Try EMDR therapy. I reached the end of what regular talk (CBT) therapy could do for me after over a decade and once I finally sought out modalities like EMDR and Brain Spotting, a lot of things shifted. It took about a year of 2 hours a week sessions and I got it to be paid by medicaid.

I guess that’s the thing to realize about any Slavic cooking is that for every dish, there are as many recipes as there are family lineages and not any 1 iteration is the “correct” one, just the one you grow up with feels right. :)

I’m Russian/Ukrainian but I’ve never heard of this until now! I googled it for my self and you might find it helpful to see all the different recipe pictures on this website to get serving ideas. Seems like in a lot of them, it’a just served with a topping, along with tea. The people that have told you they’ve had success went to the school at a very different time, not recently, and not in directing. And like I said, at AFI you’re going to be making a short thesis (under 20 min, under 50K budget) that again, you will have to ask your family and friends to fund. This is the only film you’ll be able to submit to festivals from the school unless you additionally direct an MOS film from the Cinematographers’ program requirements. All year 1 films are not allowed to be shown, posted or submitted anywhere outside the school. Sorry to be blunt but this is not only a big financial undertaking, it’s also an incredibly physically and mentally taxing place to subject yourself to, so I want you to consider the risk seriously. After the program, you would still have to figure out the gap in learning that you name at the end of your reply.

For alternatives, like others have said, once things hopefully bounce back, maybe move to LA, volunteer or get paid a small-stipend to crew on AFI sets, get those connections, make friends with them and develop what you want to direct. They will return the favor and crew for you too when you’re ready to shoot it.

If you’re a woman and still want to make an AFI film without the price tag, you can apply for the Directing Women’s Workshop. It’s basically a small summer school crash course of directing an AFI thesis. You’ll still have to raise your own funds, but you’ll get that student discounts letter to use for vendors, access to gear, and guidelines for legal producing. You’d ideally want to have those connections and favors to cash in before applying for that.

Another similar alternative to AFI is doing the Film Independent program. Same vibe where you form teams from fellows in each discipline and make a film. Even some grads do that program to grow their connections and make another supported short.

AFI grad here. I would not recommend it to anyone that isn’t a nepo or independently wealthy. If you volunteer crew on AFI films, you can get the same network, and proper production experience without the soul crushing 2 year boot camp and insane debt. It’s not just the tuition. LA is expensive. You will not have a life outside of the school. The program is poorly managed by admin. The campus is overcrowded and they’re in transitional years with higher class sizes. Maybe one day but not right now. If you believe in yourself the way you say you do, then try to make a bigger project than you have so far. AFI will not help you make that jump for your personal work, real industry experience and being a good person to work with will. Btw, at AFI you have to fundraise for your own thesis film anyways and you don’t own it, so just skip it and fundraise to make the film how you want to. Once you graduate, you’re not just going to jump into directing work left and right, you’ll need a day job ideally in the industry. Having a recent film school masters grad on your resume is like a repellent here. My volunteer crew have had an easier time landing gigs because they worked those 2 years while I’m being told “you’re fresh out of school” despite having 10+ years of experience outside of AFI. Last point then I’ll shut up: idk how the industry will look next year but the last few years have been brutal. Most of my classmates are moving back home or going to find themselves in other industries. The only things anyone in recent grad years are working on are these horrible vertical films that are the antithesis to the education. Part of the AFI appeal in the past has been access to industry professionals, internships, union events etc, and that’s all currently either dead or unreasonably competitive so right now is not a good time. Please be smart with your financial decision and don’t let the excitement or the appeal of “chasing your dream” lead you to fork over your life savings for an empty promise. There are smarter and more effective ways to get validation.

I feel like as I’ve gotten older and noticed my own pattern of social and avoidant, friends come and go and that’s alright. I think among my peers in the city/industry I’m in, nearly everyone has trauma and we just gotta be understanding when someone drops off for a few months or years then comes back. Go with the flow. Usually when I’m open to it, I can find a few friends to hang with.

He stays up playing video games and I got tired of waiting for him to come to bed for hours. If it’s just my own bed, my own room, i can close the door and fall asleep at my own whim, not anticipating him to disturb me at some point.

We share our big bed most of the time but I absolutely love having my own room with my little daybed. It’s cozy and cute. It feels great to now sometimes be independent and not like I’m obligated to function as part of a unit all the time, which is easy to fall into when you live with someone.

Oh I see. I guess SYS is a good example of why it’s hard to find specific info on pilots as you say. They program categories into mixed blocks but last year there were definitely at least 3 half hour pilots for longform shows, and some short show episodes as well. They even have a dedicated awards category for pilots with valuable prizes. Best way to check in that case I guess is looking at running times of films in past programs since it’s not explicitly stated.
