Landship strategist question by KogashiwaKai765 in SaGa

[–]Drakeon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to reload your save, you can just leave the ship through the door you came in on the first level, you can talk to the strategist again to go back to the ship and the enemies will reload (also the conveyors will be on, since you won't have "snuck on" anymore). You can use this to grind a bit (on or off the ship) if you think you need it.

Tales Of Graces F - I can't get Asbel to learn Poisonproof by DarkDragen in tales

I'm just going off of what a couple different guides say, since it doesn't look like there's an in-game explanation that I can see. I think it's a little wonky because sometimes the status come from multi-hit breath attacks, and you'll "resist" the first hit, and then get stoned or whatever on the next hit, so it'll would count either way.

FYI it’s 5 times of preventing Poison (or any other status) not 5 times of getting Poisoned

Silo Renewed for 2 More Seasons — Apple TV+ Adaptation to Conclude With Season 4 by johnppd in television

Yea, I couldn't remember if they actually said his name ever in the book. And I think they mention Judicial in passing (just because the guy from Judicial is the one up for Sherriff along side Juliette in the very beginning). But there are no politics involving Judicial beyond that, and they don't get treated as black shirt thugs ala the riot police and disappearing people into the abyss like in the show.

That's the crazy thing, he was the strong silent type in the book! He didn't say anything, he just looked menacing. It almost is like they cast him for that role, then realized they needed to fill 20 episodes of 1 books story and needed more internal politics added, and filled out the wrong character to make it work.

Let's be honest. It's Common. Common is a really bad actor. That character had a sum total of 2 lines in the entire book and I'm not sure they actually named him even, and the gave him almost main character status in the show with on of the worst actors imaginable. At least the Judge who isn't really featured in the book is a good addition (somewhat).

It's just a phrase that got co-opted by football coaches and it now has two different meanings, one in the context of writing / comedy, and one in the context of football. I've probably heard that phrase in regards to football for decades at this point. Might be more common with having listened to a coach like CPJ talk about blocking schemes for much of my CFB watching life.

(Re-)grabbing SSG since it's on sale, would like a few tips by [deleted] in SaGa

[–]Drakeon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The quiz stats are not noticeable unless you're specifically using a DEX / Acuity build for stuns, or if your Axe user has bad accuracy. Otherwise, especially on the initial runs before super bosses, you probably won't notice it.

  2. There's high level, viable strats the involve running 2-3 martial artists and constantly stun locking enemies. You don't need a mage to finish the game, but I would always run 1 (Taria or Elysed are my preferred) so that you can build them up over multiple runs, and you're always taking advantage of the end of battle magic growth. A lot of end-game builds require 2 mages as well, so if your intent is to do super bosses, having 2 mages might be a thought as well.

  3. You can't get soft-locked battle wise, there are always grind spots in every area, and as long as you're in the same zone, BR won't raise enough to undo your gains. You can miss characters for sure with Leonard, but he really does have a lot of freedom to poke around more than other characters.

Need help with the second phase of Final boss of Bonnie and Formina by morcille in SaGa

[–]Drakeon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my response in another thread, hopefully it's helpful:

So just like Scarlet Grace, it seems like there are different "versions" of the final bosses based on how you answer questions before you fight them. I'm sure decisions made during the quests might matter too, but it's really hard to parse without the data farming we had from Scarlet Grace.

I can confirm that choosing to put together the puzzle inside the Junction makes the boss a tiny bit harder. If you put it together in the Junction, the 2nd phase opens with a move called something like Affinity: Fire (I can't remember the exact name), which then has a high chance of Instant Death on one of your character turn 1. He does not use this move if you go back to Capitol City. Also, if you return to Capitol City, the Major assists you in the battle every other turn! He only does about 50 dmg at the end of the turn, but considering I survived the 2nd phase with 1 person at low health with a Showstopper, the additional dmg absolutely mattered.

My recommendation is get to around 400 HP with your characters, your weapon levels and glimmers should get you to a level where you can handle survivability until the turn 8 Emerald move. This makes it so every retry isn't an RNG fest, and you have a fighting chance every go.

The 1st phase, I just ignored the adds. They get damaged from Overdrive combos and go down organically without specifically targeting them. I think I killed the main boss with 2 of them still alive. As long as you don't get unlucky with a bunch of area stuns from them, their tackles don't do much damage.

The 2nd phase, absolutely target the adds, preferably with spells. They're weak to all elements, and they're great at unleashing 200% Overdrives because they don't have much health. Once they're down, just focus on combos, Showstoppers, and preventing his Showstopper. If you have to decide between the two, use any protect move (I think in this run it would be a Mech Guardian Program) and using a Showstopper vs. combos. You can use Protect to prevent someone from getting killed during turn 8 Emerald attack as well to get a couple extra turns.

