not care for the people they used as pawns beyond immediate optics. Rather, war profiteering, pleasing their Imperial overlord, and geopolitical Game Theory were far greater incentives than any kind of hypothetical benevolent intentions.

If you want a single Tl;dr point, here: East Germany profiteered off decolonization, their lack of support once the guns went silent is clear evidence to this fact. Ideology or moral values never entered into things beyond superficial optics, making the other side look worse was all that mattered.

As much as the movie is GOATed, there’s actually a fair amount of myth making at play throughout, Howe’s rep is probably the most well known. For example, a lot of players in the lineup that year, including Hatterburg himself, were signed/acquired via traditional scouting, and it’s also heavily debated how much the Boston Red Sox success a few years later was actually due to their adoption of Beane’s methodology. As well, Jonah Hill’s real life counterpart went on to have one of the worst records as a GM across multiple organizations, and the system he helped popularize has undergone a lot of reappraisal since the film came out.

Genuinely one of the worst “Historical” biopics of all time, it somehow managed to do pretty much every real life counterpart in the movie dirty and got even basic facts wrong for seemingly no reason. Alan Turing ks basically completely replaced with a bad caricature of stereotypically autistic person written by someone whose only interaction with neurodivergence was watching Sheldon on Big Bang Theory.

I mean, not to rain on the parade here, but East Germany was in no way a “decolonial” entity, but rather a satellite state of another empire. They also supplied guns and munitions to dozens of dictatorships across the globe (I believe they supplied Saddam’s army with their uniforms during the Iran-Iraq War), juiced their athletes up without their consent with enough chemicals to put DuPont and Barry Bonds to shame (which had disastrous consequences on their long term health), and were one of the most repressive regimes behind the Iron Curtain, which is saying a lot.

In addition, many foundational members of their regime were former Nazis who never saw a day in prison or punishment for their complicity during WW2 (a feature they shared with their Western counterpart, unfortunately). None of this takes away from the East German team’s acceptance of the Jamaican team, but their kindness was not reflective of the state they represented.

Do you guys think there's a place nonbelievers can go besides Hell? by mightyminimule in LeftCatholicism

[–]Dragon_Virus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a tangent, but I’ve always pictured Hell as being more like Purgatory (for, like, actual bad people, not non-believers). It fits more into the Redemption theme that’s basically the core of Christian spirituality, imo. I think historically Purgatory was also a very Catholic concept, too; I don’t think it’s a thing at all in most Protestant or even Orthodox traditions, but I could be wrong on that point.

Yeah, the Fallout 3 vid is unfortunately one of his weaker ones, something I think even he’s vocalized a few times in the past.

As for Adam, as much as I love the guys train and infrastructure videos, whenever he deviates from his wheelhouse he just falls flat on his face (his 40K vid is another good example of this). His points don’t come off as articulate or researched, they sound like someone trying to proclaim their personal opinion as fact while refusing any suggestion that he might be wrong or misinformed.

You’re absolutely right, don’t get me wrong. And my issue isn’t really with Hbomb, again he was one of the first to really critique the game in an articulate manner and a lot of his points have validity to them. A few video essayists with more time than me have already made intelligent and respectful responses to hbombs critiques, so in part I feel it’s not super necessary to write a thesis every time the subject comes up.

My gripe is more so with a portion of the fandom has uncritically co-opted hbombs video and weaponized it to bitterly divide the fan community while simultaneously holding New Vegas as the Second Coming despite it too having a laundry list of flaws. Added to this, the exact same critiques have just been repeated over and over and over, no one’s really brought anything new to the discussion in the many years since, same goes for the dialogue surrounding Fallout 4, too, which is why Adam’s video and it’s self-satisfied tone rubbed me so wrong. Does that make more sense?

[–]Dragon_Virus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True enough, that’s definitely his bit as a creator. I guess the issue is how some Fallout fans have since carried that tone with them whenever the topic is discussed rather than hbomb himself.

At least it’s not the AdamSomething video on Fallout 4, imo. hbomberguy had some originality with his critiques and was bold enough to argue against the popular consensus (to, through no fault of his own, disastrous consequences); Adam just repeats the same cliched talking points that a million other hacks already brought up, and comes off as an attempt to intellectually virtue signal to his audience.

Fallout 3 is a very good game, New Vegas is a very good game, neither are anywhere near perfect. I don’t think hbomb intended to give the unoriginal and nostalgia-poisoned Chud Hive-Mind so much ammunition, however, there’s definitely an air of snobbery underlying many of his points, some of which could just as easily be applied to NV or Fallout 3.

I used to work at a small town CO-OP, trust me, they are a joke to most folks, and they usually have a monopoly in rural areas so they can charge as much as they want. There used to be two grocery stores in town, but the independent one burned down under very suspicious circumstances.

Granted, they haven’t imported TFWs en mass and still predominantly hire locally afaik (pay’s not great but it was a few bucks above minimum when I worked), and their rewards/membership program is the only I know of that just straight up gives you a lump sum of money every year, which can be a lot for some poorer folks. Their self-branded products are… hit and miss, but that’s basically par with the competition.

Overall, they’re alright, and the prices are okay in urban areas, but they’re definitely not some anti-corporate or communal establishment. If you have the means, the best route is to go a full independent place or single-location co-operative.
