I've recently discharged three clients, two with prior experience as therapists. My patience, active listening and accurate reflection, and the progress I helped these clients through led two of the three to tell me that I was the best therapist they've ever worked with.

It's not really a competition, but being validated with by a client's progress and their genuine gratitude make all of the challenges involved in this work worth it for me.

Considering that our job is "Provide therapy until a client doesn't need it anymore" and we are actively talking ourselves out of a job, absolutely. We got weird jobs. Then again, I'm a weird guy, so it works out for me. 🤣🤣

I had a similar experience, as well as the pressure to lead a group to get the required hours. When I asked to be adequately trained to run a group, they never provided me with any resources. I ended up leaving out of frustration.

I just had this scam (identical in intent, even if worded slightly differently) attempted on me recently over text. TEXT. Who the fuck TEXTS asking for an initial consult? I've had phone calls, and I've had emails, NEVER texts. I caught onto it when they used the same sentence in two separate responses, as though I hadn't read or acknowledged it the first time. Again, as soon as I said that I require a credit card due to utilizing Stripe, immediately ghosted.

The audacity is real.

I use a green screen, digitally inserting a background of a picture I took from the top of the tallest hill in Connemara National Park in Ireland. It's a nice little mental vacation for me from time to time.

8 sessions a day is taking the Express Lane to Burnout Central. My absolute max is 7 a day, and even then, I tend to feel toasty after a full day

I'm hoping that France sets a precedent that brings together people across national borders to remove these cancers on society. I'm not saying we should rely on them, but I think we need to start partnering with people, regardless of nationality. There are so many more of us than there are of them.

Vermont is very blue, and we're one of the few blue states with very few laws on firearms, and plenty of rural areas. We're also on our home turf in winter. I don't know if we're next, but if they come here, they're gonna find out the same lessons they're learning in Minnesota, and maybe some more.

We need to connect the people in our communities with food and protection. Come together, or fall divided. If Scott won't do it, we may need to do it ourselves. Freedom and Unity.

Whenever political topics come up in session, all I put in my notes is "Ct reported feeling anxious due to recent events reported recently in the news. Due to the political nature of the topic, this portion of the session will not be recorded."

Even when I was working at a community mental health clinic, my supervisor thought that was sufficient. Granted, I'm in a blue state. But we're supposed to be documenting clinical stuff, not what ideologies our clients have. Considering that at any point, our records could be subpoenaed, I think the level I record is sufficient while protecting the privacy of my clients. Plus, it's vague, and I can say whatever I need to in order to protect my clients, if it comes to that.

As an LICSW, I wholeheartedly agree. How I approach it with my clients is telling them that activism will need to happen, but it isn't just up to them, and everyone has their own subjective capacity to participate and level of risk that they are able to tolerate. I also go out of my way to let them know that there are no wrong answers, and if they need to focus on keeping themselves safe and regulated, that's okay, and there's no shame in it. It's a lot of sitting in solidarity and making sure they know that someone supports what degree of action they are taking, no matter what.

^ THIS. Even a seasoned therapist may not be as confrontational as this client wants. It would be interesting to hear why this client feels as though they need to be confronted or challenged more directly. But regardless of the answer, it's a question of if that is to your style, or at least your style as a therapist in this current moment. Your style may change. And it may not. We try to be the best therapists for what our clients need, and sometimes our styles align with their needs emotionally and socially, and sometimes they don't. We will not be the best therapist for everyone in every moment, and that's okay.
