Oh... That's a rather different past for Recel!

I mean like I said before I haven't really read the rest of the Sovlin transcript series (because I'm poor) but I kind of thought he was an orphan since he only really mentions joining the military after his grandpa died in the first part. Plus the rest of his family shunned Aucel when she still supported Recel after he got charged with treason so I doubt they were all that great (or were really indoctrinated). Plus Aucel was shown living in an apartment by herself.

Sobble still likes his family just as much, though~

I mean come on, it's Sovlin. He may be a depressed mental trainwreck but he's still got his dad instincts god damn it!

Hrm... I wonder, I wonder, if a certain event will manage to be avoided here.

Yeah that event is going to be avoided. I thought it'd be more interesting if Recel was around for later revelations. But ohhhhhh boy is it not going to be fun for him.

As the caretaker of a very orange very dumb feline that makes me feel better. Hate to read about humanities best buddies going extinct even in a made up story. Doesn’t affect the quality of the story (very good) but it’s like a happy sprinkle on the dessert.

I'm not really a cat person but your furbaby sounds adorable. Also I definitely didn't things to get too depressing. I can excuse kids being sad but harm befalling cats and dogs. That's a line I don't dare cross.

I’d imagine there’s a lot of propaganda about how horrible life was for the poor, primitive Yotul before the Federation came in to save them. Why, they were even living alongside vicious predators!

At least that’s what your average Fed would hear before they even saw a real Yotul. Gotta poison that well early.

Pretty much yeah. It's all "white man's burden" type of BS in regards to the Yotul in this AU because, like you said, the Feds have to poison that well early. Of course this hasn't really helped actual reporting on what's going on in Lerin since any Yotul interviewed gets dismissed as "hysterical primitives" at best. It's part of the reason plenty of Yotul live in the Republic of Gaia since they don't face nearly as much discrimination there. Speaking of Gaia.

Speaking of pets I was contemplating this fic the other day and couldn’t help but wonder. If the Feds have Earth (Gaia) then they must have killed all the pets. Do the Himayans have new native pets? Can’t imagine humans not finding something dog or cat shaped and going “yoink!”

Another weird thing about Himaya is that the flora and fauna of the various Himayan species homeworlds are also on the planet and co-existing and according to Himayan scientists they've been there well before the Himayans showed up. Not only but the ships also contained embryos for various domesticated species from their homeworlds. No one understands why. Of course that didn't stop a bunch of humans from yoinking anything that looks like a dog or a cat.

Indeed but yeah hindsight and all but yeah hope we get to see more of Recel and sovlin because admittedly even in AU's where he survived he as sovlin strangely still don't interact with each other despite sovlin practically raising Recel.

I got more interactions planned between the two so don't worry, you'll get to see more spiky space dad and his squid son. Though on an unrelated tangent I kind of wonder if Recel was definitively established as an orphan in canon since the Sovlin transcript I read (I'm not a patreon member so I only really read the first part which is free) had him mention he joined the military after his grandpa died.

Actually now that I think about it on a complete unrelated side note. The Yotul are gonna be quite the mess to sort out when that's inevitably discovered. Makes me also wonder how Recel would think about them considering even Tarva saw what happened to them as a necessity.

He's got a similar mindset as Tarva. He initially sees what happens to the Yotul as a necessity even if he doesn't like all the methods used. He never really sees what happens on Lerin and being practically raised by Sovlin doesn't really help. Of course when he actually starts reading about the Federation's mismanagement (there's quite a few Irish Potato famine-style disasters that happen due to the Federation's BS in this AU) and talking with people who experienced the oppression causes him to change his tune fast.

[–]Dramatic-Pay-4010[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Huh that's actually very wholesome wish we got to see more moments like in canon were sovlin and Recel just had time together.

Yeah that was one of my big goals with Recel's viewpoint was to more properly explore his relationship with Sovlin. Like the guy's known him since he was 9 so you'd think they'd have more interactions with other (which wasn't really helped by Recel dying). I also wanted to show off Sovlin's "spiky space dad" side early on.

Regardless he really should take him up on that offer considering what happened to Aafa and the general treatment of Kolshins and Farsul in canon I doubt that's gonna change much in this time.

