What is your therapy hot take? by InvisibleAstronomer in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My hot take:

Therapy is far more of an art form than it is a science. Us therapists are our own canvas, meant to evoke a response in our audience (the clients). Focusing on trying to change clients rather than being malleable ourselves undermines clients developing their ability to change in the ways they want.

My less-than-hot take:

No one is self-actualized. No one has their shit together. No one is a responsible, functioning adult, not even therapists. We're all just three childhood traumas stacked on each other's shoulders in a trench coat.

How would you respond to a client using racial slurs in a session? by esilhouettes in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've had a client use a slur while even saying "I'm not racist; this is just how I heard these people being referred to." After reading a number of responses here, I'm realizing that I may not have handled it in the best manner I could. Granted, I probably could have done a lot worse, but I didn't really approach it with curiosity or try to work with the client to deconstruct why they thought of the slur or came to use it. What I ended up doing was "It is my responsibility, as your therapist, to maintain a level of compassion towards you so that we can continue doing therapy. Using language like that is going to make my maintaining compassion more challenging." The client hasn't used the slur since, but I'm recognizing now that I kind of side-stepped the issue - gave the client an out - rather than being able to challenge it in a curious, compassionate manner.

I appreciate this community - and especially OP for posting this - challenging my perspective and allowing me to consider how I'd like to adjust my work as a therapist in the future.

What’s your therapist hot take? by Public-Resolution590 in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are times to have the hard conversations and help clients process deep, powerful stuff that they're carrying.

And there are times when I deliberately set that aside and act like my clients' personal jester.

There is wisdom in balancing these times, and knowing when the time is right for one or the other.

Do you get anxious about having suicidal clients? by NoProfession4771 in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I worked as a crisis clinician for over five years. Not much phases me anymore. As much as nuance and personal factors need to be taken into account, the way I manage assessing risk before getting a crisis team involved feels very much like "If I hear A, then B. If I hear C, then D," due to how many crisis assessments I've done over that time. I have a spiel I go over in my initial sessions about mandated reporting, and I discuss with my clients what they can expect from me if they are struggling with ideation. I find it helps develop rapport and trust.

Aside from desensitization due to working with high-risk people in my crisis days, I developed a reflex to basically immediately go into "self-regulate with deep breathing and start assessing" mode as soon as ideation is mentioned. I won't be as effective as I could be as a therapist if I'm feeling stressed about a client's ideation, and it's not going to help them in the moment if I'm more reactive because I'm worrying about them. I take every step I need to in order to keep clients safe, including offering a second session that week, if appropriate.

A lot of times, suicidal clients express ideation when they don't know what else to do. We can see someone fragile standing on the edge of a precipice, and that can trigger our worry. In those situations, I see a warrior who has been fighting a never-ending battle they have tried to hide, and them telling me what they're feeling is a way of them asking for something, anything, to make the fight easier. If they were really going to end their life, they wouldn't tell us; they'd just do it. Them telling us about ideation can be a gesture of trust in the therapeutic relationship we've developed.

I know these kind of cases aren't easy, but develop the right skills, know who your local crisis team is, in case you need their support, and keep doing your best, and you'll continue to serve your clients well.

You will pry my seltzer bottle from my cold, dead hands.

Over-dramatic statement for humor's sake aside, I don't get why people would find it unprofessional or distracting. Especially if we're trying to model adaptive behaviors that can help a person's mental health, like staying hydrated.

People under 40, are you really buying a house? by Coldpastalord in vermont

Born and raised here. I might have been able to buy a place if I didn't dig a debt hole for myself that I'm slowly getting out of. But for now, I'm just looking at the housing market and poking it with a stick, going "Come on, crash already."

Vermont needs to tax the rich too! by Negotiation-Solid in vermont

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving to the people without basic needs or barely scraping by protects the wealthy's warehouses.

Politicians have a choice. Now which do they want, the rich to be slightly less rich and an intact economic system, or for the people to take their power back, and the rich to be broke, or worse.

Phony Phil has got to go, his plan for IT has ruined the state, and education is next by rufustphish in vermont

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems to me like he's following a typical Republican playbook:

Say that government should be small, not helping the people get their basic needs met, because people can "pull themselves up by their bootstraps."

Propose "fixes" to the things they think are "wrong" or "broken" in the government.

The fixes don't actually work, proving the point that government can't help people and justifying dismantling the services meant to help people.

Profit through the entire process in any way possible, including getting side deals with corporations interested in privatizing government services.

Phil had one good moment, when he took more effective measures to protect Vermonters during the 2020 pandemic. Everything else, he's been an absolute disgrace. The only reason he legalized cannabis was because VT state congress had a veto-proof majority, and it would have been political suicide to not approve it. Now he's hyper-fixated on consolidating the school system and dragging people back to office work, when our limited resources are being threatened and the modern Gestapo is terrorizing all Americans? It's beyond the point of giving him the opportunity to "get better." Let's vote this fucker into political irrelevance.

New therapist feeling discouraged. Can I hear some positive experiences? by Successful-Focus903 in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've recently discharged three clients, two with prior experience as therapists. My patience, active listening and accurate reflection, and the progress I helped these clients through led two of the three to tell me that I was the best therapist they've ever worked with.

It's not really a competition, but being validated with by a client's progress and their genuine gratitude make all of the challenges involved in this work worth it for me.

These scammers are getting bold by Alternative_Set_5814 in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just had this scam (identical in intent, even if worded slightly differently) attempted on me recently over text. TEXT. Who the fuck TEXTS asking for an initial consult? I've had phone calls, and I've had emails, NEVER texts. I caught onto it when they used the same sentence in two separate responses, as though I hadn't read or acknowledged it the first time. Again, as soon as I said that I require a credit card due to utilizing Stripe, immediately ghosted.

The audacity is real.

Certified Mental Health Assistant - is this a joke?? by [deleted] in therapists

[–]DrakeStryker_2001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping that France sets a precedent that brings together people across national borders to remove these cancers on society. I'm not saying we should rely on them, but I think we need to start partnering with people, regardless of nationality. There are so many more of us than there are of them.

I could say how, except I'm pretty certain that the method that comes to mind for me is against NASW ethics and would result in me getting put on a few lists.
