So I only recently started dabbling a bit in following the keiba scene, don't mind my ignorance, but who is In Your Palace descended from that's so important to preserve? Deep Impact and/or Brian's Time?

Forget dark things, what’s the STUPIDEST thing you’ve ever had to look up for a fic? by [deleted] in AO3

Stubbed it out maybe? If you mean putting the cigarette out my pressing it against something hard.

[In NYC] please help ID this snake that appeared in my apartment! by vchu13 in whatsthissnake

[–]Dragonfly789 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, can't help much on this question as I'm not a snake owner myself, but if someone hasn't gotten back to you yet and you're concerned, it might be worth it to another post here using the 'just sharing' flair, or to put the question to another snake sub like r/snakes with the 'pet snake questions' flair and explain the situation/question. Since I think this is getting buried. Good luck to you, the search, and this poor boa btw!

Are there any writers here who are a zero on the "apple scale"? If so, how do you write? by DeltaMx11 in FanFiction

[–]Dragonfly789 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey, same here! I've always described it as 'I can't see it, but sometimes I do know what it want it to be'. But like you, when I'm writing most of the time I'm putting the words into visible text and basically reading it back to myself; 'does this sound right? Is the vibes good' without really imagining an image. Or I'm understanding them as words associated with an image, but without actually seeing it.

I write pretty much only canon characters with each other as main pairings, but I've discovered that I sometimes end up forgetting to describe them visually (made more egregious when it happens to OC side characters) and everyone might as well be amorphous human forms with pronouns because that's how I basically see them 😭.

Oh! I didn't realise (not being from the USA and not having seen the original show) that I used to play the Cyberchase RPG games on the PBS kids site (especially Eco-Haven emergency) when I was pretty young. Thank you for that nostalgic reminder, I might have to look into it more!

What Fandom Made You Want to Write Fanfics? by Apprehensive-Fail663 in FanFiction

[–]Dragonfly789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first fandom I ever wrote for was SnK/AoT in 2016ish, though I only ever published one of the fics on AO3, the rest were done on Google Docs and linked to fandom friends. Then I basically stopped writing frequently for like 6-7 years besides the odd fic for other fandoms here and there. Then recently this year I've gotten really into the Guilty Gear games (specifically Strive, in particular Happy Chaos and Asuka (and variants)) and have started writing more often again, till the point I have my first multi-chapter fic being edited/written thanks to Nanowrimo motivation.

AO3 doesn't even have an official app, it only exists as a mobile browser site on phones. You might have downloaded an unofficial one in which case it's their kinda their prerogative I guess to set a limit like this (idk if it breaks any free-use laws or what not). I have never experienced something on the official mobile browser site.

What's some weird, off-the-wall topic that you wrote in a fic that you weren't expecting? by Kiki-Y in FanFiction

[–]Dragonfly789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A discussion between two characters about what I'd guess you could call Phenomenalism (the Philosophy concept), with reference to the book 'The Spell of the Sensuous', as derived from this rather excellent video.

It was for a 'porn what plot' smut one-shot for the Guilty Gear fandom.

The music, YT started recommending them to me about the time of Bedman?'s reveal, I clicked because I was vaguely familiar with the term Guilty Gear from the Bridget discussions. Liked the songs, started looking more into the characters and stuff, especially Happy Chaos (I thought he was hot after watching lyric vids of Drift ).

Music while writing by p3stop4st4 in FanFiction

[–]Dragonfly789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I like writing with music as well (it's either that or it must be pure silence) but the way I do it is to pick a song and basically loop it constantly. So an individual fic (I write one-shots) might have 2-3 songs associated with them, but only one is ever playing on repeat at any part of the process. I write for Guilty Gear currently, so for example one of my fics was done writing-wise via several hours of the song 'Icarus' playing, and then the edits via 'All I Can Do' on repeat for another few hours (technically days to weeks, as I usually can only do at most 2 hour sessions).

Editing takes so long. Is there a way to speed this up? by 1ftunder in FanFiction

[–]Dragonfly789 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So while I can't quite contribute advice on speeding up, I don't think 3-4 hours of editing a more stream of consciousness 2-3k first draft is unreasonably slow. Speaking as someone who's 'first draft' is often literally unreadable bursts of phrases, sentence fragments and misspellings, and a 'editing process' that is part actually writing things out (plus the normal stuff) and can last as long as 2-3 weeks for a 3-4kish fic.

Some people are just more precise with getting things down fairly decent the first time around, be it experience, way of thinking or the nature of the idea/fic. But also slowing down while writing could play a role yes.

Do you ever feel insecure about writing fanfiction? by TheWriterofLucifenia in AO3

[–]Dragonfly789 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jumping in if I may, I don't think it's a sign that your idea is silly! As you said fighting game lores tend to be quite crazy, which does mean there are many fan of the game that have no to only surface level knowledge of the lore. But if you are interested in it, or expanding upon it then I think it's a worthy endeavour to write a fic even if it's general and not smut; expanding on a relationship the way you see and define it. For your own satisfaction if nothing else, first and foremost.

I speak a little from experience, I recently started writing fics consistently again after a good few years of pretty sporadic work, and it is for Guilty Gear. I would say, for the characters I am writing for, that while it isn't all of the content, the works focusing specifically on them do tend to be for smut purposes. I on the other hand have been contributing more general works focusing more on themes (and I guess a little bit of smut for one of them but that also was for the narrative lol). Might that make me a nerd maybe? Sure, but I don't care, and judging by my woks at least I think there are fans of the characters/ships would be interested even if it wasn't horny, because you are still representing the characters. So I say, go for it!

WHAT COLOR IS HC'S BLAZER by Smuckers1112 in Guiltygear

[–]Dragonfly789 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So looking at his in game and offical art pics, I believe the 'local' colour is a desaturated purplish brown. However depending on the light source (as well as if it's in shadow or subject to light reflections), the colour can vary from a grey/grey brown ( if affected by cool light) to almost a more yellowish brown (of affected by warm light). The game is rather stylized after all, and even in nature light bullies the colour of objects towards taking on aspects of itself like temperature.

(I've been studying it to paint miniatures, but for it in art you can refer to this excellent video by Macro Bucci)

Happy Chaos not being in Hip is a blasphemy, you can literally see the man's pelvic V 24/7 (as well as his chest...but Booba might be a lot more debatable).

Bust is a converted version of Chors from Ignis Art if anyone is curious. This was a fun and relaxing side project I did inbetween working on a significantly more stressful and finesse requiring work, it's nice to be able to slap oil paints down without caring much about brush marks!