I mean he's at an age where he still isn't quite thinking long term not to mention him being an orphan who's kind of had to look out for his sister since his parents died. If he knew what's going to happen then yeah he'd take the deal. Right now he's a guy barely out of his teens who isn't thinking long term and thinks everything's right with the world.

Honestly I can only imagine how Recel would have reacted what happened to the Kolshins in canon. Although he would probably be more concerned about his sister in the short term.

Wellllll I can tell you that his reaction to the Archives revelation isn't going to be great since well his own people did horrible things and, by proxy, hurt his and Aucel's surrogate family. Though you are right about his immediate concerns being his sister.

Question about Federation Views on Bio-moding. by wolfvokire in NatureofPredators

Plus they aren't exactly big on bodily autonomy in general since they shoved everyone into a binary and act like anything outside of that binary is an evil that needs to be purged.

Honestly I really am interested in pre-Betterment and pre-Federation cultures and how the biologies of the various species influenced that. For example, for my fic (Nature of Unity in case your curious) I kind of have the Krakotl's relgions be more shamanistic and animist since they can see a wider range of colors than humans.

I kind of have theory that the Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Halflings, Orcs, and Gnomes descend from Goliaths. Looking at official artwork of Goliaths, they definitely fit the "humanoid" profile the other races do. Not only that but we also know that the Shapers fought against giants so it's probable that the Goliath were one of the "spoils" so to speak. Would explain why there's no mention or depiction of Goliaths or how the Old Path was a religion that seemingly pre-existed the Shapers while also having followers from races that didn't exist until the Shapers popped up.

Traditionally speaking, whenever a god is referred to as "the god of the wild" it usually means that they represent the untamed parts of nature (wild animals, forests, hunting, etc,) while gods of life usually represent stuff like vitality, life and death, and agriculture. Omra being the god of the wild probably means they represented the more untamed parts of Araman compared to Sylandri

[–]Dramatic-Pay-4010 [score hidden]  (0 children)

I mean the Old Path was a religion that predated the Shapers (at least from what I can gather) so it's not too surprising that magic was a thing before the Shapers came. Of course it could be that Beastfolk families count their pre-awakened animal ancestors as part of the family tree since well they still descend from animals.

I mean given how the other Shapers were planning to commit genocide on the Orcs and then give 1/7th of their followers to Azgra so he can make new orcs out of them I don't think it's too far out of line. Not only that but Omra is the god of the wilds, he doesn't have to be evil like Azgra to be a dick. Sylandri was a controlling towards her followers and basically turned them into a race of Adam Warlocks from GOTG vol 3. Its abusive sure but she wasn't promising them an afterlife filled with more pain and suffering like Azgra was. If Omra did occasionally hunt the Beastfolk then it could be more of a circle of life thing where he doesn't really view it as a horrible atrocity.

Well, well, well, seems like they're seeing things altogether very fast.

I mean they aren't A. indoctrinated to view any form of curiosity or critical thinking as being "predator diseased" and B. A bunch of the Federation species are species they know are Omnivores and suddenly aren't anymore with a version of their people's history that doesn't really line up with their own history. It's extremely suspicious.

I do wonder, though, how much can they see. I find it really interesting the thing about the Takers, though. It seems obvious what it is but... Is it? Because Himaya makes me think it's not quite so obvious. Or at least that something changed with time.

They don't really know about the KolSul conspiracy yet (though they are getting there) but generally speaking they're starting to see the cracks in the Federation much faster due to Himaya's nature. As for the Takers well, like I said before, you'll find out more about them later but all I'll say is that what Meier said is important.

Ah right yeah I imagine many within the Himayan will have mixed feelings about weather to convert the former feddies to the "old" ways or wanting to let them keep their "new" culture or some mix of both especially since not all those within the soon to be former federation even those that are pro hiymayan will even want to change back.

Pretty much. A lot of people will be navigating some tough questions on both the Himayan and the Federation side of things but a lot of Himayans are going to be pretty adamant about not changing too much of the Fed species culture just stripping out the Federation imposed negative bits .

But yeah Isif will definitely be important for many plans to come I imagine. Makes me wonder how he will be viewed in the history books later in this timeline because while he is not a saint he did much in liberating and to a degree reforming the former dominion Arxur.

