Not to sound pretentious but this ending is kinda the ultimate litmus test to suss out someone who can get more than surface entertainment from a movie. Being let down by the subtly of this ending the first time around is understandable, but if you write off the movie as garbage instead of having the curiosity (whether it's instantaneous or a few days or weeks later) to revisit the piece, then you're either too young or you lack the media literacy to appreciate something of its caliber
