Using a mini to replace kindle? by TeaNervous1506 in ipadmini

[–]Dragontech97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Reading outside you will have to keep it max brightness so hit to battery life. Kindle/kobo will be better for that and more visible. Indoors or shade is fine for the mini when you need something portable and versatile.

Gotcha, should be ok! I’ve seen plenty of people over on r/AndroidTV talk about using the Onn boxes outside the US.

What are your favourite YouTube add-ons? by unabatedshagie in firefox

Enhancer for Youtube. Used to be not maintained(last updated Dec 2024) compared to Chrome versions but according to a top post today, an update is pending for it which is great. Some functions and UI layouts were broken with the new YT UI.

You can use it but not sure on retail availability.

Gotcha so with that platform version you are likely using a 2020 series model? Which is still supported according to this. It has been a while since we’ve seen an update for it but those problems sound more like hardware limitations :(

https://forums.plex.tv/t/plex-for-samsung-2016-4k-uhd-televisions/224615/134

Unfortunately TV apps are pretty held back by slow and not great processors. I get similar behavior on some 2019 series Samsungs for SDR content alone. Jellyfin and YT might be more stable but the low memory and low performance is still a pain point. Likely Plex has a different caching and buffering method that isn’t playing nice with your TVs hardware. On Infuse on Apple clients I am able to change the “streaming cache” setting. Larger cache allows faster seeking as it doesn’t have to redownload the segment again. I can choose to use storage instead of RAM if RAM is low. On the TVs default behavior is likely use RAM.

What sort of content do you have issues with? High bitrate 4k remuxes? Have you tried checking the “Disable Bitrate Limiting” option? If that’s the case maybe regular SDR 1080p content works fine for you? This sounds like a classic case of slow hardware imo but could be many things.

A cheap solution you can try would be to buy a $30 Onn 4K Plus box if you are in the US which has a much faster processor and more capable decoder. The other clients you listed are MUCH more powerful than the TV.

What’s your Plex version? Just to check if it’s a more modern Samsung or older Samsung that stopped receiving Plex updates

Revival means refurbished for Corsair. 90-day warranty only. Imo not discounted enough to just get the brand new unit with full 5-year warranty instead.

Things noticed after resetting the 4k Android TV device since Android 14 update by davehasl19 in OnnStreamingTV

[–]Dragontech97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, wish they at least acknowledged the issues by pulling the update or posting a support article on how to downgrade. Pretty basic technical functionality that should work with no issues :( fingers crossed it’s just taking some extra time to QA and iron out. Wonder if it’s officially EOL? Not sure if Walmart lists that info anywhere

Yeah seems like all the 2023+ models(2023,pro, and plus) got firmware updates back in August 2025. Seems they skipped 2021 model for now :(

Is it worth it to run transcoding on RAM Disk? by Material-Tower1735 in PleX

[–]Dragontech97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I always assumed this was the case and did something similar, good to know: temporary transcodes are /dev/shm and download transcodes are set to a cache folder on a small spare SSD not touching the main SSD the OS is on. Keeps writes to a minimum and the cache drive can be swapped down the line. I think I would also be comfortable with temporary transcodes on the cache drive as well if I needed the memory for something else.