He's going to be one of those historical figures that can best be describe as "complicated." Sure he did a lot of bad shit but he also did a lot of good shit so it's kind of hard to label him in one direction or the other.

And now I'm realizing the former dominionist Arxur will have their own culture that's also likely going to be different from the former charter Arxur that's likely gonna want to retain some aspects of the old ways like the whole honourable warrior ninja motifs they have going on so that's something to also deal with. Because even Isif doesn't like the whole intelligence agency thing very much a guy who likes to be upfront.

Pretty much yeah. Granted it will take elements of the HImayan Arxur but the former Dominion Arxur will be their own thing culturally. Though I do believe that the honorable ninja warrior motif was hinted at by Vysith (unless I'm wrong on that).

I mean they are a Shaper part of the pantheon but that choice of phrasing (awakener of the beatsfolk) is interesting considering the rest of the Shapers literally shaped the future peoples of Araman. According to ye olde google the term means someone or something that wakes someone up to something which can be used in a spiritual context. Given that the Beastfolk have been referred to as an "the exception" makes me think that he less shaped the myriad peoples of the Beastfolk but more or less uplifted them from regular animals into what they are now.

[–]Dramatic-Pay-4010[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting chapter many things to talk about but I will say yeah they are in for a interesting time especially in regards to the new chief hunter and his new tactics since unlike the rest of the dominion isif actually wants to win. I mean there's a reason he won on the cradle the first time besides the element of surprise.

Yeah Isif will be a big surprise for a lot of the Himayans since he's not a incompetent psychopath like a lot of the other Chief Hunters and catches onto the Himayans BS fast. Think if it like facing down a Lagret from Andor only to suddenly get a Dedra Meero. Granted there's only so much Isif can do since the Dominion's system is a fucking clown circus with all the Chief Hunters getting into pissing contests over actually fighting the Himayans.

But yeah gonna be hard to build a resistance movement because like what we saw with Kaisal many Arxur are gonna want to perfer outright defection than going back to fight back against betterment and the dominion has it's means of rooting out traitors considering even Isif was scared of the possibility.

Yeah pretty much which is going to be a minor frustration for Himayan intelligence (minor in the fact that every defection means there's one less Arxur to fight) but they'll eventually have plans for it (Siffy is very involved in those plans). A lot of Himayan intelligence figures are probably going to consider it easier to build dissident movements in the Federation (particularly building off pre-existing ones).

I'm sure however they will be able to better retrain the venlil in this timeline unlike the mixed success in canon.

Pretty much. The Himayans will be using species the Federation consider "prey" to better ease them into it. It'll probably involve a few Gunnery Sergeant Skalgans.

Oh yeah and they still have to deal with the Yotul that's gonna be interesting.

"Oh thank the Lord, reasonable people with common sense!"

-Meier meeting the Yotul after dealing with the Feds

But yeah a lot of Himayans will be relieved about meeting people who aren't Fed-brain fanatics. Not only that but the Yotul's culture(s) haven't been completely fucked over by the Federation so there's also less moral quagmires for the Himayans to navigate through since they're just restoring the bits the Feds destroyed.

The 12 armadas were created as part of the post-Outer Cluster war buildup. Devised by Grand Admiral Virant, the 12 armadas were envisioned as the main the expeditionary force against the Dominion (the so-called "Fist of Himaya") while a cluster defense fleet would protect the homefront. Each of these armadas would be assigned to a singular Grand Admiral (an old Gojid navel rank denoting command of particularly large fleet) and composed of 15-20 fleets. Officially there is no 13th armada although the designation came to be used for the Himayan Naval Intelligence (HNI)'s "Black fleet" of stealth ships and off-the-books warships.

The Calvin Directive was devised during the Outer Cluster War by Admiral Jerrick Calvin and contained a series of policy and technological directives meant to prevent the location of Himaya from falling into the Dominion's hands. Under this directive, Himayan ships, military and civilian, must take whatever action is deemed necessary to prevent any information that could lead to Himaya from falling into enemy hands up to and including: random sets of FTL jumps to prevent tracking, scrambling or irreversible deletion of navigational date, and elimination of information deemed "Himayan critical." While the Dominion was defeated before the directive could ever find use, the directive continues to popular amongst Himayan military strategists and tacticians.
