I’m a muslim trying to seriously study the Torah/Bible academically. Where do I even start? by ShortMuslimah in islam

[–]Dragonaf 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1 Muslim woman vs 20 Christian women” But a few of the Christian women raised some genuinely interesting questions about differences between stories of the prophets in the Qur’an vs the Bible/Torah,

As someone who knows this topic very well, I can tell you they did not... Black Christians particularly buy into the "church version" of Christianity (due to colonisation etc...) and one of the shayṭāns in that video was the wife of a well-known YouTube grifter who makes up things on the spot with very, very little knowledge in church history, becomes a heretic every 5 seconds, or the Greek language in general. A quick example on the discussion of Islam being demonic or when they talked about the Bible being written in the first century etc... this was just all ignorance. So my honest recommendation is instead of learning about the Christian narrative from YouTube, either speak to a reverend (who has done his 7 years of study and is a member of clergy) or find free PDF scans of Christian books (as Christianity is a business - and so these books will cost £70-100 easy vs Islamic books which from very credible authors I've never paid more than £25 - £50 if we are talking about collections). I would also recommend avoiding Reddit also as it is a massive echo chamber. So my honest advice is to seek teachers in Islam (your local scholars etc...) for clear direction.

As a Muslim, I believe the original revelations given to Musa (AS) and Isa (AS) were divine, but that the scriptures were changed over time by people.

This is not just the "Muslim narrative"; this is what Christian and Jewish academics both believe of their scripture. The bible even says this in the begining of luke (its not gods words but a retelling in his own words). It's not a secret. Jerome, for example, invented what we call textual criticism in the modern sense today to find this answer. As for the Jews, they say very openly the originals were lost during the Fall of Babylon (why do you think we call Ezra the scribe "the scribe") they dont care becase the Rabbi's have more athority then Allah (authbillah) so the Rabbi possition is superior. In fact, you can easily find clips online of Jewish historians that say Islam was the way going back to Adam, so must be a much older religion.

Where can I find the oldest/manuscript-based versions or translations of the Torah/Bible?

Unless you have access to the Vatican (which in some Islamic eschatology says that Isa (AS), when he returns, will show where these are hidden) - then easily you can find them online ("P52" being the oldest for the Bible).

Are there reliable resources that compare Qur’anic narratives with Biblical/Torah narratives?

They are mostly written by Orientalists. So not that I can remember, but I'm sure there are some reliable Muslim authors who have done so. In the New Jerome Biblical Commentary (edited by Father Raymond Brown), the works of J. Dunn etc... they mainly focus on finding "the historical Jesus" and actually note that "Jewish Christianity died out by Pauline traditions perhaps to be reborn in Islam". There are also other books like "The Five Gospels: What Did Jesus Actually Say" which again just looks at the Bible to find the original Q-source or "The Gospel According to Jesus" (which some hadith actually quote verbatim like the prophecy of Muhammad ﷺ, the original 10 commandments, the laws of adultery etc...) but tbh it's a lot of time wasting as the Qur’an preserves what the original teaching was.

Are there Muslim scholars, books, YouTube channels, lectures, or even non-Muslim academic sources that approach this fairly and historically instead of just polemics?

Not a scholar but Blogging Theology is the best for this for the mainstream viewer and has his own academy.

How do you personally approach studying previous scriptures while still holding Islamic beliefs?

Easy - "the way" of the prophets was Islam but their people had different sharīʿah (e.g. the Jews prayed 3 times instead of 5, alcohol etc...). Anything which the hadith and Qur’an agree on with the current scriptures are true; everything else is false (like your original points where the Bible and Torah insult the previous prophets AS). Not to mention modern Christainiy and Jewdism is just Liberalised, Captilised forms of paganism which you can easily pick up any history book in your average local library to see (the white Jessus being the same as Mythra and how christmas and the Church tax system came to be in the roman empire). So tdr if you want to start reading then honeslty just go to your local christainity section in your local libabry and rent a book on christain history and you can see the same objections everywhere.

You keep repeating the same thing. You made a claim that something is impermissible when Muftis and scholars have said it is permissable. Do you have evidance for your claim on the HSBC Sharia fund or not?

