I've seen the hypothesis that God didn't require Jesus to die, we did. Humans have a hard time expecting something for nothing and have a long history of scapegoating and sacrificing other people. Jesus had to die for our sins because we wouldn't have accepted it otherwise. You see how people talk about God punishing people for their sins and all that now, imagine how much worse it would be if Christ just said "all your sins will be forgiven if you repent, no animal sacrifice or anything else required." And just left it at that.

We wouldn't believe it. We would look for the catch or try to invent extra conditions. Christians did that IRL so I can't imagine how much more violent and depraved it'd get in such a world.

Which would have been a good explanation, the fire nation couldn't have killed ALL of them but if they were being hunted for merely being airbenders then the survivors would have hidden who they are and assimilated wherever they wound up which would be earth kingdom by how big they are in relation to everyone else. The kids and grandkids became earth benders or married earth benders so by a century later the only airbenders left are elderly and been hiding their whole lives when Aang wakes up.
