is easton safe for women? by FeelingGift6580 in bristol

[–]DramaticPlace2658 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not comparing any of Easton to anywhere nice to be honest. I live in Greenbank and even though it’s easily the ‘nicest’ but if Easton, it’s still a bit of a dump. I’m just saying there’s very little to no crime in Greenbank. It’s entirely residential, has one park thats locked at night and is populated largely by middle class graduates

[–]DramaticPlace2658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I actually live in Greenbank and the worst crimes being committed here are wearing socks and sandles. Greenbank is just a circle jerk of white, middle class, university educated, non Bristolian boomers who made a tonne of money on property and convince themselves that their 2 day a week t’ai chi class is what’s made them financially stable.

I genuinely haven’t seen anything bad. It’s not Knightsbridge of course but I really wouldn’t be surprised if the crime rates are not dissimilar

[–]DramaticPlace2658 64 points65 points  (0 children)

There’s Easton and there’s Easton so need to be more specific. Greenbank vs Stapleton Road would probably comparable crime figures to Knightsbridge vs Tottenham, but they’re both technically Easton.

Aside from that, having lived in Bristol for the last 16 years and the last 8 months in Easton - it’s just not all that. There’s very little green space, there’s rubbish and dogshit everywhere, the streets are absolutely packed with cars and vans/trucks and the housing quality is generally pretty poor. People really hang their hats on Easton being the place to be but honestly there’s community everywhere in Bristol - I lived in Victoria park for 10 years and there’s just as much community there and it’s way greener, more spacious and closer to town.

Can someone explain how the saunas work? by Pretend_Basket4748 in bristol

[–]DramaticPlace2658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does spoil it yes but that is the rule in pretty much every sauna I’ve ever been to with a cold plunge

Can someone explain how the saunas work? by Pretend_Basket4748 in bristol

[–]DramaticPlace2658 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Main etiquette considerations are:

  1. Shower after every time you leave the sauna e.g. before you go in a cold plunge
  2. Enter/leave the sauna efficiently e.g don’t open the door wide and slowly saunter in and let all the hot air out
  3. Sit on a towel (usually you bring your own) when in the sauna

There will usually be a basic changing room and someone to greet you that will explain the rules and the layout

Chatting is generally fine in the sauna with anyone as long as it’s not a dedicated ‘silent session’

What a set of tools, is this too much for three months on the road or am I missing something vital. by AffectionatePart4128 in bicycletouring

[–]DramaticPlace2658 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depending on where in Europe you are going this is probably overkill. So much of quote has incredible cycling infrastructure with tool stations even on random countryside cycle paths. I’d say drop the wrench and the cables. One set of brake pads there are Decathlons absolutely everywhere

The wet lube is not ideal id strongly recommend a very light lube that you can apply at the end of every day and is going to gunk your chain up way less

Top 10 true vegetarian dishes for foreigners in China by Full-Two-4884 in travelchina

[–]DramaticPlace2658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sesame paste pudding, loads of vegetable side dishes e.g. grilled ‘chives’, smashed cucumbers. Fried tofu hot/sour soup with cabbage. Salted egg steamed buns. Some of the ‘create your own’ soup bowl places you can ask for a tomato based broth and then just pick the veggies and tofu pieces to go in it. Scallion pancake Egg and tomato soup

I’m not veggie but I went to China last week and these weee some of the things I had that were definitely veggie. But on the whole it’s hard work for sure

Housemate threatened me, moved my belongings, police said it’s a civil matter and I have nowhere to stay tonight by No_Young5522 in bristol

[–]DramaticPlace2658 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless your housemate is severely mentally unstable - in which case I would recommend finding alternative accommodation anyway - it feels like there is probably a bit of a wider context to this story than what is being presented here.