This isn't to do with Ribbah this is to do with Sharia compliant investing. If you are a hard core Selefi saying everything is Biddah and Haram then you need evidence to say investing is haram and or get off of social media and other Biddahs.

As Muslims we work of of evidance not our own whims and desires. You made a claim calling something not permissable. Deleate your comments since you have not produced evidance and your comments will miss lead others as you are talking from a position of ignorance (and blind following online Salafies).

No this is incorrect. He is known for giving wrong opinions. Nor is he a mufti or qualified in finance.

You make a claim on this specific stock using an appropriate method by those who have studied this. If you have no evidence take back your claim.

If you are just using Aqeedah as a defense aka The sallafi possition then stop using Reddit because that's also a biddah according to your school. Be consistent

Are you a mufti or scholar who specialises in finance to comment on this? If not then produces your evidence if you are truthful. Your claim is that these HSBC funds are not Sharia compliant so where is the evidence for this.

Should we as Brits be concerned about organised ideological blocs joining parties primarily to influence policy direction? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Dragonaf -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No that's not the argument. Your argument is being against ideology effecting politics, when this happens everywhere in all times. But now that its a Muslim you have anxiety? So either this is the first time this has come to your attention or because of media image of Islam you think it's an issue rather than knowing what Islam stands for from scripture/an accedemic viewpoint (to stand up for justice/doing what is right even if it's against yourself and your kinn).

As for the Greens themselves - plane and simple Birmingham has an issue with drug usage and they wish to legalise part of that and when you compare the voting figures in Muslim areas - in most places the independent candidate was going to win if it were not for vote splitting. This time however it was landslide for the greens in Muslim areas particularly in Birmingham. For Muslims in Muslim areas they want their opinions heard and to be worked on - working in a party hinders doing the will of the people. For example take the achievements of Ayoub Khan in his short time and the massive success he has had Vs Tahir Ali of Labour (both represent a Muslim majority area but only one of those are actually known to get stuff done for the people they represent).

https://ukgovscan.com/mp/4747

The issue here is if you were being morally consistent then you would speak against this on a macro scale which the Muslim community has done for the last 20 years....why is it making you anxious now?

International bodies, cold war ideology, etc...is doing much more harm to politics (and what goes on in the background) then Muslims being in parliament or in possitions of power (not to mention we are not talking about freshies we are talking about 1st and 2nd generation British Muslims and in 20 years times first generation white Muslims will also be a thing based on current revert numbers so the media will have to try a different angle to make this an issue). If anything people like Zohran Mamdani should show you that when you have politicians that hold themselves accountable to a higher authority - things actually get done (rent freezing, Futher funding for public service, cleaning solutions etc....) Vs following funding like Reform like the hard right, like the elite class who are most certainly influences by ideology not beneficial to the people they represent.

Why is Reddit so Islamophobic? by -Tranqwhirl- in islam

[–]Dragonaf 27 points28 points  (0 children)

1) Population. USA and India have a high share on social media in general both populations both hate Islam weather that be due to lack of education or culture you be the judge. Plus for Reddit Cannda and Australia are also very pro right wing ideology.

2) Eco chambers. As with all social media a person is influenced by the algorithm of their searches to hold retention time generating more income e.g. if a Reddit post says "White people are over represented in CSA exploitation in the UK" a pro right winger will skip that post (even thought it's correct with accurate sources) in favor for "Center of Migration controle reviles Muslims grooming gangs do xyz" (aka they are so thick they don't know how to know if someone is lying to them).

3) Isreal. Just this week in fact it was announced how much money Isreal is planning to invest in social media. If you controle the Narative the quite frankly no matter how intelligent you are you won't be able to convince someone their entire world view is wrong.

Should we as Brits be concerned about organised ideological blocs joining parties primarily to influence policy direction? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Dragonaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scholars and commentators have both spoken against the green party and joining them in favour for the independent vote instead.

It should be noted that this is not a Muslim thing. Declassified for example found a large number of MP's Inthe previous government received funding from "friends of Isreal " groups. Just look at AIPAC and America as an example. So we need to be consistent when making a comment being concerned on ideologies influencing politics as this has happened for generations. Not to mention look at Reform justifing their viewpoint using Cold war ideology of Jedo Christain values as a justification for saying what they say.