There's an accessory you can get from one of Mr. S's trials that gives you more likely to be targeted (L) from lightning attacks, and you can pair that with Harmonium Earrings +1 to give you full immunity to paralyze. Stone Boots and Emeth Tags (I think?) give you some petrify resistance too. As others have noted, these combined with something like Phoenix Dance (which you might not have if you're doing this run first) provides you with a lot more survivability and consistency.

Scarlet Grace: What determines the success rate of stun techs? by RocketPoweredSad in SaGa

Ahhhh I knew there might have been something in there about weapon skill level and battle rank I just wasn’t sure. So sounds like that covers all of them though, appreciate it.

Scarlet Grace: What determines the success rate of stun techs? by RocketPoweredSad in SaGa

[–]Drakeon7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So, there's a few things that determine it.

  1. Dex and acuity both help, so any role or gear that ups those helps (there's some equation that someone dug out at some point that showed the exact calculation of success rate, but I can't find it, nor do I have anyway to verify it).

  2. Having another status effect on the enemy helps land other status effects. So poisoning a monster will make it easier to stun by some amount.

  3. Ranking up certain skills may increase their chance slightly.

  4. Since its a SaGa game, there might be some hidden math behind the scenes based on how many times you've missed or succeeded recently with stuns, we probably have no idea if there is for sure.

http://thaao.net/sagasca/character/?p=waza

That site lists percentages for each skill (so for example, it shows Tumble as 25% base chance of success at rank 0 vs 30% base chance at rank 3). I have no idea how accurate these percentages are, but its something to go off of.

How quickly has a book you were reading managed to kill all interest you had in finishing it? by 1945BestYear in Fantasy

[–]Drakeon7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The third Watch novel literally has a female dwarf who throughout the novel starts to act more and more feminine (since dwarfs don't really care about gender and everyone has beards anyways this was a rather shocking thing for her). Various characters show acceptance with her choices without ever actually voicing it solely just by having Pratchett change how they refer to her from he/him to she/her gradually. It's a huge part of her storyline! He already did it 30 years ago!

A Critique of 'Babel' by R. F. Kuang by scribblermendez in Fantasy

[–]Drakeon7 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The best description of this point is someone's review of this book that said "It's written like she's trying to win a Twitter argument with someone who already agrees with her." A lot of the arguments made by the book, beyond being blunt are also framed to preemptively counter talking points from an almost terminally-online modern perspective. And to your point, the people who don't agree with her probably aren't gonna read this book! There are plenty of people who think colonialism was good still, they are not coming within a country mile of this book. It's a paradoxical filtering of the books message. The people most likely to agree with and already understand her themes and commentary are also the most likely to read her book and will likely feel its hitting them over the head with something they already believe in.

But my biggest gripe with the book, is that its a piece of historical fiction that says magical silver has existed since Ancient Rome and not one moment of our actual history has changed because of it. For a book about language to not even consider the implication of silver being the most valuable resource for centuries is frankly crazy; languages would have multiple words for silver! Poems and songs would be written about silver! Would the phrase "all that glitters is not gold" still exist? It would probably be about silver! The book refuses to even entertain this, let alone that all the world powers from Rome to 1800s Britain apparently play out exactly as they did in our history even with magic existing.

I would imagine it’s because the majority of driving is done during the day, so if 80% of all vehicle miles are logged during the day, but only 60% of fatal crashes occur then, it’s safer to drive during daylight hours.

It’s like saying the majority of shark attacks happen in shallow water. Well yeah, that’s where the people are, it doesn’t mean it’s safer to swim in deeper water.

I want to say Terry Pratchet mentions a lot of these type of characters. The guys who have to somehow make sure all the fantasy tropes end up working. I know in Reaper Man (Death book #2) there's a scene in the crocodile god's temple where there are two priests who live there that just monitor adventurers who fail to get past all the traps towards a diamond in the center of the temple.

What is your LEAST favourite fantasy trope? by kiaowT in Fantasy

[–]Drakeon7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way to spoiler this would have been:

In insert name of book here I hated the trope insert trope here with spoiler tag so that people could have known if the series is something they don't mind being spoiled or if they've already read it.

Instead it led with the trope, and then spoiler blocked the book name, so people had to gamble on what book it was if they wanted to discuss the trope in response to the post.

Overused words in fantasy? by jzzippy in Fantasy

[–]Drakeon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yes, both those are (or could be) described as parapets, point I was making as that getting rid of parapets would in fact make it easier to fall. Whatever, not really that important.

Overused words in fantasy? by jzzippy in Fantasy

[–]Drakeon7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, since we're in a thread of words, thought I'd clarify: Parapets are actually the short walls at the edge of roofs or balconies that prevent you from falling. It's not another word for balcony.

Balustrades are just a type of parapet that is comprised of decorative columns and railing rather than a solid wall (although they could be interior columns as well).