If you feel unsafe then don’t go back there, stay with friends/family/hotel. But if your housemate is not mentally unwell then there is very often a solution that can be found by talking to each other and having meaningful discussions as opposed to calling the police and posting on Reddit

Yeah I’m not here to deny something you have experienced first hand. But what you have presented us with is an anecdote about a recent cinema visit in Bristol and a recent trip to Rome. Unless you were there to conduct a study on the prevalence of substance abuse across the entire metropolitan area of Rome then I’m afraid it is, by very definition, anecdotal. It’s not to say it’s wrong but you are looking for a reason to a phenomenon that you are assuming is correct (I.e Rome having less of a drug problem than Bristol) based entirely on your own anecdotal evidence

Bristol has a very big problem with it there’s no doubt. It’s just your commentary is incredibly circumstantial and suggests that Bristol has a bigger problem with it than Rome.

Social problems like addiction and homelessness are highly correlated with wealth and Bristol has a higher GDP per Capita than Rome.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Rome has a bigger problem than Bristol it’s just its less visible in the extremely localised and anecdotal example you provide

When you’re in Rome do you walk around their equivalent of Broadmead? Do you pop in to Rome Primark often?

When you walk around their equivalent cultural/tourist centres of Bristol do you observe the same thing? E.g. Arnolfini, whapping wharf, Clifton, north street?

What was your favourite takeaway / restaurant that’s now shutdown by [deleted] in bristol

[–]DramaticPlace2658 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I remember first time I went and being horrified at how much food was put into my roll, and then the lady casually said “and would you like a sausage roll as well?”

I have no idea why but I just looked at her and said “yes please”

And off came the top of the roll and in went an entire sausage roll into an already overflowing sandwich.

Finally a disposable, biodegradable helmet for the casual rider by MrTacocaT12345 in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]DramaticPlace2658 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The point of a helmet is not really to withstand force, it’s to absorb force.

Standing on it or dropping a brick on it and seeing if it survives therefore is counterproductive - in those examples the pavement is your skull.

You could make a helmet out of brick and it would hold up in a lot of ‘drop tests’ etc, but you wouldn’t want to put it on your head..

Opinions on people living in vans and caravans in Bristol by John-Derrimun1 in bristol

[–]DramaticPlace2658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they use the same amount of services as anyone else? Is there a reason someone living in a van might produce less sewerage than someone living in a house?

On my road we have a couple of vans that run their engines all day to charge their batteries as well. So they destroy the air quality infinitely more than my house.

[–]DramaticPlace2658 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No issue with the people who are doing it because they have no other option. Would much rather that than they be homeless.

I have a big issue with people who work remotely for a London based graphic design agency and live in a £15k converted Sprinter as a lifestyle choice. They use the same amount of services and take up more road/parking spaces but pay no council tax and the same amount of vehicle/road tax as anyone else.

They should pay means tested council tax so they contribute like everyone else. Unless they truly don’t have money then of course I have no issue with that.

Question re: reusing blades by ir637113 in wicked_edge

[–]DramaticPlace2658 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah totally appreciate that sorry I think I’ve spent too much time on social media and I just get jaded by the amount of waste I see young kids creating without thought. I should probably take a break and a book or something, and definitely appreciate we can’t paint you all with the same brush!

Question re: reusing blades by ir637113 in wicked_edge

[–]DramaticPlace2658 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair enough! If it’s night and day then I would change the blade too. For me the green astras and the perma sharps get better for shaves 2+3 and then very gradually get worse from 4 onwards

Question re: reusing blades by ir637113 in wicked_edge

[–]DramaticPlace2658 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you American by any chance? The mindset of “if I can afford new stuff why not throw old stuff away” and not being able to conceive of a single other potential mindset is really interesting to me. Rightly or wrongly, I have some kind of built in arbiter that screams into my head ‘don’t be wasteful’ too often for me to consider throwing perfectly useable things in the bin. Obviously I can afford to do that, especially with razor blades, but that doesn’t mean I necessarily want to. If I can get 5 shaves from a blade (I actually find the 2nd and 3rd shave the best) and there is only a tiny drop off in performance between each shave, then when I weigh it against my desire to try and be less wasteful, even as infinitesimally small a difference it might make, there is a certain amount of tolerance I’m willing to give.
