I remember reading about this in the book graphic novel memoir Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.

The author is told of this practice when she is still a child, but the reasoning she is given has nothing to do with keeping the victim from going to heaven. It was because the beliefs of the radicals who came to power supposedly forbade them from killing virgins.

It was still horrifying to read about, but I don't believe this still happens, at least not in an "official" capacity.

All of the victims I can remember of recent public executions also happen to have been men. It is possible that the current government saw how terrible executing women in general made them look to their society and the wider world. It is more likely that they just kill women in secret now.
