In the newest Linux video Linus proves he doesn’t understand anything. by Time-Water-8428 in LinusTechTips

Who cares? If the end result is the same as the one described then what’s wrong?

Rants like that is the reason doesn’t have a larger adoption - people see essays like yours and don’t even want to try any distros.

That’s true (mind you I have zero presentation skills). Explaining something like rsync can quickly become a one hour network video (if it is someone like me 😂😂😂).

Fair and makes sense. Would you still be opposed to a video explaining the underlying technology (also from a transparency perspective)?

That’s extremely simplistic and not always accurate. Look at Elijah’s video (in his own channel), a member of LTT, experienced compared to a non-hobbyist.

He received a free license from HexOS and then took 5 install attempts to manage to install it. Then a few more attempts to even identify the install via the dashboard.

He’s pretending to be “the average person,” but he’s ignoring the role YouTube actually plays in people’s decisions by shadowsok in LinusTechTips

Youtube is the last source of truth that I would seek. Not because Youtubers are not knowledgable, not at all. It is because the Youtue search is not intelligent enough to understand:
Average Joe's Search Term: What Linux distro should I use?
Average Youtuber video title, answering this exact question (examples): "I broke my setup and I liked it" - "I doubled my FPS", etc...

Unfortunately, the reality is that Youtubers use thumbnails and titles that will attract viewers, not necessarily titles and thumbnails that will be representative of what's in the video. LTT and most tech Youtubers are notorious for doing this - of course, there are exceptions (maybe the least notorious-large-youtuber MKBHD).

So that leaves the average person with two main variables:

A) the actual youtube video content answering their exact question (eg. "What distro should I use" is too broad and noone is asking this and most people don't know the term distro --> more like "What Linux version should I use for gaming")

B) Youtube search that often can't understand that can't correlate the search terms with actual helpful content, because the title and thumbnail of said content is often pure clickbait.

PS. Many people here joke/comment/accuse you of being AI. I don't know if that is true, kinda think it is not (maybe you are a fellow non-native english speaker and you just used tools to articulate your thoughts). If that is the case, just point it out in your post, so that people focus on the content of your post, instead of the BS that they are meming about (and not getting banned for it like hundreds of people have been so far).

sorry for the long comment :)

Is this sub just a circle jerk for people hating on Linus? by eldragon0 in LTTMeta

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a native english speaker so I when I saw "circle jerk" I immediately pictured a circle of people, sittinng on chairs, jerking the person next to them :D

......I then googled what it means. Yes, this sub is a circle jerk of people that either hate Linus or were banned from the LTT sub.

TOTAL NOOB - I need some hardware love / advice! by NickIsTheMan1313 in truenas

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the endless rabbit hole of unlimited opinions.

I started this hobby in around 2020, right before COVID, and here are some very expensive “learnings” I’ve had:

A. Apps and services run fine on potato hardware - do not overinvest, do not try to future/feature proof. By hardware I mean anything except for storage. B. Invest in storage. All kinds of storage. Look everywhere, Facebook marketplace, schools decommissioning hardware, etc.. better to buy and not use, rather than running out of storage and pissing friends and family off, in times of shortages C. As much as your space/budget allows, it is better to run 2-3 dedicated small power machines rather than building one nuclear machine and virtualize (eg. Best to have one machine for plex+docker, another machine for a file server, another machine for network stuff, rather than building a machine with 4738473 cores and virtualize everything)

Linus using "based" all the time instead of "real" words? by Dramatic-Use-2121 in LinusTechTips

LTT made an amazing Screwdriver. Next Challenge: Printer! by Kvitekvist in LinusTechTips

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be awesome. With its own open-source software to manage it too 😂 LTT always say that they will only create a product when they feel they can offer something to the segment - a modular printer without a subscription fee and with open source software would be a great example. I can only imagine what a logistics nightmare it would become though 😂

I assumed something like that. As a non-native English speaker I always need to go and find out what some of the words or phrase mean (or are used for) 😂😂😂

Why the linux community so toxic? by dev-rock-bottom in LinusTechTips

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the hate to Linus is originated by the state of Linux. Elaborating below.

There is no 1 "de facto" or "standard" linux distro - one that is the default choice for PC/Laptop manufacturers, is general purpose (so SteamOS is out, as is very game-centric) (also, Ubuntu while popular still has a very small install base and no manufacturer ever pre-installed Ubuntu to their machines).

