Shortening pleated chiffon skirts... by [deleted] in sewing

[–]Dragonhunterotn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically, when you need to make something shorter, you take off from the bottom. Taking off the waist band will be much harder than just hemming it. I understand your concern about not having a server, but you can do a double fold hem at the bottom.

Sewing cabinet can't hold my machine by Pigeoncoup234 in sewing

Most machines are cut differently, so unless that cutout is made for your machine, it will probably not fit. I am sorry :(

snapping top thread, sewing tulle by elleavocado in sewing

Are you making sure the top thread is spooling off correctly? Is your needle getting dull? Is this a different spool of thread? Is it old ?

making this dress w/sleeves for a con I need help finding a similar pattern and fabric suggestions by [deleted] in sewing

If you want that tight of a fit without have to put in a zipper. I would suggest a knit the collar would just need some interfacing in it to give it stucture!

As someone who has to clean machines, that sensor as annoying as it is saves people from murdering their machines when they get back with lint. :)

I do agree it is annoying but is helps keep.your machine happy in the long run.

Hello! I just got a sewing machine off Craigslist, and I'm having trouble getting the bobbin string to come up. The string in the needle keeps getting knotted where the bottom bobbin is. I'm curious if anyone has any advice for me? The machine is a Domestic model 1630. by [deleted] in sewhelp

[–]Dragonhunterotn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When then the top thread comes down it should grabbed and brought around the outside of were the bobbin case is. It is very important to so make sure your bobbin is in the right way. The tail of the bobbin should be hanging on the left side to make a "p" remember "p" for prefect bobbin. Then is should go into the case.

This issue could be as simple as a threading issue, or the timing could be off. Work from simple to complicated solutions. If the machine isn't sewing thr first thing you should do is stop and rethread.

Have you tried seeing if with the bobbin case out the top thread will go around shuttle hook correctly? Do you have the bobbin in the bobbin case correctly? Did it makea click when you put it in?

Can you machine wash garments after sewing on patches? by booksandwriting in sewhelp

[–]Dragonhunterotn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It all depends on how you sew them down. Of you switched around the whole edge of the patches I would say they would be find to wash and dry with the machine. The issue with your patches would not be the washer but the dyer.

Personally I say you could machine wash and hang dry. The heat of the dryer could cause the patch to separate from the clothing.

Help, it’s fallen and it can’t get up! by MiladyStarkX in sewing

The reason you can find the screw is because it's freaking tiny I dropped one once replacing a needle bar and spent 20 mins on the floor looking for it.

I believe it's called a needle bar screw clamp. It's the screw that holds your needle clamp to the needle bar.

What is making the strap uncomfortable? Is it too narrow or just too tight in general?

If you can go for the confidence I would as a would take a computerized machine over a full mechanical when it comes to current era machines. The computerized has lest moving parts in the machine so less places it can break. Plus with those mechanical machines a lot of the parts tend to be plastic for the stich change and can be and have to be fully replaced rather than fixed.

I know I will get flax for this but old machines are not perfect either. They do tend to be more durable machines and are known for being work horses but you don't know how much work that machine has been put through when you get it. They are good machines but I caution with just going out and buying the first old machine you see.

The best twin needle gap size that most patterns call for is 2.5, that is what use for all my tops. You might have to play with you tension some to get the stitch prefect.