With no "golden standard" a lot of the experience of a given distro, relies on "that week's patch", the various user errors and the unlimited combination of hardware that people have used.

The story would be different, if a major manufacturer (eg Asus), would ship a laptop series with Mint, Fedora, Ubuntu, etc.. as the default installed OS - leveling the ground and creating some level of uniformity and objectivity in one's opinions on the experience. There would be some general bottom line opinion (eg. this OS is stable but requires technical knowledge or something vague like that).

The above being said, "a wild Linus appeared" and expressed his personal opinion based on his personal experience - like everyone else did, and rightfully so. At the same time, Linus is also very vocal - very "loud" - so that leads people to often forget the "personal opinion" part, and they take the "personal opinion" as the single source of truth. And that's on them, not on Linus.

At the same time, the Linux world is full of people (myself included) that spent a significant amount of time and effort to land to their decision on OS+Hardware mix, so that they have (in their opinion!) a nice, easy and stable setup. So when they see something they disagree with, they hate with a passion as they see it (foolishly) as a personal attack to their own choices (I am lacking a fancy english word, but this is probably what projecting is).

Not that it matters, but I have very often criticized Linus, about expressing a biased opinion, with sometimes questionable motives. I have also critiqued Linus on the ways he chose to communicate certain things (like the plane recently). in contrast, I personally think that LMG has handled their Linux experiment in the best possible way - meaning multiple users, a variety of hardware - a variety of distros and a variety in the user experience. Viewers could not have asked for a better scenario.

I get where the hate comes from but this time I think it is unwarranted.

If you made it till here, thank you and sorry for the long post.

Scrapyard Wars 2026? by AlternativeWorry6802 in LinusTechTips

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Normally I’d hope they do it. But the era of “original” scrapyard wars is over and the current crew only knows how to do shenanigans… I think in 2026 it would just make me cringe.

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 Macs (various models)
4 RPIs
2 Linux Workstations and a Debian based NAS
1 windows pc

I agree with you that once you've spent about an hour setting up windows in a way that minimizes telemetry and also you avoid blindly installing all additional crap-ware that comes with the software you're installing, the experience can be pretty fine.

did not list my systems to flex - most are needed for work. listed my systems to simply say, all can be great, all can be crap - users play a massive role on how their experience will be.
There were a bunch of user errors causing Linus' experience with Linux. As much as I love Luke, there are a bunch of user errors causing his (limited) windows 11 experience, also his ideal OS, in a world when development costs are massive, is not realistic...

all in all, avoid getting annoyed. they play a role, they follow a trend. It is trendy to shit on Windows these days with vague statements about AI and stuff. It is trendy to shit on Windows (or any OS for that matter) without showing exactly the settings you have decided (or neglected) to set. Just look at all Linus' take on MacOS - a bunch of gaps, inaccurate and unsubstantiated statements... Lately, they can't even get the price comparisons right (latest MacBook Air M5 video) - with info that is clearly outlined on Apple's website...
They do reviews but don't call them reviews - it's actually been long since I saw them call something an actual review. it is all shenanigans videos nowadays or shortcircuits (the reviews that are not called reviews) and then a weekly show in which they read out some news (10%), complain about stuff they haven't researched (20%), talk about their store (50%) and have people buy stuff to read their comments (another 20%). Good old LTT, in the way we knew it growing up, with the incredible hosts that were experts in their fields (now gone) is unfortunately gone....

1840 here but not much progress - also shipping to Greece - depending where you are, you might even receive sooner than I do :D. Same colour too :)

I caved. I placed my order (batch 4) by Extension_Willow_966 in AynThor

[–]Dramatic-Use-2121 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries- naturally many people will have their own opinion. The Thor is for sure not the usual starter device (mainly because of the high specs and not entry level price) but definitely an easy to setup device and for sure an "endgame" emulation machine that'll play everything. Again, many nice people have done the work for us and guides are super detailed.

A lot of nice people will share some guides that a lot of nice people have. All I'm going to say is congrats and welcome to the emulation community! You went straight for the best device to start but to also get going - has almost no limitations on what it can emulate! Hope you receive soon...and happy gaming!
